good and timely manner entitled "The Impact of Online Games on
Adolescents".
This paper is made to fulfill the task of Indonesian subjects. With the
completion of this paper the authors would like to thank all those who have
contributed greatly to help the authors in the preparation of this paper

CHAPTER 1
PRELIMINARY

1.1 Background
In this very modern age, online gaming is no stranger to the ears of teenagers.
In recent years, many teens love to play online games. This is supported by the
number of gaming centers around the neighborhood that offer affordable
prices by teenagers.
Therefore, many teenagers who set aside his pocket money to play online
games for hours to time addicted to online games. As a result
this teenager too much to forget the more important things such as learning,
worship, even health was forgotten.
Do they know the negative effect? Are they conscious? This paper will
examine the subject of online games and their effects to the tips for not
getting addicted from online games.

1.2 Objectives
In this paper the author has several objectives:
1. Knowing the causes of teens choosing to play Online Games.
2. Know the influence on teenagers who play Online Game.
3. Knowing how to cope with online game addiction.

1.3 Problem Formulation


Based on the purpose of research paper then the authors formulate the
problem as
the following:
1. What is Online Game?
2. What factors cause teenagers addicted to Online Games?
3. What is the impact of Online Games?
4. How to get rid of Online Game Games?

DISCUSSION
2.1 Understanding Online Games
Understanding Online Games or Online Games is a game (games) are
played in a network (both LAN and Internet). Electronic and visual-based
games that utilize electronic visual media technology and online games provide
certain servers in order to be played, Online games are endless.
Online game itself can not be separated also from the development of
computer technology and computer network itself. The explosion of online
games itself is a reflection of the rapid computer network that was once small
scale (small local network) to become the Internet and continues to grow until
now .. Here are some examples of Online Games that circulate in Indonesia:

2.2 Online Game History


Online game history i (Game Online) started since 1969, when the game
for two people developed with the initial goal for education. Then in the early
1970s, a system with time-sharing capability, called Plato, was created to make
it easier for students to learn online, where multiple users can access the
computer simultaneously according to the time it takes. Two years later, Plato
IV appeared with new graphics capabilities, which were used to create games
for many players (multiplayer games).
Online games really developed after 1995, restrictions on NSFNET (National
Science Foundation Network) were abolished, making access to the full domain
of the internet. Monetary success approached companies that launched this
game, so the competition began to grow and make online games growing to
this day.
Online Games is a type of computer game that utilizes a computer network
(LAN or internet), as a medium. Usually online games are provided as
additional services from an online service provider company, or can be
accessed directly through the system provided by the company providing the
game.
According to Andrew Rollings and Ernest Adams, online games are more
appropriately referred to as a technology, than as a game genre; a mechanism
for connecting players together, compared to certain patterns in a game
(Rolling & Adams, 2006: 770)
Online games consist of many types, from simple text-based games to games
that use complex graphics and form a virtual world occupied by many players
at once.
In online games, there are two main elements, namely server and client. The
server does the game administration and connects the client, while the client is
a game user who uses the server's capabilities.
Online games can be called as part of social activities because players can
interact virtually and often create virtual communities.
TYPE ONLINE GAMES
Ø First Person Shooter (FPS)
As the title of this game takes the first person's view on the game so as if we
ourselves are in the game, most of these games take the setting of war with
military weapons (in Indonesia this type of game is often called the game
shoot).
Ø Real-Time Strategy
Is a game that the game emphasizes the greatness of the player's strategy,
players usually play not only 1 character but many characters.
Ø Cross-Platform Online
Is a game that can be played online with different hardware such as need for
speed undercover can be played online from PC or Xbox 360 (Xbox 360 is a
hardware / console game that has connectivity to the internet so it can play
online).
Ø Browser Games
It is a game that is played on a browser like Firefox, Opera, IE. Terms where a
browser can play this game is the browser already supports javascript, php, or
flash.
Ø Massive Multiplayer Online Games
is a game where players play in a large scale world (> 100 players), each player
can interact directly as does the real world.
2.3 Causes of Addiction
Many of the causes of online game addiction, one of them because gamers will
never be able to finish the game to completion. In addition, because of the
human nature that always wants to be a winner and proud of being more
adept at something including a game. In the online game if the point increases,
then the object to be played will be great, and most people are happy to
become addicts. Other traceable causes are the lack of parental oversight, and
the inevitable globalization of technology.
There are internal factors and external factors that cause adolescent addiction
to online games. Internal factors that can lead to an addiction to online games,
as follows:
The strong desire of teenagers to get high scores in online games, because
online games are designed in such a way that gamers are more curious and
increasingly want to get a higher score.
The boredom that teenagers feel when they are at home or at school.
ü Inability to set priorities for other important activities is also the cause of
addiction to online games.
Lack of self-control in adolescents, so teenagers are less likely to anticipate the
negative impacts that arise from playing online games in excess.
Are the external factors that cause the occurrence of online game play on
adolescents, as follows:
ü Less controlled environments, seeing more of his friends playing online
games.
ü Lack of good social relationships, so teenagers choose alternatives to play
games as a fun activity.
ü The expectation of parents who soar to their children to participate in
various activities such as courses or tutoring, so the primary needs of children,
such as togetherness, play with the family becomes forgotten.
Symptoms of adolescent addiction game among others:
Ø Spends more time playing games during off-school hours
Ø Sleeping in school
Ø Frequently neglecting the task
Ø Value at school sag
Ø Lying about how long time has been spent for ngegame
Ø Prefers playing games rather than playing with friends
Ø distancing themselves from their social groups (clubs or exclusive activities)
Ø Feeling anxious and irritable if not ngegame
While the physical symptoms that can befall someone who is addicted to the
game, among others:
Ø Carpal tunnel syndrome (disturbance in the wrist due to depressed nerves,
for example the fingers become stiff)
Ø Have sleep disorder (Insomia)
Ø Back pain or neck pain
Ø Headache
Ø Dry eyes
Ø lazy to eat / eat irregularly
Ø Ignoring personal hygiene (eg, lazy bathing)

