Notes for Human Sexuality Parent Night

Slide 1: Opening Prayer

Welcome year 6 parents and thank you for joining me for this information night on the
Religious Education unit ‘Human Sexuality’.

Please join me in prayer. Let us pray.

Jesus, Good Shepherd, teach us through your Spirit to walk your way of light, to live your
way of truth and in all things to act with love and goodness. Help us to come to the Father
by knowing you, loving you and serving you in each other. Amen.

Slide 2: Key understandings taught in human sexuality

Over the next 5 weeks I will be introducing the topic of human sexuality in Religious
education.

The human sexuality unit was created by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) to
inform students about their bodies and how to treat their bodies as God intended, with the
carry through message that each person is unique and God created us to use our bodies to
express the love and goodness of God.

The 7 key teachings in human sexuality:

1. People grow and develop as unique individuals
• The physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and social changes that take
place as you grow
• How to express goodness through your body
• The catholic definition of sexuality and how males and females develop
differently
• How to develop healthy relationships
2. Jesus showed his followers how to express the love and goodness of God
• How people use their bodies to show love and goodness
• How Jesus modelled the perfect expression of God’s love and goodness
3. Jesus teaches people to live God’s Law
• Free will
• How the ten commandments instruct people to love God and other people
• How Jesus taught people to live God’s Law
4. The Sacraments make God present and active
• The seven sacraments; sacraments of initiation, healing and service
• What each sacrament offers
5. God is present within each baptised person
• How Baptism gives each person a permanent connection and relationship
with God.
• Why the human body deserves respect
6. The gift of sexuality is sacred
• How married people are called to express love and goodness in the world
• Why marriage is special
• Why the sacredness of the gifts of sexuality needs to be respected
7. Respect for self and others is an important Christian attitude
• How people show love and care for their own bodies
• How people show that they respect and appreciate the goodness in others
• How the sixth commandment calls people to respect others *You shall not
commit adultery*

Slide 3: What can you do at home?

Since parents are the first educators of their children, the family is the ideal place for the
education of young people in human sexuality. It is important that your child is informed
about sexual development and that human sexuality is discussed at home.

As a school, we aim to support you in the teaching of sexual development using the catholic
views and ideologies and provide a complementary role in educating your children in the
true meaning of human sexuality.

As students are confronted daily with media and other social influences that unnaturally
isolate human sexuality from the person, it is imperative this unit be taught to your children
to instill the belief that sexuality is integral to the total human person and that it reflects
God, who brought human life into being to share divine life.

If you require assistance or are unsure of how to approach your child regarding the topic of
human sexuality please feel free to contact me for appropriate literature and videos to
assist you in educating your child about human sexuality at home.

Slide 4: Parent Activity

Its time for a parent activity!
Take one page of paper provided and fold it in half.
On one side of the page write or draw ways we can treat our bodies with respect and show
God that we love our bodies. On the other side of the page write or draw ways we can treat
others with respect and show our love and goodness.

This is one task we will be completing in class. Your work will be shared with your children
when we discuss how we can treat our bodies with respect and how we can treat others
with respect and show out love and goodness.

Slide 5: Things to consider

The catholic view on human sexuality as an integral part of the whole human person. As a
primary care giver, you must make the decision whether or not you would like your child to
participate in this unit. Today your child was sent home with a form to complete and return
to me if you would NOT like your child to be a part of this unit of work.

If you would NOT like your child to participate in this unit you have 2 alternative options for
your child at school.
A) Your child may remain in the classroom and be given alternative Religious Education
tasks.
B) Your child may leave the classroom for the duration of the lesson and be given
alternative religious education tasks.
If you opt for your child to NOT participate in these lessons and would like to teach the
content personally, I will provide you will all resources and information used in class to use
at home.

The unit plan and resources will be available on our class website. You can locate these by
clicking the ‘Religious Education’ tab and then clicking on ‘Human Sexuality Plan and
Resources’.

If you require any clarification or would like further resources on any of the key
understandings in this unit of work please contact me.

Thankyou for participating in this information night, if you have any questions please do not
hesitate to ask.
