ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

T his course is the continuation of some wonderful work started by a group of peo-
ple called The Living Light Project which I was privileged to have been a part of
for some years.

Much of the material in this manual was taken from The Living Light Project’s Reiki
Mastery manual and as you read through it you will be able to hear in many of its
parts the inspiring voices of the other three former members, Claire Parlane, Steven
Bird and Louis Daniel Heap.

YOUR GOALS FOR THE 4 DAYS
What would you like to get from the Reiki Master course?

WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO HEAL

Issues, problems and conditions (both physical and non-physical) in your life that
need healing. Make sure that each issue is accompanied by a feeling/sensation in
your body. If there are many issues, choose three that when solved would make
the biggest positive difference in your life. Choose issues which you are comfort-
able to share with the group.

4
WELCOME

C ongratulations for having taken a big step on an exciting journey of personal and
spiritual development!
The objectives of this course are to provide you with knowledge (both theoretical
and practical) that will enable you to become masterful Reiki practitioners and teach-
ers. By choosing to attend this training you chose an important step on a wonderful
and enriching path towards mastering Reiki and yourself.

WHAT IS A REIKI MASTER?

How can the Master level be attained in just four days of training? True mastery is
a lifetime’s work and it is the lifetime of work that matters, not the achievement of a
title. A Reiki Master has not necessarily mastered Reiki, for how can one master the
infinite! “Reiki Master” first and foremost is a title that recognises you to have
advanced practitioner skills and to be in a position to teach Reiki. It also says about
you that you are committed to bringing more light, love and healing into the world.

THE LEARNINGS

Over the course of these four days you will learn many things. Firstly and perhaps
most importantly, you will learn how to attune other people to Reiki. There is a pre-
cise process to learn and practice, along with the Reiki Master symbols required to
give an attunement. You will be initiated into four new symbols, which will signifi-
cantly increase your level of personal energy and enrich your ability to work with
Reiki. This initiation is really all you need to attain the level of Reiki Master.

However, there are many other powerful resources for you to have as a Reiki
Master. You will learn ways to clear the energy of spaces and the use of a Reiki
Energy Grid to maintain a powerful level of energy in your personal and work envi-
ronments.
A process commonly known as “Reiki Psychic Surgery” and other advanced tech-
niques for healing with Reiki will become valuable tools in your repertoire. We will
explore ways to consciously connect with Reiki Guides and other forms of Higher
Energy to guide and support us in our work (and play).
You are going to learn ways to run your own Reiki courses, which will be an oppor-
tunity for me to pass on my experience of many years of teaching to you. We will
take a deep look into the nature of dis-ease and the elements of holistic healing and
much more...

REIKI - A SPIRITUAL PATH
GOKAI - THE FIVE REIKI PRINCIPLES FOR HAPPINESS AND SPIRITUAL HEALING

Kyo dake wa - Just for today

Ikaru na - Do not be angry
Shin pai suna - Do not worry
Kan sha shi te - Be grateful
Gyo-o hage me - Take responsibility and fully do what you’re here to do
Hito ni shin setsu ni - Be kind to others

BELOW IS THE MOST POPULAR VERSION OF THE REIKI PRINCIPLES USED IN THE WEST

Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings.

Just for today I will let go of worry.
Just for today I will let go of anger.
Just for today I will do my work honestly.
Just for today I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.

R eiki is more than just another healing technique, much more. The practice of
Reiki can unfold into a spiritual path of great depth and beauty. Being a channel
for the energy essence of Divine Love is not a state that one would enter for the
length of a treatment and then go back to “normal”. Being a channel for Reiki affects
every moment of our lives, every perception, every choice and every action. As the
practice of Reiki unfolds into a spiritual path, we flow Reiki not just from our hands
but also from our hearts, our actions, thoughts and feelings.

The Reiki Principles provide a valuable guidance for attuning everyday life to the
Universal Life Force Energy.

Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings.

The attitude of gratitude and the focus on the positive in our lives are the keys to
experiencing abundance. Abundance is much more than just the availability of lots
of things and money. It is a natural state of trust and joy. It is the realisation that all
is being provided for since all is an expression of Divine Love.
When we feel thankful for what we are, have and do, we will magnetically attract
abundance of every kind into our lives.

Just for today I will let go of worry.

To worry is to invest some of one’s mental-emotional energy into possible results

that one does not want. Worrying about the past is futile since the past is gone.
Worrying about the future is unhelpful because it channels one’s energy into the cre-
ation of unwanted results. Letting go of worry begins with remembering that there is
a divine or universal purpose in everything. Accept the choices you have made in
the past and preserve the learnings. Reclaim your energy by releasing the feeling
that things could have or should have been otherwise. When thinking about the
future, invest your power of expectation into thinking of possible positive results.
6
Just for today I will let go of anger.

Anger often springs from feeling out of control or out of synchronisation with our
environment, our life purpose, our Spirit. Letting go of anger is not suppressing it.
Feel the feeling and as soon as possible, get the message, take action and let the
emotion go. Unreleased anger drains people’s energy badly and makes it less easy
for their bodies to maintain good health.
Anger is fuelled by the illusion that we wouldn’t create what we experience in life.
The causes for the experience are projected onto the outside and thereby one gives
one’s power away to mere triggers and mirrors. Letting go of anger begins with wel-
coming it as a reminder to reclaim one’s power and take responsability for one’s
experiences.

Just for today I will do my work honestly.

“Work” in this context means more than just work. It refers to what we practise and
cultivate, our path, including our thinking and feeling. The meaning of “doing my work
honestly” expands to being honest with myself and everyone else in my life. It
means that I “walk my talk” and that I’m willing to learn what I need to learn.
True harmony can only unfold in a climate of honesty. Denial and lies create con-
flicts which consume tremendous amounts of peoples’ life energy. Honesty with one-
self means to listen to one’s Spirit and to be true to it even when it tells us things we
don’t want to hear because we fantasise unpleasant consequences.
Honesty is the basis for any mastery. Two contemporary masters describe spiri-
tual mastery as “a level of consciousness that knows no conflict with the Divine”
(Sogyal Rinpoche), “but is aligned with the Divine so that one’s own choices are
Divine choices.” (Caroline Myss). Honesty is the presupposition for consciousness
to be able to evolve. Imagine that every thought of yours was a suggestion to your
unconscious mind and a prayer to Spirit - what would you be thinking?

Just for today I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.

This Reiki Principle can be understood as a variation of the Sacred Truth that “all is
one”. The interconnectedness of all that exists (and even all that doesn’t exist) is a
scientific fact today. All of our thoughts, feelings and actions affect everything else.
When we show love and respect for the world around us then we create a world of
love and respect that much more.

