Introduction

About Oracle VM Virtualbox

VirtualBox is a cross-platform virtualization application. It installs on your existing

Intel or AMD-based computers, such as Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris operating
systems and it extends the capabilities of your existing computer so that it can run
multiple operating systems at the same time. VirtualBox is deceptively simple yet also
very powerful. It can run everywhere from small embedded systems or desktop class
machines all the way up to datacenter deployments and even Cloud environments.

Useful for several scenario:

 Running multiple operating systems simultaneously

VirtualBox allows you to run more than one operating system at a time.
This way, you can run software written for one operating system on another
without having to reboot to use it.

 Easier software installations.

Software vendors can use virtual machines to ship entire software

configurations. Installing and running a mail server becomes as easy as
importing such an appliance into VirtualBox.

 Testing and disaster recovery.

Once installed, a virtual machine and its virtual hard disks can be
considered a "container" that can be arbitrarily frozen, woken up, copied, backed
up, and transported between hosts.

 Infrastructure consolidation.

Virtualization can significantly reduce hardware and electricity costs. Most

of the time, computers today only use a fraction of their potential power and run
with low average system loads.

Configuring VirtualBox

1. Click the New button (base on the Figure 1.0) at the top of the VirtualBox. The
wizard will appear and welcoming you to the New Virtual Machine and click Next.
(see Figure 1.1)
In the windows of VM Name and OS Type enter the name of the virtual machine
in the text field of Name box below. Choose the type of Operating System in the
list as well as the Version and click the Next button. (see Figure 1.2)

2. Select the amount of base memory (RAM) in megabytes to be allocated to the

virtual machine by dragging the pointer or type the desired size by clicking the
textbox beside the MB. By the default the size is 512 MB change it to 1024MB
and click Next button. (see Figure 1.3)

4. The Welcome to the virtual disk creation wizard will appear, under the File
type frame there are some option for type of disk choose the VDI (VirtualBox
Disk Image) and click Next. (see Figure 1.5)

5. In the Virtual disk storage details be sure that the Dynamically allocated is use
by the default under the Storage details and click Next. (see Figure 1.6)

address: 192.168.1.2 and Subnet mask 255.255.255.0, it means that the
machine leased a IP address form DHCP server.

*Note: If the Set Network Location window appear, choose Work network and Close.
If the AMA-CL1 did not leased an IP address from DHCP server, check the IP
address of both client and server, be sure that the Adapter 1 in both virtual
machine is Attached to: Internal Network. The server must use the static IP
addressing and the client should use the Obtain IP address.

2. Type ping amaes.com, to check the connectivity between the client-server

communication and indicates that the DNS services are working properly. (see

VirtualBox Snapshot

Save a particular state of a virtual machine for later use in Snapshot. At any later
time, you can revert to that state, even though you may have changed the VM
considerably. A snapshot of a virtual machine is similar to a machine in Saved state, but
there can be many of them, and these saved states are preserved. The snapshots is
viewable in virtual machine by first selecting a machine in the VirtualBox Manager and
then clicking on the Snapshots button at the top right. Until you take a snapshot of the
machine, the list of snapshots will be empty except for the Current state item, which
represents the "Now" point in the lifetime of the virtual machine.

Taking, restoring and deleting snapshots

There are three operations related to snapshots:

1. You can take a snapshot. This makes a copy of the machine's current state, to
which you can go back at any given time later.

 If your VM is currently running, select "Take snapshot" from the "Machine"

pull-down menu of the VM window.

AMA University 29
Global Education Services Department
Operating System Laboratory

 If your VM is currently in either the "saved" or the "powered off" state (as
displayed next to the VM in the VirtualBox main window), click on the
"Snapshots" tab on the top right of the main window, and then

o either on the small camera icon (for "Take snapshot") or

o right-click on the "Current State" item in the list and select "Take
snapshot" from the menu.

In any case, a window will pop up and ask you for a snapshot name. This
name is purely for reference purposes to help you remember the state of the
snapshot. You can also add a longer text in the "Description" field if you want.
Your new snapshot will then appear in the snapshots list. Underneath your new
snapshot, you will see an item called "Current state", signifying that the current
state of your VM is a variation based on the snapshot you took earlier. If you later
take another snapshot, you will see that they will be displayed in sequence, and
each subsequent snapshot is derived from an earlier one.

2. It can restore a snapshot by right-clicking on any snapshot you have taken in

the list of snapshots. By restoring a snapshot, you go back (or forward) in time,

AMA University 30
Global Education Services Department
Operating System Laboratory

the current state of the machine is lost, and the machine is restored to the exact
state it was in when the snapshot was taken.

3. It can also delete a snapshot, which will not affect the state of the virtual
machine, but only release the files on disk that VirtualBox used to store the
snapshot data, thus freeing disk space. To delete a snapshot, right-click on it in
the snapshots tree and select "Delete". As of VirtualBox, snapshots can be
deleted even while a machine is running.
