Title: The Effect of Temperature and Ionic Strength on Dissolved Oxygen Concentration

Abstract: this lab aimed to determine the solubility of oxygen in water at varying temperatures
and ionic strengths and to also evaluate the relationship between temperature, ionic strength and
dissolved oxygen. The experiment was done using different samples of water with varying
properties such as varying ionic concentrations and varying temperatures to test the theory of the
relationship between each component in the aim. After collecting results it was observed that
there was indeed a relationship between ionic strength and temperature in dissolved oxygen
levels. The results were directly related to the theoretical conclusions and thus meant that the lab
was successful and the theory was indeed precise.

Aim: this lab aims to determine the solubility of oxygen in water at varying temperatures and
ionic strengths and to also evaluate the relationship between temperature, ionic strength and
dissolved oxygen.

Apparatus: Hotplate, Thermometer, oxygen meter, air pump, bubbler, deionized water, ionic
solutions

Method: This experiment consisted of three parts; part A, B and C.

 Part A aimed to test for the determination of saturated dissolved oxygen concentrations
at 25oC, 35oC and finally 45oC. To perform this, 250ml of deionized water was added to
a 600ml beaker and placed on a cool hotplate. Using the air pump provided, a bubbler
was placed in the beaker that contained the water and was left for 10 minutes following
which the DO levels were taken. The hotplate was then adjusted to increase the
temperature of the water to 35oC, leaving the bubbler in the water. After the water
reached a temperature, the DO level was then recorded. The hotplate was then set to
increase the temperature of the water to 45oC and the steps were repeated.
 Part B aimed to test for DO levels at cooler temperatures. To perform this part of the lab,
250ml of water was added to a 600ml beaker. The using the air pump provided the
bubbler was placed into the water. Ice was added until a temperature of 15oC was
attained. The DO was recorded and the process was repeated for an attainted temperature
of 0oC.
 Finally, Part C was aimed to test for the determination of saturated dissolved oxygen
concentrations for solutions of different ionic strengths. This was done by adding various
samples of ionic solutions to a 600ml beaker and part A step 3 was repeated and Part C,
Steps 1 and 2 for each of the remaining sodium chloride solutions.