Just for today...

Each Reiki Principle begins with these three words. “For the rest of my life I will...”
could be an overwhelming commitment. “Just for today...” reminds us that all com-
mitments are to be renewed daily, that every new day, in fact every new moment pre-
sents us with choice. The idea is not to wake up to a “higher reality” only to fall
asleep again in “higher habits”.
“Just for today...” is a call to live in the present and that means to make one’s
choices in the present.

7
THE LINEAGE

W ith the greater availability and affordability of Reiki training nowadays, practi-
tioners often choose to study with several masters over time, adding variety
and complexity to their practice and their lineage. To this day, the number of different
Reiki schools and styles is large and keeps growing, making it easier for the individ-
ual to be naturally attracted to what suits them best at the time. The choice might be
a little confusing at first, but the ability of a system to accommodate new ideas and to
account for individual needs seems more important to me than the call for control.

To my current knowledge, all true styles and schools of Reiki have their lineages
start with Mikao Usui. The significance of a lineage is by far more than just the infor-
mation about the parts of the genealogical tree. A lineage is a transpersonal pool of
power that we can call upon for help and tap into whenever we decide to.
The deeper meaning of lineage transcends time and space. It is a profound ener-
getic connection not just to the people in one’s own “family tree” but to all teachers
and practitioners of all Reiki lineages, past, present and future. Once you’re attuned,
all that’s required to consciously tap into this pool of power is to call upon it, in your
own words, e.g. “I call upon and thank the spirits of Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi and
Hawayo Takata for guidance and assistance in flowing Reiki to (...) today for his/her
highest good.”

This is your lineage, drawn from teacher to teacher in succession:

Mikao Usui > Chujiro Hayashi > Hawayo Takata > Phyllis Lei Furumoto >
Carell Ann Farmer > Leah Smith > William Lee Rand > Elizabeth Gilberg >
William S. Tupkal > Lynne Blanchard > Lindy Barron > Jollean Matsen >
Stephanie Rink > Michael Kaufmann > YOU

The specific Reiki Master initiation and the choice of techniques and symbols pre-
sented in this training are commonly associated with the “Usui/Tibetan Reiki” style.
This style of Reiki is a combination of Hawayo Takata’s “Usui Shiki Ryôhô” with tech-
niques and modifications introduced by William Lee Rand.
Please refer to “The Reiki Sourcebook” (see page 63) for a well researched
overview of Reiki styles and lineages.

In my Reiki 1 manual I said in ‘Guidelines for a Reiki healing session’: “Take a few
moments to prepare yourself mentally. You might like to say a prayer and call upon
the assistance of Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata and other high
level guides to help making this treatment a success for the receiver’s highest
good.”

The expression ‘other high level guides’ refers to the many personifications of the
infinite resources of Consciousness (Rei). These personifications help us to identify
with the qualities or resources they represent, qualities such as wisdom, infinite
knowledge and power, Love and Light, forgiveness, courage and much more. They
remind us of the fact that we have these qualities and that we can express them if we
choose.

8
In her book “Essential Reiki”, Diane Stein refers to what she calls the Reiki guides
as spiritual beings who are there to help every time a Reiki healing or an attunement
takes place. They even energetically complete the Reiki symbols if any parts were
missed out (but Diane Stein stressed that they would not make up for sloppiness)
and they connect every variation of a symbol with the Source (Rei) to restore its orig-
inal power.

The following is an enjoyable visual meditation for connecting with any embodi-
ment of any quality. I adapted it from Sogyal Rinpoche’s book “The Tibetan Book of
Living and Dying”.

PHOWA - THE TRANSFERENCE OF CONSCIOUSNESS (OR QUALITIES)

(SOGYAL RINPOCHE, PAGE 216)

1. Sit quietly and comfortably. Invoke the presence of the embodiment (guide, angel,
master etc.) in the air in front of you, in the form of radiant light. Choose whichever
divine being you feel close to and fill your heart with their presence.

2. Imagine your consciousness as a sphere of light at your heart, which flashes out
from you like a shooting star and flies into the heart of the presence in front of you,
merging with it.

3. Remain in that state of oneness with the presence for as long as possible.

4. Dissolve into light and completely return into your body, filling your body with the
light that has absorbed the qualities of the embodiment.

5. Reorientate and ground yourself (e.g. massage your feet, walk about).

THE REIKI MASTER SYMBOLS

D uring the Reiki Level Two course we learn to use three Reiki symbols in various
ways. We experience how the symbols help us to connect with deeper qualities
of Reiki as we draw them during treatments and distance healing.
Symbols have always been used in spiritual traditions. The mantric (sacred
sounds, Jap. “kotodama”) and yantric (sacred shapes, Jap. “shirushi”) origins of the
Reiki symbols are well known in Buddhist traditions. Throughout history, symbols
have been used to represent or manifest aspects of faith and power within religious,
shamanistic, artistic and esoteric contexts.
When you reach the Reiki Master level you may begin to realise the plethora of dif-
ferent symbols out there in the world of Reiki and other healing disciplines. Some
Reiki Masters argue that many of these are not, in fact, true Reiki symbols, others
claim that they are.
Remember that Reiki is an energy with a consciousness of its own. Your intention
of love, light, wholeness and healing is more important than the decision of which
symbols to use.
The three symbols you were given at Reiki Level Two and the Usui Master symbol
are universally considered to have been introduced to the system by Usui himself.
And there are three more you will be attuned to in the Reiki Master initiation as you
will need them in order to give attunements, clear the energy of a space, set up a
Reiki grid and more.

HOW DO THE REIKI SYMBOLS WORK?

The Reiki symbols act as tools for consciously accessing the Universal Energy
Field (Rei). They help us to communicate our intention and request for support in
healing directly to the Source. As we activate the symbols we combine visualisation,
mantric practice (the sacred names of the symbols) and meaning into a most power-
ful focus. The symbols bring the mind into resonance with Reiki.

