Let’s Go on a

Virtual Road Trip

to the West!
• Today, we will be using different types of
technology to explore the Western Region
of the United States on a virtual road trip.
• But first we need to talk about some of the
safety tips and rules to make sure
everyone will get the most out of the
experience while keeping everyone safe.
• There will be 3 stations that you will be rotating
through.
1. Virtual Reality Goggles with iPods
2. Chromebook Activities
3. iPad QR Code scanning station
• Do not worry you will have the chance to participate in
all three stations at least once! But when the time is up,
you must move on right away to the next station so
others can have a turn to experience it too!
• Be careful with the technology and stay in one spot so
that you do not accidentally drop or break something.
But if something accidentally happens be sure to tell
the teacher right away!
• If you have a problem with the technology, raise your
hand for the teacher to come and assist you.
• Be sure to stay at your station and on task with
your device only.
• Be courteous and mindful of the space you are
using and those around you.
• Be sure to read the directions at each station
before beginning.
• Be adventurous and try to see as many things as
you can with the time you have at the station.
• BUT, stick to exploring the areas and topics that
the teacher set up ahead of time.

***If you do not follow this direction, you will not be

allowed to participate for the rest of the lesson.
This is meant to keep you safe.***
Safety Tips for using Virtual Reality Goggles:
• Be careful when taking iPod in/out of Goggles.
• Adjust the headset for comfort and so it does
not fall off of your head!
• Try to stay in one spot while participating in a
virtual reality experience.
• Sitting down on the floor not near anyone
else or anything else is best so you do not
bump into to someone/thing and get hurt.
• If you start to get dizzy, lightheaded or
anything that makes you not feel good, STOP
immediately and take a break with the goggles
off then tell the teacher.
How to use VR Goggles:
*Pick out what app or video you want to experience from
the teacher set-up list.
*Follow instructions for specific app to stream it through
the VR Goggles headset.
*Insert iPod into top of headset securely with the screen
facing you.
*Use dials towards the top and bottom to adjust how you
see the video and to make the picture clear. Push them
together or apart to see one clear image from the
screen. Adjust volume as necessary.
*When video is done, carefully take out iPod and select
your next experience! Try as many as you can, have fun!
*If you wear glasses, be sure to take them off before putting on the goggles
and put them in a safe place off the floor so they are not accidentally broken!
Chromebook Station
• In this station, you will be using the
chromebooks to explore the West using
Google Earth and if you wish you can check
out the cool webcams that the National Park
Service has available.
• Please stick to exploring in the Western
Region of the United States and do not
spend too much time in one area or another.
• Have FUN and explore as much as you can!

iPad QR Code Scanning Activity
For this activity you will need:
• a pencil
• QR questions worksheet
• iPad
• QR Code papers to scan
*In this station, you will be exploring different places
in the West by scanning a QR code on an iPad and then
answering questions about the places you have visited
on the worksheet.
*I will be collecting the worksheet when we are done
with this lesson. Try to get it completed but if you do
not have enough time to get through all of the 14 cards
the first time we rotate through you can get it finished
the next time.
QR Code Step by Step Directions:
1. Get out materials needed.
2. Pick 1 of the 14 cards to start out with. (Everyone will
get through all 14 cards in the end so it does not matter
what number you start on.)
3. Read what is written on the card.
4. Scan QR code (or codes) on the card with the iPad using
the “QR Scanner” app.
5. Explore the area that the QR code takes you to and
HAVE FUN!
6. Answer necessary question about your card on the
worksheet.
7. Put card back for someone else to use and get another
card.
8. Do the same thing until you have explored all 14 places
found on the cards.
9. Put iPad/Cards back when it is time to rotate or clean up!
