Health Plan

ITEM: Sunblock
HEALTH CONTENT AREAS
- Personal Health: Putting on sunblock everyday should be a habit for students to protect
themselves from harmful effects of the sun’s rays - especially since students are very
active and have activities under the sun
- Consumer Health: Learning which type of sunblock best suits them, which ingredients
could add more harm, and proper application should also be taught to students; this
involves looking at the ingredients of sunblock, researching about specific brands,
researching about harmful chemicals and following the instructions for application

OBJECTIVES
1. To encourage individuals to wear sunblock everyday
2. To enhance awareness on the need to wear sunblock

INSTRUCTIONAL FRAMEWORK
- Health Belief Model
- Perceived seriousness: People change their behavior based on perception of
threat.
- The major threats that the sun’s rays pose are skin cancer and sun
damage.
- Perceived benefits: People tend to adopt healthier behavior when they believe
the new behavior will decrease their chances of developing a disease.
- Wearing sunscreen shields from harmful UV rays, prevents premature
aging, prevents sunburns, lowers skin damage risk, and decreases the
risk of skin cancer.
- Perceived barriers: An individual’s opinions as to what will stop him or her from
adopting the new behavior.
- Some students could be too lazy to put on sunblock, only put sunblock in
the beach, think it’s an extra step to the morning routine, think it might
cause breakouts, and think that their skin is too sensitive.

STRATEGIES
1. Health Talk
a. Purpose: To show students the effects of sun damage and effects of not wearing
sunblock; To demonstrate and show different types of sunblock available in the
market today
b. Procedure:

ii. Include a question and answer portion for students
iii. Include demonstration and exhibit different types of sunblock
2. Values voting

b. Procedure:
i. Teacher will ask questions (e.g. if sunblock is important, when they
should put on sunblock, why they don’t wear sunblock and the difficulties
of wearing sunblock)
ii. Students respond through gestures

3. Habit Tracker and Morning Routine Timeline
a. Purpose: To help students in forming putting on sunblock every morning into a
habit

allow students to simulate the experience; To further reiterate the importance of