In Japan, each Reiki symbol is referred to as a “jumon” (a magical formula, an

incantation), which is drawn (the “shirushi” aspect) and spoken (the “kotodama”).
The use/activation of a Reiki symbol creates a strong energy configuration, a pow-
erful choreography in space and time that strengthens our connection with the
Source (Rei) and helps us to relate Universal Life Force Energy to any being, object
or event of our choice.
The works of contemporary scientists such as David Bohm and Karl Pribram pro-
vide further metaphors for understanding the deeper levels of reality with which the
Reiki symbols help us to connect. In a ‘holographic universe’ where the whole con-
tains all parts and every part reflects the whole, the Reiki symbols are practical tools
for the experience of the Sacred Truth that “All is One.”
As human beings, we are meaning making organisms who create symbolic repre-
sentations and interpretations of the world in order to be able to interact with it. The
creation and use of symbols is at the very nature of all human doing. The Reiki sym-
bols are examples of this aspect of the human nature applied to healing. They are a
set of “keys” for accessing the infinite energy and grace of Rei.
The symbols require an attunement from a Reiki Master to work and you should
always instruct your new Reiki Level Two students to use the variations of the sym-
bols to which you have attuned them.
10
THE USUI AND THE TIBETAN MASTER SYMBOL
USUI DAI KO MYO AND TIBETAN DAI KO MYO

T
(dye-ko-me-oh)

here are two Reiki Master symbols, one has been introduced to the system by
Usui himself, while the other one is seen as a modern Western addition. Both
work on the same level, share the same mantra/sacred name and have the same
purpose. These symbols are the keys for opening up the crown chakra when you
give an attunement. They also significantly increase the amount of energy directed
by your intent when they are used for advanced applications of Reiki. You can
choose which one you prefer at the time or you can use both together at any time.
When giving an attunement, always use both Master symbols as outlined in the fol-
lowing sections of this manual. Many advanced techniques start with the Usui
Master Symbol followed by the Tibetan Master Symbol.

The sacred name/mantra of the Master symbols means:

Dai = great, big; all powerful.

Ko = light; shine; ray.
Myo = clear; bright; radiance.

“Great Enlightenment”, “Great Divine Radiance”, “Great Radiant Light of

Wisdom”,“Great Light of Brightness”, “Great Shining Light”, “Great Luminous
Shining”, “Treasure house of the Great Beaming Light”, “Great Being of the
Universe, shine on me.”

THE USUI MASTER SYMBOL - DAI KO MYO

This symbol is globally recognised as the Master symbol which Mikao Usui origi-
nally used.
It carries powerful spiritual connotations. Its form originates from three Kanji, a
style of written Japanese language using Chinese characters. It bears some resem-
blance to Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen which is the other Kanji-based Reiki symbol. In
Japan, the phrase “Dai Komyo” is used in several Buddhist mantras and meditations
and not just by Reiki practitioners alone.

THE TIBETAN MASTER SYMBOL - DAI KO MYO

Being a modern Western Master symbol in the tradition of Reiki, it is actually an

ancient Tibetan symbol also known as “Dumo”.
The spiral is a universal archetype for the unfolding of creation, for evolution and
the expansion/contraction of the Universe. Galaxies form spirals, energy spirals
through the chakras, the DNA in every cell describes a double helix spiral, many
forms of plant and animal life create 3-dimensional spirals.
An ancient symbol from Tibet has come into the modern Western world. Reiki and
other ancient practices have been absorbed into a modern way of living. They are
becoming much more accessible and are releasing more and more love and light
into the world.

11
Examples of uses for the Master symbols:

• Used in conjunction with Reiki healing techniques, both Master symbols help to
create a stronger connection between the physical body and the Higher Self in both
the giver and receiver.
• They help the unlimited wisdom and power of the Divine to manifest in a person’s
subtle bodies (see p.51). “They help heal dis-ease from its highest source, from its
first cause. The spiritual body levels (i.e. subtle bodies) contain the blueprint or tem-
plate from which the physical body is derived. Healing at this level makes for pro-
found changes (..).” (D. Stein in “Essential Reiki”)
Everyone’s Higher Self holds the blueprint of perfect health. The Master symbols
help restore and activate that blueprint in the physical body.
• They help protect the healing work that has been done.
• They focus and intensify our engagement with the Reiki energy.
• They support a greater sense of wisdom, wholeness, fulfilment and completion.
• They are particularly powerful for strengthening the immune system. During
every moment of our life, our immune system decides what contributes to our good
health and what does not, what belongs to our body and what does not. The Reiki
Master symbols support the immune system by attuning us to our Higher Self, the
supreme template of our identity.
• They help to open up energy fields (the human aura, the aura of animals, plants,
crystals, water, nature spirits, the energy fields of buildings and spaces etc.) to the
love and healing power of Reiki. They are therefore used during attunements and
during every treatment and every application of an advanced technique performed by
a Reiki master.

After being attuned to the Reiki Master symbols, start every process or ses-
sion with both or one of them to consciously connect with the Source.

From my own personal experience I recommend that you start every Reiki session
with the Usui Master Symbol followed by the Tibetan Master Symbol. For example,
draw them over your hands and the receiver’s body.

“As the rational mind can see that all matter is energy, the spirit can see that all
energy is love, and everything in creation can be a mathematical equation for the
mind and a song of love for the soul.”
Juan Mascaro in the introduction to the “Bhagavad Gita”

DAI KO MYO - THE TIBETAN MASTER SYMBOL

14
OTHER SYMBOLS FOR THE REIKI MASTER

T
DAI SHE MUA KAN

he meaning of the mantric name of this symbol is traditionally presented as "The

Fire Serpent". It is used during an attunement to activate or stir the kundalini
energy in the student’s root chakra and direct it up the spine.
In contexts other than attunements, Dai She Mua Kan can be used to activate and
support the connection of the above and the below, of celestial and earthly energies
as in the multi-dimensional Reiki Energy Grid (see page 34).
The Tibetan name of this symbol is “Nin Giz Zida” which also translates as “The
Fire Serpent”. Nin Giz Zida is another name for Kundalini, a Sanskrit word meaning
either "coiled up" or "coiling like a snake".
This Reiki symbol is considered to support energetic opening, helping the receiver
to become more receptive to the Reiki.

There is an interesting resemblance to “Nin-gish-zida”, the name of a

Mesopotamian deity. Ningishzida is the patron of medicine and a god of nature,
magic and fertility.

An attempt to translate the Japanese components of this mantra could lead to;
Dai - great, big
Sho - (She as a pronounciation of Sho?) true
Wa - (Mua as a pronounciation of Wa?) harmony
Kan - observation

RAKU

The name of this symbol means "The Lightning Bolt" or "The Diamond
Thunderbold” or “Banking the Fire". It is used at the end of the attunement
process to cut the energetic connection between the Reiki teacher and the student
and to ground the energies. During an attunement, the auras of the teacher and the
student are connected and it is in these few minutes that energy blockages are lifted
from the system of the student and released into the ground with the help of the
teacher’s aura.
The Raku is a good symbol to use at the end of any interaction with a person or a
place, to cut any disempowering energetic connections, enabling you to start afresh
at the next encounter. Raku strongly resonates with the intention to finish one’s busi-
ness and to live in the present moment, in the “here and now”.

