Sunset Series Begins! Fuel Woes

SPRINGFIELD, Va. – In an action that
many are seeing as anti-environment, anti-
consumer and a big nod to the ethanol lobby,
the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
is moving toward permitting the sale of E15
(15% ethanol) fuels during the summer ozone
season (June 1 to September 15). Currently
available only in the colder months, E15’s
summertime ban was implemented years ago
to address concerns over its contribution to
ground level ozone (smog) on hot days.

The nation’s largest boating advocacy, services,

and safety group, Boat Owners Association of
The United States (BoatUS), wants EPA to
immediately halt any expansion of the fuel’s
availability and is asking recreational boaters
to speak up now to stop the summertime sale
of E15.

(83%) would choose E0 (ethanol-free) fuel – if
it was available.

Because of the harm it causes, E15 is prohibited

by federal law for use in recreational boat
engines and voids many marine engine
warranties.

BoatUS has long had concerns over potential

consumer misfueling with E15. Most
recreational boaters refuel their vessels at
roadside gas stations where pump-labeling
requirements are minimal. Just one small E15
orange warning label is the only protection
currently in place for marine and other off-
road engines. Without additional consumer
education to raise awareness that there may be

The Ultimate Hang-Out Boat!

W
ith the marina situated so close to the Pacific Ocean, most of the boats we see around here are ones that can handle, at
least on some level, ocean conditions. There are electric Duffy boats coming out of Marina del Rey boat rentals and a
few other exceptions to the rule but that's mostly what he have. But lately, you may have seen another kind of boat that
isn't usually in this neck of the woods, they're often in flat water habitats like lakes and bays where white caps are a rarity.
We're talking about pontoon boats. These vessels are sort of like a comfortable outdoor deck, with comfy seating and some
nice accoutrements placed on some floats that make the ride very stable and pleasant. They're popular in these flat water
environments because they are perfect for bringing a bunch of people out for a day of cruising around and chilling out in a mellow setting. Most people
who enjoy pontoon boats aren't thinking, "Let me see what this thing can do!" It's more like, "Where are the drink holders and is there a remote for that
stereo?"

Recently, Yachts 4 Fun in Marina del Rey added a couple of pontoon boats to their rental fleet and as they pass by, it's hard to deny their inviting quality.
If you're the kind of person who likes to hangs out with a bunch of friends and tool around the marina under the shade of a bimini with a cool beverage
in your hand, think about this pontoon thing. For this specific purpose, they're hard to beat. They are not burdened by the qualities (and compromises)
a normal boat must have to be ocean-going. Instead they are laid out to hang out. They're simple and user friendly for families with little kids and/or
dogs, they have lots of storage and they're super safe.

All that said, Richard Waite who owns Yachts 4 Fun said he was pleasantly surprised at how seaworthy they were. Like many people, Waite had
preconceived notions about Pontoon boats and was surprised at how able they actually are.

“A fish out of water was my first impression after first sighting pontoons in the ocean” said Waite. “Then curiosity lead me to research that showed
pontoons with triple tube designs and larger horsepower motors could handle ocean conditions.”

Waite now has two Manitou pontoon boats in the fleet - one is 25-feet with a Suzuki 350 hp, (which is ample power!) and another version that's 23-feet
with a 250 hp. They can accommodate up to 12 passengers.

"This year our plan was to add new boats to our rental fleet at Windward Yacht Center, so I looked for the best luxury pontoon boats on the market and
was impressed with Manitou’s V-Toon design that performs like any V-bottom fiberglass boats," said Waite. "I thought, if we’re going to be the first to
have pontoons in the marina it has to be done right with stable platforms and plenty of power for ocean conditions."

Special Boater's Meeting Draws Full House

W
hat has now become an annual event, the Marina del Rey Small Craft Harbor Commission once again hosted a special
night meeting targeted specifically at organizations and businesses that utilize the waterways of the MdR harbor. The yearly
meeting was spearheaded by Chairman David Lumian in an effort to bring to light the many organizations that are humming
away here in this extremely active area.

"I always think I'm well connected in the community until I come here and learn so much about what I don't know," said Santa Monica Windjammers
Yacht Club Commodore Denise George. "It's wonderful to see what everybody else is doing."

George and quite a few others made similar statements that spoke to that notion of pleasant surprise. The crowd ranged from organization leaders that
were simply introducing themselves to the rest of the community, to others who had concerns they wanted to voice on the record.

There were a number of reoccurring themes. More than one person spoke about the little vacant building that sits on Mother's Beach on Palawan Way,
wondering what will become of it. Some see it as a little jewel that can perhaps be a boathouse or serve some sort of use beyond looking quaint on the
sand. There is supposed to be an upcoming meeting that will address the future of the little house.

Of course there were many references to the fear of over development as Marina del Rey undergoes a full scale refit. Whether directly or as an element
of another point, the theme and reminder that this area was built for the main purpose of recreational boating was reiterated.

No grand decisions were made during this gathering but this was not the purpose of the meeting. It was a mostly friendly collection of men and women
who use and cherish what Marina del Rey has to offer. While some might have been frustrated or fearful or anxious about their respective futures, the
common denominator was they were all impassioned about what they had going.

Certainly the take away from this special night meeting is that the Marina del Rey boating community is alive and well. There are kids programs galore,
outrigger groups, fishing clubs, yacht clubs, sailing enthusiasts, rowing organizations, sailing schools, ecological groups and all kinds of folks who are
getting out on the water and using this location as it was meant to be used. It was a reminder that this place is not just a parking lot for luxurious boats
or a backdrop for an Apartment tenant's view - it's a churning energetic community of people who love the water for all the positivity it can bring.

Sundown Series
A Race for the Rest of Us

T
here’s so much racing available for Marina del Rey racers and the great thing is there is an event for nearly any of the various skill
levels and desires that exist. For instance - for those that like to stretch their legs and log some open ocean miles, the Berger/Stein has
you covered. Race three up to Point Dume is coming and the Catalina Layover (races 4 and 5) is after that. In races like those, the
crew can settle in to a long tack and take in the Southern California sights.

If getting in a quick competitive sail once around the track on a weekday suits your fancy the enormously popular Sunset race on Wednesday nights is
where to be. The Tuesday night Barbeque races hosted by the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club has also grown into a legit weeknight event. For
the one-design breed Cal Race week is a high level regatta that brings out some serious talent who take the sport seriously. You get the picture – there’s
something for everyone. But there is another race that has been humming along for years that is a true favorite for those who partake. The Sundown
Series, held on the third Friday of every month through the summer (starting in May) is a great informal, inside and outside the breakwall, series that
is said to be just the right balance of fun and competitive. It used to be mostly dinghies but over the years it’s been opened up to cruising boats and it’s
proven to be a great event to enter into the universe of sailboat racing or get some quality practicing in for other racing pursuits.

There is no yacht club membership required and the post-race barbeque is always a good time – so start the weekend off sailing with this somewhat
below the radar sleeper event.

Single Mariners of Marina del Rey

Attention sailors, singles and married couples.
Single Mariners of Marina del Rey invites you
for a dinner and a day sail. Join us on the first
and third Thursdays of each month at 7ish for a
meet and greet social hour followed by dinner
and a meeting. The goal of the club is to meet

want to learn about ocean-going sailing. If
you are a skipper and would like to host our
members or have an interest in teaching sailing
then this is the club for you. The meetings are
held inside Pacific Mariners Yacht Club. There
is a $7.00 charge for dinner or to attend. PMYC
is located at 13915 Panay Way, Marina Del Rey,
there is plenty of free parking at the club. For