2.4 Impact of Online Game


Playing online games on teens has a positive and negative impact. The
positive dampaf of playing online games is that it can activate the motor
system, with proper coordination between information received by the eye
and then forwarded to the brain for processing and ordered to the hand to
press a certain button.
Online games can encourage teenagers to be smart, as online game players
demand strong analytical skills and the right strategy planning to get the game
done properly. Excess that can be obtained by teenagers in playing online
games is to increase concentration.
Playing online games can indeed have a positive impact, but if allowed to drag
on until it leads to addiction would have a negative impact, such as teenagers
to have no priority scale in daily activities. Encourage teenagers to act asocial,
because the activity of playing online games is enough time to communicate,
both communicate with family and peers. Gain laziness to learn, caused by
fatigue caused after playing online game, so that can trigger acts of violence,
because teens imitate characters in excess, so imitate all behaviors in the show
figures in the game without considering whether it is dangerous or not. This
excessive imitation behavior can also trigger a criminal act, without adolescent

As for more details about the positive and negative impact of online games
that make teenagers addicted to online games, among others:
Positive impact.
 Eliminate fatigue
 Can give a sense of relaxation and relax the nerves from routine busyness or
tired after work.
 Train the ability to concentrate and concentrate on the players.
 To solve problems by using analysis.
 Exercise ability to organize systematic work to achieve goals.

Negative impact
 Can lower the player's health.
 Causes Laziness and criminal acts

online.
 Can improve the aggressiveness of his players, because of the influence of
violent acts he used to watch.
 May cause anti-social, due to avid games online.
 May cause emotional strain between parent and child addicted.

2.5 How to Overcome Addiction


Places of online games are now many and easy to find either in urban or
in the countryside, so its development becomes easier. The harm from the
impact of online games is very bad especially for the psychic and physical in the
teenage years.
Some tips or Solutions how to overcome addiction Game online, among
others:
 Really (Intent)
The first step in stopping the addiction should be the intention in yourself that
is to be serious or promise yourself not to play online games anymore, but
initially it must be so hard to do, but eventually it will.
 Have a Thrifty Mind
By calculating the amount of money spent to play online games in the cafe will
make someone more thought not to spend money for the sake of online
games.
 Find other activities
Seek out other positive and more beneficial activities especially preferred
habits, such as exercise, reading books or recreation. So there is no free time
to play online games.
 Limit the time to play online games
Reduce play time by beginning to determine the hours of play and play day and
work to comply with the schedule. For the first stage of the day to play 3 hours
and for the following days reduced little by little.
 Do not mix with game players
Maksut of this is not not to be friends with game players but do not be too
familiar because the invitation and influence of friends will easily affect to play
online games again.
 Ask for Help from the nearest person
Maksutnya ask the nearest person for a while be a reminder every time
going to the cafe or want to play the game. It would be nice if he was not a
gamers as well.

Online Games or Online Games is a game (games) that is played in a network

The negative impact of playing online games more than the positive impact,
among others:

· Cause Laziness and criminal acts
· Can make the players forget the time, forget to learn, forget the duties and
responsibilities.
· Can make players unproductive because time is used to play online games.
B. Suggestions
Instead of playing online games that spend money and time teenagers should
adolescents fill time with things that are positive or more useful and spend
money as needed.
