Introduction

From impatience to anger and agony, an emotional distress and damage to the

psychological balance of oneself. This is only one of the many effects of traffic congestion.

Traffic congestion, in a nutshell, is a phenomena described as the overuse of the

transit system reasonably identified by the vehicular overflow, sedate transportation pace,

and prolonged trips. It stems from the widespread desires of people to pursue certain

goals that inevitably overloads the roads (Downs, 2004). This problem's obnoxiousness

has always been a public challenge. Because of this, some people tend to just ignore the

issue and be contented about the situation, since they believed they can do nothing about

it. To some, on the other hand, it's a gamble of financial loss.

Congestion damages public welfare. Knowing this, the government deliberately

apprehends the situation. There's currently no appropriate and definite measure that can

fully counteract the problem. Instead, laws and regulations are implemented in order to

lessen the eventualities that can further increase the impact of the congestion. Some

places even strictly limit vehicle count. But despite all of the application of different

remedies to address the problem, it keeps on getting worse.

Traffic congestion can happen in different ways. There are number of specific

circumstances which cause or aggravate congestion, one greatly reducing the coping

capacity of the public road or sometimes, simply overcrowding.

The researchers aim to develop a systematic and comprehensive approach on the

said issue. Moreover, the researchers will also identify, evaluate and describe the major

factors that causes traffic congestion in General Santos City.


This research aims to collect and evaluate the different perception of the

citizens of General Santos city on the state of the traffic congestions in the streets and

know their rationale. this will be a step to truly know the opinions of the public especially

citizens that are on the road everyday with no voice to speak out. Therefore, the study

specifically answers the following questions:

1. What are the factors affecting traffic congestion in the streets of General Santos

City?

2. Among these factors, which is the most common and problematic?

3. Is the General Santos City government doing its best to reduce traffic congestion?

4. What are the possible solutions of solving the traffic congestions in General Santos

City?
METHODOLOGY

The researchers will use a qualitative and surveyed style method in order to

explore the perception of General Santos City’s citizens regarding about the factors that

possibly affect the traffic congestion in General Santos. The researchers will select 10

traffic-prone roads to be randomly picked in a random sampling method, a sampling

method wherein the selection of a subset of a population where each element has an

equal chance of being selected.

The roads that will be selected from are Honorio Ariola Street, Makar-Siguel Road,

Labangal Road, National Highway, Pan-Philippine Highway, Pedro Acharon Boulevard,

Santiago Boulevard, J.Catolico Avenue, Pioneer Avenue and Pendatun Avenue.

Researchers chose these settings based upon their own experience as settlers of

General Santos City. From these 10 educated suggestions only five settings will be

chosen to be the official settings of the conduction. The five settings will be chosen by

using a simple random sampling method. This method will give each settings an equal

chance of being chosen. The researchers will evaluate only in 5 randomly selected roads.

Once the researchers have obtained 5 randomly selected streets to evaluate, the

researchers will now select the respondents through convenience sampling, in which

respondents who are close at hand or close to the setting will be included in the research.

The data needed for the completion of this research will come from the

pedestrians, drivers, traffic enforcers (people around the locale - specifically the road)

through questionnaires given to them. A questionnaire is a more appropriate way of


gathering data because it consumes less time and cost cheaper. These reasons reside

with the study since it has a wide scope of respondents. The number of respondents will

not vary in this sampling procedure but the number of respondents who are included will

be stated in the results and discussion. In getting the information needed, the researchers

will have sought the permission in the authority first before the questionnaire for making

surveys will be given directly to the respondents.

The questionnaire will include a set of question that are related to the study and

are ensured to give the best result. In making these questions, the researcher will make

sure that the respondents can answer it easily and truthfully. The questions will not violate

the privacy of the respondents and it will only have answers which are possible. The

questionnaire will be composed of three sections. In the first section, the questionnaire

will give possible reasons of traffic congestion in which the respondent can check. The

second section will support the respondent’s answer in section one by asking the

respondent’s opinion on its severity as a factor. This section can be answered in a scale

of 1 to 10 with 10 as the highest degree of severity. The third section will ask the

respondent to give his honest opinion about what time does traffic usually occur in the

area. This section will help the researchers to point out the possible time spots that will

tell whether this factors of traffic affects different areas in the same time.

After the needed data will be gathered, it will be analyzed statistically through the

use of appropriate statistical tools. To interpret the data, the researchers will use

Frequency and Percentage. This will be used in order to abstract the data from the

respondents answer through the questionnaires.