In Japanese, Raku Lai means “Falling Thunder” = lightning.

Raku is a symbol of spiritual awakening and intense presence. True awakening

shakes the foundations of one’s personality (from latin persona, the mask) like thun-
der.

THE REIKI ATTUNEMENTS

I
WHAT IS AN ATTUNEMENT?

t is likely that you will be asked this question when you teach Reiki and there are a
number of ways of answering it. One of the best ways to describe attunements is
that they are profound, indescribable miracles. In the space of 5 to 10 minutes a
Reiki healer is created. The process happens through the Reiki Master. This is an
important distinction: Whilst the Master performs the process of the attunement, the
actual changes happen through him/her. It is the Universal Energy which creates the
healer - the Master is privileged to take part.
“...[an attunement] when performed with a student, results in the capacity to channel
Reiki for self and others.
... [the attunement] is the doorway into the most sacred of experiences - communion.
As the Master prepares and performs the ritual, the student opens to receive the
experience of being in communion, at one, with the energy of Reiki, with the Master
and with himself.”
Phyllis Lei Furumoto

When you give an attunement, you invite increased amounts of Reiki into your
body and direct it to the receiver using your intent, your physical & subtle bodies and
the power of visualisation. The energy comes in through the crown and the root
chakra, loops inside the body and builds up until it exits through the hands, mouth,
third eye and the other chakras. The Master transmits this high frequency energy
into the energy system of the student whose capacity to channel and hold Reiki
expands. The attunement is an initiation ritual designed to support energetic purifi-
cation and re-connection with the Source (Rei).
The light of a Reiki attunement seems to shine brighter and brighter every time one
is passed. Although we may try to explain the process in descriptive terms, the true
essence of giving and receiving an attunement remains beyond words.
Whenever you give someone a Reiki attunement, bring to their awareness that the
power and the value of the attunement is NOT to be judged by their experience
during the attunement. Some may experience very little, others may go through
very intense states. Both is fine! Validate every experience that your students have.
Be free of anticipation or expectations of how it should be. Allow it to be whatever it
is. Trust your students’ inner wisdom and the infinite consciousness of Reiki.
The overall process for passing attunements is the same for all levels (Reiki I, II,
and III). The difference lies in how the symbols are placed into the receiver. These
differences are clearly outlined in the section of this manual on the specific attune-
ments for each degree, see pages 22 - 27.

THE REIKI DEGREES - TIMING AND STYLE

When you read about the history of Reiki you will find different attunement styles,
different ways of drawing the symbols and different opinions as to what should be
taught on a Reiki course. Some Masters insist on 3 months between Reiki I and II,
some require their trainee Reiki III's to do a one year apprenticeship, some do all
three levels in one weekend. Generally, the Reiki degrees have been divided in the
following way:
18
* Reiki Level 1
* Reiki Level 2
* Reiki Level 3 (Master Practitioner)
* Reiki Level 4 (Master & Teacher)

This training combines the last two levels. There are some Reiki schools, however,
that divide Reiki into 8 levels, so you can see the scope of the possibilities.
I would like to make you aware that many people experience an adjustment period
after an attunement, as the receiver becomes accustomed to the new vibration of
energy. I recommend the daily use of Reiki to support the integration of the energy
into all aspects of your life.

THE “TRADITIONAL” AND “NON-TRADITIONAL” STYLES

In the beginning, Usui did not use a specific attunement process. He attuned his
students through his energetic presence during the time they spent with him. From
1922, an attunement was performed as part of a Reiki initiation. Today’s ways to
attune in Western style “traditional” Reiki draw on Hawayo Takata’s adaption. The
“non-traditional” method of our lineage includes additional energetic elements (see
“Hui Yin” and “Violet Breath”) in order to create a more powerful and integrated
process.
You may come across Reiki practitioners who question the authenticity of such
“non-traditional” approaches to Reiki. It is at the Master level that the differences
between “non-traditional” and “traditional” Reiki become clearer. A “traditional” Reiki
initiation in Takata’s style consists of four identical attunements for Reiki I and of one
each for Reiki II and Reiki Master level. The “non-traditional” Reiki initiation into our
lineage consists of one highly empowered attunement for Reiki I and of one each for
Reiki II and Reiki Master level. During this training, you will be instructed in both
styles.

Both Hayashi and Takata made changes to Usui’s original system. But Usui him-
self embraced evolution and change too and modified his methods over the years.
He placed intuition over control, growth over rigidity.
Takata made changes and omitions to adapt Usui’s Reiki system to her Western
audience. Since she brought Reiki to the West, many different styles have been
developed. Elements were re-discovered, practices from other energy healing sys-
tems were integrated, newly channeled symbols and methods were included.

Today, there are at least 45 different Reiki styles being practiced and the number
keeps growing. For any of these to truely be a Reiki style, the following elements
need to be present.
1. The Reiki attunement or Reiju, which enables the practitioner to perform Reiki.
2. All Reiki techniques are part of a lineage and have been passed from teacher
to student. The attunement connects the student to the lineage.
3. Reiki is a conscious spiritual energy. As an expression of Universal Con-
sciousness it is guided by infinite intelligence, not by the practitioner’s mind.
4. Reiki can only do good. No abuse is possible. Reiki only responds to the
intention to heal.

19
REIKI ATTUNEMENTS - RAISING THE ENERGY

T
INTEGRATING CHI-KUNG: THE MICROCOSMIC ORBIT AND THE HUI YIN

he Hui Yin point (“The Gate of Death and Life” in Taoist Esoteric Yoga) is a major
energy point located between the anus and the genitals on the perineum. It is
the start point of the ‘Governing Channel’ meridian, which rises up the body through
the spine and the brain, ending on the roof of the mouth, and the ‘Conception
Channel’ meridian, which rises up the mid-line of the front of the body, ending at the
tip of the tongue. When the Hui Yin point is closed by contracting the muscles of the
pelvic floor and the tip of the tongue is placed on the roof of the mouth, just behind
the upper front teeth, then both channels are connected and form a circuit of Ki
known as the Microcosmic Orbit.

The Hui Yin Point

When giving attunements, Reiki enters the body and loops through the Microcos-
mic Orbit where it builds up beyond the usual level. This allows the Master to per-
form a powerful transmission of energy which opens the student’s channel for Reiki.
The Hui Yin and the tongue must be held for the entire time of giving the attunement
to prevent the energy from escaping.

The Microcosmic Orbit

If for any reason a person is physically unable

to close their Hui Yin point, they will still be able
to give Reiki attunements.
The consciousness of Reiki and the Universe
will support their intent and will provide all the
assistance they need.

