ENGLISH FINAL ESSAY

Should religion be taught as a school subject in school?

Religion has been transmitted by different ways. One of them, is by means of the schools, but
do people agree with the teaching of religion in schools? Through the years, religion has been a
topic of discussion. There are exist a lot of religions and it is because everyone has their own
culture, races, costumes, and traditions. But, there are problems when parents have to select a
school to their children. The schools should teach religion, but they should not teach to preach.

The knowledge of religion does not necessarily make you a better person. It has been believed
that religion is related with good values, attitudes, and actions. This is one of the reasons why is
teaching, but one thing is to teach religion and other promote prayer. Wertheimer (2018) says
“Schools cannot promote prayer, because they are institutions for educating, not preaching.”
(para. 17). According to that, the schools can promote the values by means of ethic.

In some cases, the choice of education in schools is limited because academic part is linked to
religious education. In Barranquilla, there are many options to choose when you have to decide
where you going to leave your children, but these are reduced when you not practice
Christianism. Godfrey (2013) states that “The teachers cannot force a student to think a certain
way or believe in a certain religion, but the student must think for himself and decide what to
believe and what not to believe.” (para. 2). So, it means a problem for the personal identity of the
children.

On the other hand, there are no doubt that religion does not seek to show bad values to
children. Teaching religion also has good aspects. One of them, is the improvement of morality.
Currently, it is common to see problems of drug addiction, school bullying and unwanted
pregnancies. Religion has been demonstrated changes in the vision of some students in such a
way that it is possible to avoid all these situations. Jackson (2014) states that “If students are to
function as globally competent citizens, they need to understand religion's profound impact on
history, politics, society, and culture.” (para. 7). In this way, it is possible to see religion as a
good alternative to promote values and good citizens in a society.
To conclude, the difference between teaching and preaching religion must be clear. In that
difference is where the problem lies. Religion is a good way to educate children in schools.
However, if what it seeks is to preach religion it can cause some confusion with the ideals and the
culture that comes from home. This situation is a limiting factor when choosing schools. Religion
is important for culture and values, but preaching it is a task for each person.
