Social Studies PBL- Kwanzaa
By: Casey Fager
My lesson is about the Kwanzaa holiday. Students are put into groups and
are in charge of researching the holiday using the website, Epic!, Watch
Know Learn, and another informational website presented to them. They
will then have the opportunity to create their own Kwanzaa celebration for
the class to demonstrate their learning. Students can make use of poster
making technology such as Pages, Prezi, or Glogster when asked to
represent the Kwanzaa principles or dancing and storytelling aspects of the
celebration.

READING PBL- CHRISTMAS
By: AMY REINERT
My lesson focuses on students learning about how other countries
celebrate Christmas. The teacher will ask the question, “How do other
countries celebrate Christmas?” and challenge students to research and
read informational text on different countries and their Christmas
traditions and customs. Students will work collaboratively with a partner
to create a Power Point slideshow which depicts at least three different
countries and their Christmas traditions and celebrations.

ART PBL LESSON- CHINESE NEW YEAR
BY: KIRSTY COMER
Chinese New Year has been celebrated for thousands of years! The holiday focuses on home and family.
Chinese New Year celebrates the beginning of a new lunar year. Traditional activities include exchanging
monetary gifts, festive parades with Chinese Dancing Dragons, firework displays, and cleaning the house.
Each new year is marked by one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals: horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, boar, rat,
ox, tiger, hare, dragon, and snake. The Festival of Lanterns, which occurs on the last day of Chinese New Year
celebrations, features paper lanterns created in the form of the animal of the year. In this lesson, students will
have the opportunity to dive into this fascinating culture and tradition and create an inspired piece of
artwork! Students will explore the animals that are symbolic of the Chinese Lunar Zodiac Calendar, then use
what they have learned to create a digital coloring page of that animal accompanied by a think, pair, share
discussion with their partner.