EXERCISES FOR STRENGTHENING THE MUSCLES OF THE PELVIC FLOOR

Contract the muscles in this area twenty times in a row and then hold them for as
long as you can. At first, you may find it easier to clench the anus and buttocks at
the same time to assist the closing of the Hui Yin point. Also, practice contracting
these muscles continuously while you go about your daily activities (at work, on the
train, in the car, watching TV etc.). As you continue, it will become easier and easier
and you will be able to contract them for longer periods of time. Your muscular co-
ordination will develop so that you will be able to isolate the different muscle groups
into back, middle and front. It is the middle area that is important to hold for the
attunements. After plenty of practice, you will find that closing the Hui Yin becomes
easy and natural and you will feel the extent of the physical benefits initiated by the
exercises. Likewise, make it a habit to touch the tip of the tongue to the roof of the
mouth whenever you’re silent.

"Your body is the most sacred temple, for it is where Heaven and Earth conjoin."
The Hathors

THE VIOLET BREATH

Combining the powers of breathing, visualisation and the Microcosmic Orbit, the
Violet Breath supplies the energy for the Tibetan Master symbol to enter the stu-
dent's crown and to open their being to the attunement.
To the human eye, violet is the highest visible colour vibration within the light spec-
trum and thus the highest visual energy frequency we can apply to a visualisation.
Violet is the colour associated with the Crown chakra. The Violet Breath opens the
student’s Crown chakra as well as their aura and attunes the pulse of their DNA to
the Reiki coming in.

HOW TO DO THE VIOLET BREATH

1) Contract the Hui Yin point and place your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
2) Draw in a breath, imagining it as white light coming down through the fontanel,
through the tongue, down the mid-line of the front of your body (the Conception
Vessel), through the Hui Yin point and up along the spine (the Governing Vessel)
to the centre of your head. Imagine the white mist filling your head.
3) Allow the white mist to turn to blue and to begin rotating clockwise. As it rotates,
imagine it turning to violet.
4) Within the violet light, picture the Tibetan Master symbol naturally emerging from
the swirl.
5) As you exhale, breathe the Tibetan Master symbol and the violet light into the
student's crown chakra and imagine the symbol moving into the base of the skull
as you chant to yourself the sacred name of the Tibetan Master symbol three
times.

THE REIKI LEVEL 1 ATTUNEMENT PROCESS

P repare the space for the attunement process. If you wish to, evaporate essential
oils. Set the lighting. Arrange the chairs, cushions, crystals and other objects
you wish to include as part of the process. Clear the energy of the space (see page
31). Set up the Reiki Energy Grid (see page 34) or simply draw all seven Reiki sym-
bols in the air and send them into the walls, the floor and the ceiling.
Say a prayer or make a decree upward, calling in your Higher Self, the Reiki
Guides, the spirits of Usui, Hayashi and Takata, the Love and Light of the Universe.
Call upon whoever or whatever has most meaning for you.
Intend the attunement process to be for the highest good of all.

Invite the students into the space you have created and ask them to choose a
seat. Briefly explain the basic sequence of events, emphasising they can be com-
pletely relaxed since you will give them cues. Advise them to keep their eyes closed
throughout the entire process and to focus their attention on the current experience.
Arms and legs are to be kept uncrossed for the energy to be able to flow freely.
Watches should be taken off, clothing should be comfortable. Reassure your stu-
dents that you will let them know when the process is complete.
Brush the aura of the student with a few downward strokes. If you wish, use a
drop of frankincense pure essential oil on your hands for this.

1) Stand behind the seated student at a step away and take a deep breath.
Draw the Usui Master symbol and put it into each of your palms, silently repeat-
ing its sacred name three times each time.
Draw the Power symbol and put it into each of your palms, silently repeating
the sacred name three times each time.
Draw the Power symbol down the front of your body, visualising it going through
each of your main chakras, silently repeating the sacred name three times.
2) Draw the Tibetan Fire Serpent from the top of the student’s head down the spine,
the spiral level with the root chakra and guide the energy upwards with a movment
of your hand whilst silently repeating its sacred name three times.
3) Step forward to stand closely behind the student and gain energetic rapport. Rest
your hands lightly on their shoulders. Then place your hands on the top of their
head.
4)With a deep breath, contract your Hui Yin and create the Microcosmic Orbit.
Open your hands with the intention to open their Crown Chakra and visualise this
to happen. Do the Violet Breath, visualising the Tibetan Master symbol going
into the student’s crown and moving down through the head to the base of the
skull 1. At the same time that the symbol is moving through the head, silently
repeat its sacred name three times and guide its movement with your hand.
5)Draw the Usui Master symbol in the air above the head and send it down through
the skull, guiding its movement with your hand to the base of the skull whilst
silently repeating its sacred name three times.
6) Repeat with the Mental/Emotional symbol.
7) Repeat with the Distance symbol.
8) Gently bring the student's hands with palms together above their head. Draw the
Power symbol above the hands and send it through the hands and the head
down to the base of the skull, silently repeating its sacred name three times whilst
guiding its movement with your hand.
22
9) Gently put their hands down in front of their heart chakra.
10) Now move to the front of the student. Gently take the students hands, place
them in your hand and open them out flat like a book. Draw the Power symbol in
the air above the hands and send it down into the hands. Silently repeat the
sacred name three times and gently tap the hands three times. Close their hands
and put them back in front of the heart chakra.
11) Keep holding their hands and blow a gentle sweeping breath over the hands,
down to the root chakra, then up to the crown chakra, then down to the solar
plexus and back up to the hands.
12) Now move behind the student again. Gently rest your hands on the student’s
shoulders. Blow energy into their crown chakra and look down through their
crown, down the spine for the red energy ball of their root chakra. As you are
looking down through all aspects of them, silently repeat a positive affirmation
three times such as "You are a now a powerful and confident Reiki Level One
practitioner” or “The Universe blesses you as a Divine tool."
13) Hold the palms of your hands gently against the back of the students head and
visualise a door with the Power symbol on it being closed and locked. Silently
repeat its sacred name three times. Then silently repeat "I now seal this process
with Divine Love and Wisdom." three times. While you do this, intend and feel that
the process is sealed and complete and the student is now attuned to Reiki and
connected directly to its source.
14) Rest for a moment in gratitude. Then step back from the student. Draw the
Lightning Bolt symbol in the air between yourself and the student. Brush the
aura of the student with a few downward strokes.
15) Move to the front of the student and hold your hands at waist level with the palms
facing toward the student. Inhale and hold the breath briefly, then exhale while
relaxing the Hui Yin point and releasing the tongue from the palate. Intend the
releasing energy to act as a blessing for the student.
16) Quietly say to the new Reiki Practitioner: “When you are ready, take a deep
breath and open your eyes.”

