Subject: Art 9th Grade

Unit: Connecting Art History and Culture
Purpose: This formative and summative performance task assessment is designed to assess students’
comprehension of art from the renaissance to modernism in connection with the cultures that produced
them. It will also assess how their knowledge of art and design history informs their personal artwork.
It will assess the students' ability to apply organizational principles when composing and creating a
painting based on what they have read and learned in the previous unit related to art history and culture.
This assessment will have four formative components and one summative component. Students will
work on this assessment for a period of five days. The student will present their painting with an oral
presentation which will serve as part of the summative assessment for the unit. The finished painting
and the oral presentation will be included in calculating the final report card grade.

Performance Task Assessment: Proposing, Producing and Presenting: History of Art and Culture

Objective: In the past few weeks we have explored art from the renaissance through modernism from
the perspective of cultures from around the globe . Your final task will be to apply what you have
learned in the process of informing your own work. You will create a proposal for a work of art by
describing principles of art and design that you have learned. You will compose a work of art based on
your proposal, and you will create a finished product based on your proposal and composition. Your
final performance will be an oral presentation of your work reflecting and articulating the development
of your work based on your knowledge of art history and culture.

Directions: Write your name at the top of this packet. Each section contains a checklist to help you
meet the goals of each assignment.

Section 1: Create a Proposal (2 day)

Section 2: Compose preparatory sketches of your design. (3 days)

Section 3: Begin to create your painting (2 days)

Section 4: Edit, refine and finish your painting (8 days)

Section 5: Oral presentation of your finished work (Last week of class)

It is important to complete all of the five sections in order to produce a successful finished product and
informed presentation. Your finished painting and final presentation will be graded as a summative
assessment. The finished painting and presentation are each worth 25 points toward your final grade, so
make sure to do your best possible work!
Section 1: Proposal

Directions: Imagine you are an artist that has been commissioned by an art gallery to create a painting
based on a famous work around the time it was produced. What materials might you use? What subject
matter might be important to a patron at the time? What methods of creation might you employ? How
does this relate to the culture and the time period in which the work of art is produced?

Choose a famous work of art from history as a source and propose an idea for how you will create a
painting that shares similarities with that work without simply creating a reproduction. You will have
the option of working in acrylic or watercolor. Make sure you describe principles of art and design in
your proposal! You may use a laptop computer or the computer lab as well as anything from your notes
and textbook to choose a work of art and any information that may assist you in writing your proposal.
You will type your proposal out on the computer and print it with your name and class period before
turning it in. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Your proposal is due at the end of the next class period. I will read your proposal and return it the next
day with feedback and any concerns that you may need to address. Use the checklist below to check
over your work before submitting your proposal.

Checklist:

• One famous work of art was chosen as a source.

• The artist's name, year it was produced, art movement and medium are included.

• The subject matter addressed in the work of art is described e.g. Goya's “The Disasters of War”
describes the Dos de Mayo uprising.

• Principles of art and design and how you intend to employ them are described including:
balance, movement, proportion, variety and emphasis

• A medium is chosen (acrylic or watercolor).

Section 2: Preparatory sketches

Directions: Based on your proposal, compose at least three sketches that will aid you in the production
of your finished painting. The sketches must include details of where objects will be oriented in the
final composition, they must be at least six inches on one side and the dimensions should be
appropriately scaled to the final painting. Be sure to include notes in your notebook or sketchbook
regarding your process and the principles of art and design that you are taking into consideration as
well as the historical and cultural factors associated with your work. This will help you in your final
presentation. Below is a list of materials you will need as well as a checklist of requirements for the
project.
