5. Develop a conceptual design for a robot attendant at a gas station. The driver should
be able to get the robot to fill the tank without getting out of the car. In particular,
• describe how the complete system would function;
• the component technologies that would be required; and
• the possible benefits of such a system.
Do you think such a system would be profitable?
6. A pump supplies water to a large reservoir. The pumps actuated by switch S. The water
level is sensed by two pressure switches A and B, set to 2 and 3 m, respectively (i.e.
A=1 if the level exceeds 2m, and B=1 if it exceeds 3m). Two ON-OFF valves C and D
control the amount of water withdrawn from the tank, with C being the larger of the
two. Each valve has a limit switch mounted on its stem, which transmits a signal when
the valve is open.

To prevent the water level from dropping too low, the pump is to be actuated if any of
the following should occur:
1. Water level has dropped below 2m.
2. Water level is between 2 and 3 m, and valve C is open.
3. Water level is above 3m, but both valves are open.

The function S for actuating the pump is to be derived.

Metal parts are to be dipped in a degreasing solution for a given time before painting.
The pneumatic cylinder used in this process is shown in Fig. 1.

Name the type of cylinder shown in Fig. 1.

The cylinder is required to raise a maximum load of 300N. Calculate the cross sectional
area of the piston required. Supply pressure = 0.6 N/mm2. Cross sectional area of the
piston rod = 100mm2
