LPG Safety & Conservation “A giant leap to the future”

27th & 28th February, 2019 - Mumbai

COURSE OBJECTIVE:-
Govt. of India’s urge to provide clean & green fuel to both industries & the household
(including lowest strata of Society), during last half a decade has resulted into unprecedented
growth of usage of LPG in the country from 14.41 MMT during 2013-14 to 21.17 MMT in 2016-
17. Similarly, there is a phenomenal growth in usage of Gaseous fuel (Compressed Natural
Gas - CNG & Liquified Petroleum Gas - LPG) in “medium & large” sized Industries, to a ain
be er quality of produc on through precision and controlle d hea ng as well as to combat
pollu ng smoke & dust coming from fuel like coal/furnace oil, Since CNG is yet to make deep
inroads to industries, the business community in general welcomed the other green fuel of
the century, i.e. Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG), due to it's easy availability coupled with
innumerable advantages over solid/liquid fuels.

Though about 90% of LPG consumed in India is used in domes c sector, it also became the
first choice among most of the commercial / industrial installa ons and in transport sector
due to dis nct inherent benefits of high thermal efficiency, easy controllability of heat, clean
burning proper es, consistent quality, li le maintenance on LPG equipment, c ompe ve cost
and self-pressurizing characteris c facilita ng smooth transfer of product within the
workplace through pipeline etc. Over the years, these characteris cs of LPG have not only
helped the industries to improve the work environment but helped them to a ain precision
heating in their manufacturing processes thus ensuring manufacture of superior quality
products having higher market values.

These brownie points of LPG have resulted in significant increase of its usage in this industrial
segment from 1.40 MMT in 2013-14 to about 2.16 MMT during 2016-17. With growing ease
of doing business, increasing environmental concern and easy availability of LPG, the
consump on of this green fuel in commercial / industrial & transport sector, (which was only
10 % of total consump on) is expected to increase in leaps & bounds in the days to come.
However, at the same me being highly inflammable and heavier than air, handling of LPG
involves more risk compared to CNG and other liquid fuels.

Most of the packed & bulk LPG users in industrial and commercial category are, tex le
industry, glass industry, pharmaceu cal units, paint industry, automobile industry, Jewellery
industry, chemical industry, ceramic industry, engineering industry, food processing industry,
metallurgy unit, electronic industry, biscuits and co nfec onary industry, bakeries, Hotels,
Hospitals, large Canteens & commercial cooking kitchens, Laundries etc. where either LPG
cylinder bank or bulk LPG storage facili es is connected to various equipment which are part
of the produc on processes in an industry.
Incidentally, many LPG such users do not possess adequate knowledge about the economical
and safe usage of LPG, thus enhancing the cost of produc on apart from making their plants
& factories more vulnerable to unsafe working situa on, consequently jeopardising the safety
of personnel and proper es.
In view of foregoing, there is an urgent need for deeper understanding and know how about
safety of LPG facili es & installa ons and 'Standard opera ng prac ces' of the same along
with relevant Doe's & Don't as well as knowledge about the techniques of economical usages
of this clean & green fuel.
