Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson addresses means of engagement, by allowing the students to be creative with the money at
home. The task is for the students to ask their parents or their guardian if they can count the amount of
money in their wallet. They are supposed to list the coins and dollars that are there and bring it to class the
next day, so they can write their own word problem. The lesson is great for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic
learners! The audio file that I posted on my blog allows the students were able to listen to my voice as I speak
about the upcoming content. I also provide the students with a transcript for those with auditory
impairments or for students who just enjoy reading.

Lesson idea implementation:

After the students have listened to my audio file for the instructions of the activity they must complete over
the weekend, they will bring to school the money they collected or a list of the amount they collected during
the flipped classroom activity. In class that following Monday the students will get out the money they
brought from home and share with their classmates what they counted. After discussing their experience
with the flipped classroom with their table groups the students come together as a whole to start creating
some of their own word problems using the amount of money they brought in. After doing a few on the
board as a whole group, the students will go back to their desks and come up with two-word problems that
contain the amount of money they counted.

The student learning will be assessed by how they wrote their word problems. This will just be a formative
assessment in order to see what they know and what areas we will be able to work on for next time. I will
include differentiation for the students when needed. If a lot of the students seem to be struggling with the

task, pair them up and have them engage in academic conversation and figure out one or two-word problems
with the money they brought in. The teacher will select a few different word problems created by the
students and with parent permission post the m on the blog for the students to look back at and the parents
to see.

Importance of technology:
This blog is very important for this project, because if it was not provided to the students, they would not be
able to complete the flipped classroom assignment at home and know to bring in their results from the
assignment to complete another assignment in school the following day. This particular assignment is not one
that could be done without this technology. The students are supposed to listen to a brief podcast for the
information and bring something from home to participate in another assignment. It also gives them an
opportunity to practice with technology at home for future assignments. The students themselves will not
NEED to use any other technologies for this assignment, although they may want to use google (or a book) to
review how much each coin and dollar is worth. The use of audacity is also very important for this
assignment, because it is what I used to introduce the new standard to the students. If this was not available
for the teacher to use, this assignment would not really reflect the UDL framework because their wouldn’t be
any multiple means of representation.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Because of this type of activity, it could raise some fears with the administration and the parents because the
internet is involved. Although, at the beginning of the year I would send home a parental consent sheet
asking if it’s okay for the students to use the internet at home and to engage in flipped classroom activities.
The blog where the flipped classroom would be help would also be password protected and only the parents,
teacher and administration would have access to anything on the blog. This will help insure the safety and
privacy of the students. I do not feel that this assignment is a high-risk for the protection of the students, they
are not communicating with others, they are just listening to the podcast that I posted and completing the
project to bring to school the next day. I will make sure to go over all of the internet safety rules with the
students a few times throughout the year, so they are always kept up to date. If the students were going to
be posting anything for this assignment or a future assignment, I would have them use their classroom
number as their name so only I know who is making the comments and they are still engaged but kept
private. These are a few ways that I will implement in order to protect student information and maintain
privacy, while still meeting educational goals.
Reflective Practice:
I believe this lesson idea can have a positive impact on student learning through having the students learn
independently and at their own rate through a flipped classroom assignment, before coming to class to learn
the full content. The flipped classroom is great as an introduction, it familiarizes the students with the
standard and what will be coming up in class. This gives them the opportunity to gain as much background
knowledge on the content as they can before coming to class and actually being taught the content. This will
especially be useful for ELL students, it will give them more of a chance to prepare for the in-class lesson. The
podcast teaches the students what they will be learning about and having them practice before the actual
lesson. Since this was just an introduction, to further extend the lesson I could have the students create their
own mini podcast creating their own word problem involving money. They can use any of the coins or dollars
that I introduced in my original podcast. I could then publish the questions that the students turn in to post
on the blog and we could discuss them in class over the next few days. Before allowing the students to do this
activity, I would work with them in groups on how to properly use the audacity website, this is essential for
the podcast process.
