What is a crime?

A crime is an offence that merits community condemnation and punishment, usually by way of
fine or imprisonment. This is different from a civil wrong (a tort), which is an action against an
individual that requires compensation or restitution.

Criminal offences are normally prosecuted by the State or the Commonwealth, whereas it is
usually up to an individual to take a civil action to court. It is also possible for an individual to
begin criminal proceedings, but this is very rare.

Some matters, such as assault, can be both crimes and civil wrongs at the same time. The police
can prosecute for assault and the victim can take civil action to recover money (or some other
kind of compensation) for any injury suffered.

Causes of Crime
Overpopulation:

Increase in population is the biggest cause of crime and much of the world’s worries.
Although population increase is related to each and every cause mentioned here, it still
needs to be looked at as a cause of crime.

Poverty:

Economic deprivation or simply poverty is a major cause of crime all around the world. People
are often driven to great lengths of desperation by poverty and this is a major cause of crime all
around the world.

Racism:

Discrimination based on race is a serious issue all around the world. All humans are in a way
racist towards some people in some part of the world or another. Racism has contributed a lot
of unrest to many places all around the world and it’s mostly because of one or two idiots that
such crimes are given birth to.

TV violence:

TV violence has gone up to staggering levels and it does not help when people are influenced
and try to emulate such acts of violence. TV violence is a major cause of crime especially among
younger people that are unable to differentiate between fiction and reality.
Family conditions:

There are a lot of things that go on in families that often cause people to get into a life of crime.
Here again there are a lot of different conditions that lead a person into crime. Abuse during
formative years from family members and other such acts also instigate a person into a life of
crime.

Depression and other social and mental disorders:

Depression is also a major cause of crime. Other than depression, people with grave mental
disorders also end up committing crimes.

Drugs:

Drugs are a bane, no matter how we look at them. A person addicted to drugs is unable to
support their addiction and more often than not they end up in a life of crime to fuel their
habits. It is not unknown anywhere in the world that a drug addict ends up committing crimes
to raise money for their habits

The Solution of Crime

Is there a solution to crime? No one really knows. However, there are some regulations that
can, slowly, decrease it. In The Dominican republic the crime rate is very high. The government
in this country does not know what to do to stop crime or how to do it. As a citizen of this
country, it is my duty to help it and looking closely to my country's crime issues I came up with
some solutions that might reduce crime and even eradicate it. The government should improve
education since this is the key of success, it should improve job opportunity and availability and
the government should reinforce judicial laws, including more police strength. These
resolutions would give the government the right approach towards the end of crime.

The government should start by improving education. Education is a big step on the road to
success. More educated people means less violent people. By improving the education the
government is educating people and giving them the knowledge of good and wrong and how to
obey the law. Improving education means putting a lot of government money to build new
schools, hiring better teachers, and giving scholarships, since almost four out of ten people
don't go to college because the lack of money. The education in DR is very depressing because
the government does not provide enough funding as the schools need. Then, there are a lot of
drop-out students that are on the street committing crime. They don't have any skill and
therefore they can not get a decent job or not job at al that can provide them with enough
money to cover their basic needs. They quickly begin to rob other people or sell drugs. If people
stay in school they would have an opportunity to get off the street and find a job that wouldn't
make them commit crime.
