Testing And Adjusting

SMCS - 5115-011; 5115-012

Important Information

When tests and adjustments are made to the transmission or the torque
converter, the parking brake must be OFF. To prevent movement of the
machine and personal injury do the procedure that follows.

1. Lower the bulldozer and ripper to the ground.

2. Put blocks in front of and behind the tracks.

3. Let only approved personnel on the machine and keep all other personnel off the machine and in
clear view of the operator.

4. When testing must be done in a closed area and whenever possible, activate the service brakes if
the parking brake can not be used.

NOTE: All tests and adjustments must be made with the oil in the power train hydraulic system at
normal temperature of operation. Be sure the linkage adjustments are correct before tests are made.

Location Of The Pressure Taps

Many of the pressure taps for testing the power train hydraulic system have quick disconnect
couplings already installed. Do not connect or disconnect the couplings when there is pressure in the
system. This will prevent damage to the seal that is in the coupling.

either side (right or left), adjust directional cable (2). To move transmission control lever (9) to the
front or rear, adjust speed cable (1).

1. For the cable that needs to be adjusted, remove bolts (4) that hold cover (6) to the housing.

2. Loosen locknut (5) for the cable that needs to be adjusted and turn cover (6) as necessary to adjust
control lever (9) so that it does not make contact with the guide in any forward or reverse gear or in
neutral.

Linkage For Steering Clutch And Brake

Controls

To prevent possible personal injury do not make any adjustments to the

control linkage with the engine running unless necessary and then let
only approved personnel on the machine. Keep other personnel off the
machine and in clear view of the service personnel.

Procedure For Adjustment Of Steering Clutch And Brake

Linkage
1. Install rod assemblies (A) and (B) after they have been adjusted to the correct length.

2. With steering clutch levers (1) and (2) against bumpers (3), install rod assemblies (D) and (E).

3. Make adjustments to rod assemblies (D) and (E) so there is a clearance between clutch levers (1)
and (2) and bumpers (3) of ... 1.0 ± 1.0 - 0.5 mm (.04 ± .04 - .02 in)

Procedure For Adjustment Of Brake Pedal Linkage

1. Install rod assemblies (G), (H) and (I).

2. Adjust the head of bolt (5) to dimension (X) 45.0 ± 1.0 mm (1.77 ± .04 in) from the support. Bolt
(5) is the upper stop for the brake pedal.

3. With the springs disconnected from bellcrank (6), rotate it clockwise until resistance is felt.

4. Make sure the brake pedal is against the upper stop and then adjust rod assembly (G) to obtain a
free fit in the bellcrank (7).

5. Push the brake pedal down until bellcrank (6) stops.

6. With the brake pedal fully pushed down, adjust bolt (8) until the head contacts the brake pedal.

7. Release the brake pedal and turn bolt (8) an additional 1/2 turn out. Tighten the locknut.

8. Connect the springs to bellcrank (6) and the bracket assembly.

Procedure To Adjust Parking Brake Linkage

1. Install adjusted rod assemblies (C) and (F).

2. Move parking brake lever (4) down to the Brake ON position.

3. Install a 0 to 4000 kPa (0 to 600 psi) pressure gauge on the right or left brake pressure tap.

4. Start the engine and run it at high idle.

5. The pressure gauge must read 0 kPa. If the pressure is not 0 kPa, make rod assembly (F) longer and
check the pressure again.

(1) Rod assembly.

6. Move parking brake lever (4) up to the Brake OFF position. The pressure gauge must read 2750 ±
70 kPa (400 ± 10 psi). If the pressure reading is low, make rod assembly (F) shorter and check the
pressure again.

7. Stop engine and remove the test equipment.

Adjustment Procedure For Clutch Levers And Spring
Assemblies
NOTE: This adjustment should be made before any system pressures are adjusted.

1. Remove cover (3) and loosen bolts (6).

2. Move clutch lever (4) until roller (2) is in contact but not depressing plunger (1).

3. Move spring assembly (5) until the pin of the spring assembly is in the front detent of clutch lever
(4).

4. Tighten bolt (6).

5. Do Steps 2 through 4 for the other clutch lever and spring assembly.

6. Install cover (3).