NOTE: When attuning two or more students in a row, keep holding the Hui-Yin
point closed and the tongue placed against the roof of the mouth when moving from
one to the other. Move to the next student after step 14) and complete steps 15) and
16) at the very end, sharing the released energy with all the students in one go.

Into the medulla oblongata. The medulla oblongata is the lowest part of the brain stem which
extends through a hole at the base of the skull to become the upper part of the spinal cord. It con-
tains important centres that govern respiration and circulation.
“Man’s body battery is not sustained by gross food (bread etc.) alone, but by the vibratory cosmic
energy. The invisible power flows into the human body through the gate of the medulla oblongata.
This sixth bodily centre (back of the Third Eye) is located at the back of the neck at the top of the five
spinal chakras. The medulla oblongata, principal entrance for the body’s supply of universal life
energy, is directly connected by polarity with the Christ Consciousness centre in the Single Eye
between the eyebrows.” Paramahansa Yogananda in “Autobiography of a Yogi”
In many traditions, the medulla oblongata is considered to be the gateway to consciousness. When
placing the Reiki symbols there, they act as seed vibrations, continuously attuning the energy body to
Reiki.

REIKI MASTER ATTUNEMENT PROCESS

In the Reiki Master attunement you will be placing all seven symbols into the stu-
dent’s hands. The Reiki Master attunement enables the student to perform the
Reiki attunements for all levels.
Prepare the space for the attunement process. If you wish to, evaporate essential
oils and/or burn incense. Set the lighting. Arrange the chairs, cushions, crystals and
other objects you wish to include as part of the process. Clear the energy of the
space (see page 31). Set up the Reiki Energy Grid (see page 34) or simply draw all
seven Reiki symbols in the air and send them into the walls, the floor and the ceiling.
Say a prayer or make a decree upward, calling in your Higher Self, the Reiki
Guides, the spirits of Usui, Hayashi and Takata, the Love and Light of the Universe.

TAKATA’S “TRADITIONAL” ATTUNEMENTS

In “traditional” attunements in Takata’s Usui Shiki Ryoho style, you do not use the
Violet Breath or close the Hui Yin. Also the Fire Serpent, Lightning Bolt, and
Tibetan Master symbols were not part of Takata’s system. Apart from these omis-
sions, Takata’s “traditional” Usui Shiki Ryoho (“Usui style healing method”) Reiki
attunements and the attunements of our Usui/Tibetan Reiki style are identical.

REIKI I

For Takata’s Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki I attunement, you repeat the Reiki I attune-
ment process four times, omitting all the elements of the Usui/Tibetan style men-
tioned above.

REIKI II

Takata’s Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki II initiation consists of one attunement, omitting all
the elements of the Usui/Tibetan style mentioned above.

REIKI MASTERY

Takata’s Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki Mastery initiation consists of one attunement,
omitting all the elements of the Usui/Tibetan style mentioned above.

See page 69 for a description of Reiju, considered by some to be a “traditional”

Japanese style of passing a Reiki attunement.

SUMMARY OF THE ATTUNEMENT PROCESS

T he attunement processes described on the pages 22 to 27 are identical in most

of their parts. Below is a summary of the differences.

REIKI I

Only the Power symbol goes into the hands above the head and at the front. The
Mental/Emotional symbol and Distance symbol go into the head only.

REIKI II

The Power symbol, Mental/Emotional symbol and Distance symbol go into the
hands above the head and at the front.

REIKI MASTER

The Power symbol, Mental/Emotional symbol, Distance symbol, Usui Master sym-
bol, Tibetan Master symbol, Tibetan Fire Serpent and Lightning bolt go into the
hands above the head and at the front.

28
THE SELF ATTUNEMENT

G iving Reiki Master attunements to yourself refines and raises the vibration of your
personal energy field, fosters self healing and increases your well-being. You can
create these highly beneficial effects on your own, whenever you choose to.
For re-attuning yourself, the intention you hold is the most important part along with
how you use your imagination. You can use, for example, a teddy bear, a pillow or your
legs to represent yourself during the self attunement process. In case you intend your
legs to represent yourself, sit and bend them at the knee, intending the left leg to be your
back, the right leg to be your front, with the knee of each leg representing your head.
During this process your non-dominant hand can represent both hands. Draw out the
symbols in the air above your non-dominant hand and tap both hands together. If you
wish you may lay crystals or pebbles on your thighs to represent your chakras.

THE DISTANCE ATTUNEMENT

I n my view, it is NOT possible to send proper Reiki attunements to others at a distance.

Thus, I send the healing attunement only, unless the person is a Reiki healer already, in
which case you could send the same level Reiki attunement that they have received in
person from a Reiki teacher before. Use a teddy bear or a pillow placed in a chair to
represent the person you intend to send the attunement to. Draw the Distance symbol
over the teddy bear or pillow and repeat the person’s name three times intending that
the teddy bear or pillow shall represent them and that the attunement will go to them.
Then proceed with the attunement process.
For the front part of the attunement, draw a picture of two hands on a piece of paper
with the person’s name on it and tape it to the front.
Conclude the distance attunement by drawing the Distance symbol over the teddy
bear or pillow representing the person.
It is important that during a proper initiatory Reiki attunement, the teacher and
the student are both fully present. This includes their physical and etheric/pranic
bodies. For the transmission to be complete, they need to meet in the same place.

PRACTICE ATTUNEMENTS

T he initiatory Reiki attunements should only be practised on people who have already
received the attunement that you want to practice on them. Alternatively, use a teddy
bear or a pillow as described above without them representing anybody.

29
THE HEALING ATTUNEMENT

P repare the space for the healing attunement as for any other attunement. Intend the process to be
for the highest good of your client.
Invite your client into the space you have created and ask him/her to take a seat. Advise him to
keep his eyes closed throughout the entire process and to focus his attention on the current experi-
ence. Arms and legs are to be kept uncrossed for the energy to be able to flow freely. Watches
should be taken off, clothing should be comfortable. Reassure your client that you will let her know
when the process is complete. Brush his or her aura.

