Body/Methodology:

● Before Studying
o Take notes: One of the best ways to prepare for a test is to start preparing
early. Take notes during class to help you better remember the information,
and have something to look back on.
o Read Actively: It is not just enough to skim the information that you are
reading. In order to fully understand it you must read for comprehension.
o Create a study plan: To avoid cramming last minute for the test, create a
plan. Set aside a few times to focus on studying, and plan what you want to
study.
o Set rewards for yourself: Find ways to motivate yourself to study. A common
trick for this is to say that once you study for a certain amount of time you
than get to do something you enjoy.
● Beginning Steps of Studying
o Study in small intervals: It is important to give yourself breaks when studying.
This helps prevent your brain from being overwhelmed. Breaks do not have
to be long, just allow yourself a few minutes to relax between concepts.
o Unplug: It is important to limit the amount of distractions that occur when you
are studying. It is helpful to take a break from technology.
o Cue Cards: Identifying key terms is important. Create cue cards with different
terms and then on the reverse side of the card write the definition or
important points pertaining to the concept.
● Tips for Advanced Studying
o Make Connections: It is not enough to just know concepts. It is important for
you to be able to connect concepts together. This can be done using a variety
of different graphic organizers. By being able to connect concepts to each
other, and to personal experiences, you will have a greater understanding of
the big picture.
o K.I.M. Strategy: Key Points, Information, Memory Clue. Pick out key concepts
from the course. Find information about those concept. Create a small
memory clue (image) to help you remember the information.
o Practice essay questions: If your teacher gives you the essay questions
beforehand, take advantage of this. Take time to practice writing out answers
to the questions. This will help you remember the information as well as help
you organize your thoughts.

Closure:
● Have students reflect on skills they have learned.
● Summarize:
o Pre-studying (things you do to prepare)
o During studying (things you do to pick out key points)
o Advanced studying (things you do with key information)

Assessment:
● Ask students if they can think of ways to implement these skills in their everyday
lives.
● Also have students suggest other skills that haven’t been mentioned
