Repertoire: Longing For Winter

Materials: -Copy of “Longing for Winter”


-Music Stand
-Individual Parts for each instruments

Objective: To achieve proficiency on the piece “Longing for Winter” and make students feel comfortable
with the music.

Procedure : A SECTION
1. Look through the piece with instrumentalists and address possible problem spots. ​(2
min)
a. Flutes: address breath support ​m. 3-5
i. Memorize fingerings
b. Clarinets: ​m. 5
i. Articulation, accurate pitches
c. Trumpets ​m. 6-7
i. Articulation, accurate pitches
d. Trombones: ​m. 1-2
i. Moving slide fast enough to get accurate pitches
2. Have clarinets play the main theme slowly ​(30 sec)
a. Doing this allows for the rest of the instruments to get an idea of how the piece
will sound.
b. Main theme is passed around all instruments.
3. Run through A section slowly and address problem spots ​(2 min)

B SECTION
1. Destiny has flute solo
a. Play so students can hear theme of B section ​(30 sec)
2. Look through B section ​(30 sec)
a. Easier than A
b. Repetitive theme
c. Look ahead will help to achieve a more successful runthrough
3. Run through B section ​(1 min)
a. Look for trouble spots and work through with each section if needed
FINAL RUNTHROUGH
1. Ask if there is a certain spot students would like to run through ​(1 min)
a. Before beginning
2. Run through piece ​(3 min)
a. Pick up tempo from first runthrough if skill set allows for it

Assessment: ● While performing, observe the room


○ If students are having trouble, go over respective parts again until all students
are on the same page.
○ Don’t single out students, make everyone feel like they’re accepted and cannot
fail.
● Most students are uncomfortable with the instrument they are holding
○ Have people that are more comfortable help students who are struggling
● If a whole section is struggling, have the sections work in small groups