1) Stand behind the seated client at a step away and take a deep breath. Draw the Usui Master
symbol and put it into each of your palms, silently repeating its sacred name three times each time.
Draw the Power symbol and put it into each of your palms, silently repeating the sacred name three
times each time. Draw the Power symbol down the front of your body, visualising it going through
each of your main chakras, silently repeating the sacred name three times
2) Draw the Tibetan Fire Serpent from the top of the client’s head down the spine, the spiral level
with the root chakra and guide the energy upwards with a movment of your hand whilst silently repeat-
ing its sacred name three times.
3) Step forward to stand closely behind the client and gain energetic rapport. Rest your hands lightly
on her shoulders. Her hands remain relaxed on her thighs. Then place your hands on the top of her
head.
4) With a deep breath, contract your Hui Yin and create the Microcosmic Orbit. Open your hands
with the intention to open his Crown Chakra and visualise this to happen. Do the Violet Breath, visu-
alising the Tibetan Master symbol going into the client’s crown and moving down through the head
to the back of the heart chakra. At the same time that the symbol is moving through the head and
neck, silently repeat its sacred name three times and guide its movement with your hand.
5) Draw the Usui Master symbol in the air above the head and send it down through the skull and
neck, guiding its movement with your hand to the heart chakra whilst silently repeating its sacred
name three times.
6) Draw the Power symbol in the air above the head and send it down through the skull and neck,
guiding its movement with your hand to the heart chakra whilst silently repeating its sacred name
three times.
7) Repeat with the Mental/Emotional symbol.
8) Repeat with the Distance symbol.
9) Now move to the front of the client. Draw the Power symbol in the air above the head, then guide
it into the crown chakra and further down into the solar plexus chakra with a movement of your hand.
Silently repeat the sacred name three times and gently tap the top of the head three times with your
finger tips.
10) Repeat with the Mental/Emotional symbol.
11) Repeat with the Distance symbol.
12) Repeat with the Usui Master symbol.
13) Repeat with the Tibetan Master symbol.
14) On a single exhalation, blow a double sweeping breath from the solar plexus up to the crown,
back down to the root chakra and then up again to the crown and beyond, intending to sweep out all
the energies that no longer support the client.
15) Now move behind the client again. Gently rest your hands on the clients shoulders. Blow energy
into his crown chakra, look down through his crown and see a soft pink energy ball in the client's
heart. Send a positive affirmation like "You are healed by divine love and wisdom now" into the
client's heart. Place your dominant hand on the back of the client's heart chakra and the other hand
on their shoulder.
16) Hold the palms of your hands gently against the back of the clients heart and visualise a door with
the Power symbol on it being closed and locked. Silently repeat its sacred name three times. Then
silently repeat "I now seal this healing process with Divine Love and Wisdom." three times. While you
do this, intend and feel that the process is complete and the client is now being healed by Reiki.
17) Rest for a moment in gratitude. Then step back from the client. Draw the Lightning Bolt symbol
in the air between yourself and the client. Brush the aura of the client with a few downward strokes.
18) Move to the front of the client and hold your hands at waist level with the palms facing toward the
client. Inhale and hold the breath briefly, then exhale while relaxing the Hui Yin point and releasing
the tongue from the palate. Intend the releasing energy to act as a blessing for the client.
19) Quietly say to your client: “When you are ready, take a deep breath and open your eyes.”

SPACE CLEARING
INTRODUCTION

T here is much more to the world than meets the eye. There are "things" that exist which
we cannot perceive with the naked eye, that some of us perceive through our feelings
and an expanded sense of intuition. One kind of these “things” are inappropriate or “per-
verse” energies, Xie Qi in trad. Chinese medicine.

Whether a certain quality of energy is “positive” or “negative” depends on the context. The
energy released by rotting leaves brings fertility to the soil, but it would upset peoples’ guts if
the rotting were to take place in their salad sandwiches. The term “perverse energy” refers
to energetic configurations that can interfere with the energy systems of humans, plants, ani-
mals and spaces and challenge their integrity.

These inappropriate or “perverse” energies are part of our everyday surroundings and can
influence how we choose to feel/respond in certain situations. Just as we might feel differ-
ently and act differently depending on the sounds that are present in a space. We might feel
less relaxed and able to act in an empowered manner if our environment is filled with dishar-
monious noises, whereas if we introduce harmonious music at a low volume, this can assist
us in whatever we wish to achieve.

Clearing the energy of a room or a space is about clearing out any inappropriate energy
that may interfere with us performing at our best. Once the space is energetically clear, we
then introduce a fresh and supportive energy (using the Reiki grid for example) which
enhances our ability to do what it is we want to do.
“Space clearing” is “space healing” and the principles for healing a space are the same as
for healing a body. Blocked and/or inappropriate energy is being helped to get back into a
natural flow and good health is the result.

To clear a space energetically, bring in new energy of a high vibrational frequency such as
Reiki. Any energies present with an incompatible frequency will be transformed or cleared.
The new energy of a high vibrational frequency (Reiki) is used to remove inappropriate ener-
gies and to clear blocks. Remember the metaphor of the block of ice in a stream of warm
(=high vibrational frequency) water.
In a healthy space, supportive energy is able to move about freely and inappropriate
energy is being filtered out or transformed (this is what Feng Shui is about).

ASSESSING THE CURRENT ENERGY OF A SPACE

First, assess the energy of the space. Move around the space, sensing the energy with
your whole being. Roll up your sleeves and move your hands over the walls, furniture etc.
Slow down and tune in for a few moments whenever you notice a change. Tune in from your
Third Eye and Sacral chakras. Allow your attention to spread into the space, connect with it.

You could use dowsing as a method of locating inappropriate energies in the space. To do
this, take your rods (or pendulum) and set your intention to locate unsupportive vibrations
and energy blocks. As you move around the space, allow the rods to move freely. When
you come into areas where what you are aiming to detect is present, the rods will move
either inward or outward as a signal.

This will give you the focal points for the clearing work, as well as giving you a method to
check that the work is complete at the end. Thoroughly re-assess the space after you have
done a clearing either through your intuitive senses or dowsing.
31
Dowsing rods can be used to
assess the energy of a space
before and after a clearing.

BRINGING IN HIGH VIBRATIONAL FREQUENCIES

As a Reiki Master, you have many tools for bringing in new energy of a high vibra-
tional frequency. Allow your choice to depend on your intuition at the time. Always
come from a place of love and act with a sense of respect.

Some powerful tools are:

• The Reiki symbols: Flow Reiki into the space, each corner, the walls, the floor
and the ceiling. Use every Reiki symbol that you feel guided to and as many times
as it takes. Draw the Power symbol clockwise to help stuck energy get unstuck,
use Raku to help it let go.
• Sound: Use toning, chanting, bells, chimes, gongs, drums, musical instruments.
• Smells: Smudge with essential oils or quintessences. Burn sage, cedar, copal,
moxa, oils, frankincense or other resins and wood powders (Sandal, Palo Santo).
• Air and sunlight: Open all doors and windows, create currents of fresh air,
hoover the floor to stir up old stale energy and let the currents of air carry it away.
• Colours: Use coloured light or visualise colours and light, paint the walls or use
colourful paintings and drapes.
• Certain plants and crystals: Place spider plants and rock crystals around the
room. Frequently cleanse and re-programme the crystals, see page 36.

32
ENTITIES

A special case of inappropriate energies is what is often called an “entity”, kuei in

Chinese and bhuta in Sanskrit. Dramatised by folklore surrounding possession and
exorcism, entities are inappropriate energies with a fragmentary consciousness of
their own. Whilst entities may appear as ghost or demons to some, they are often
just energy parasites pursuing simple desires in a mechanical and repetitive way. In
most of the cases, an entity is a fragment of the astral body (= the mental and emo-
tional body) of a human or an animal, which was left behind after death.
Much of the astral body shatters at death and resulting fragments sometimes go
searching for a new host to provide them with life force. Any human or animal whose
energy field is weak and forced open (due to illness, drugs, trauma, general anaes-
thetics, general depletion, strong feelings for the deceased etc.) can become a host.
Even though such entities can be cleared successfully by a qualified clearer, it is
important NOT to attempt a clearing without the proper techniques and training.
This Reiki Master & Teacher training does NOT qualify you to perform entity
clearings. Becoming an entity clearer requires special and thorough training such
as provided by the Clairvision School (see www.clairvision.org).

CHANTING AND TONING

C hanting is an excellent way to focus the mind for the purposes of healing and
meditation. Chanting (from the Latin cantare, to sing) plays an important role in
all spiritual traditions around the world and the singing of overtones (or harmonics) is
considered to be the most powerful use of the human voice.
Overtone singing is a type of chanting which produces two distinctive notes instead
of one. The base note, called the "fundamental" is a continuous note providing the
"bass" or backdrop for the overtone. The overtone is the higher pitched bell-like
sound which varies in it's pitch according to the shape of the chanter's mouth.

1
There are four mouth shapes you can use for overtone chanting:

Make the fundamental note through your nose as if you were saying the word "on"
with a French accent. Whilst doing this move your lips open and closed like a fish

2
to make the overtone. Experiment with your lip shape to change the tone.

Make the fundamental note deeply from the diaphragm. Whilst doing this, move
the mouth through the shapes of the vowel sounds "oo-oh-ah-eh-ee" and back

3
again to hear the overtones.

Make the fundamental note through the mouth as if saying the "r" sound from the
American pronunciation of "word". Make the overtones by sliding the tongue
edges along the inside edges of the upper teeth maintaining a gap through which the

4
air can pass between the tongue and the roof of the mouth.

Make the fundamental note through the mouth as if over-accentuating the "L"
sound from the word "Love". Maintaining the "L" syllable, experiment with the
shape of your lips and cheeks to make the overtones.

THE MULTI-DIMENSIONAL REIKI ENERGY GRID

S etting up a Reiki Energy Grid as described below is a powerful way to energeti-

cally programme and enrich any indoor space. The lines or meridians of the grid
turn any room into a multi-dimensional energy vessel, blessing with Reiki every being
and activity inside. Much like a hologram, every part of the grid reflects the whole.

THE SET-UP

The grid can be set up in any room that has been energetically cleansed. Stand in
the centre of the room. Connect with the heart of Mother Earth below and the Great
Central Sun above. Take a few moments to consciously establish and feel this con-
nection. Enjoy the continuous inflow of celestial energy from above and have it open
and fill your heart. Let it flow through you and into the ground below.

Draw both Reiki Master symbols in the centre of the room and spread their energy
into the walls, the floor and the ceiling. Add any other Reiki symbols in accordance
with the specific energy environment you’d like the grid to create. Intend that the
vibration of the walls, the floor and the ceiling will be attuned to the higher frequen-
cies transmitted by the symbols.

Imagine and feel how the energies of the symbols expand and meet in the centre
of the room, in the centre of your chest. And as they meet in your heart they connect
with the heart of Mother Earth, grounding them, and the Great Central Sun, securing
supply from the infinite source.
State your intention that from now on the grid will continuously fill the room with
Reiki to support, for example, healing, positive change, manifestation, communica-
tion etc.
Draw Dai She Mua Kan out in the air in front of you with the spiral coming at the
same level as your heart and pull it inside your body. Imagine and feel how Dai She
Mua Kan takes over your place in the centre of this multi-dimensional grid as you
step back out of the centre. The spiral of Dai She Mua Kan is now the all-connect-
ing heart chakra of the newly created Reiki Energy Grid.

You are the centre of the Reiki

Energy Grid whilst setting it up.

34
The Reiki Energy Grid forms
a multidimensional
six pointed star.

SUMMARY OF THE PROCESS

1. Cleanse the space.

2. Stand in centre of space:

Call for help, Usui, Hayashi, Takata & Reiki guides.

3. Connect with Mother Earth & Great Central Sun.

Feel the energy flow through you, connecting above & below in your heart.

4. Send Usui DKM & Tibetan DKM & the other Reiki symbols into
floor/walls/ceiling.

5. State intent and time frame.

6. Connect energy of walls, floor & ceiling in your heart.

Feel the energy flow through you and into the space.

7. Draw DSMK. Pull its spiral into your heart to take your place. Step back.

HOW TO COLLAPSE THE GRID

In case you would like to collapse a Reiki Energy Grid that you set up in the way
described above, simply step into the centre of the room, taking over the place of the
Dai She Mua Kan.
Use Raku to cut all the energetic connections in the room, thereby collapsing the
grid. While you do this, intent the Reiki and the Reiki symbols to go to the heart of
Mother Earth.

35
CLEANSING, PROGRAMMING AND DEDICATING
CRYSTALS WITH REIKI

A s a Reiki Master, you can take working with crystals to a new level. Both Master
symbols are powerful tools for interacting with the energy fields of crystals.
Crystals are naturally growing structures and some of their electromagnetic proper-
ties resemble those of the human energy field.
Crystals have the ability to absorb, store and emit energy and since information
can be encoded as energy patterns (e.g. as electromagnetic patterns on the mag-
netic hard disk of a computer; as energy imprints created in homeopathy; as a pat-
tern of reflected light waves in laser and CD technology, photography and film; etc.),
crystals can be programmed with information and dedicated to certain frequencies of
energy.
When we programme a crystal we transfer and imprint the energy patterns of our
thoughts and intentions onto the energy structure of the crystal. The use of the Reiki
symbols prepares the crystal and amplifies and protects the imprint.
Use whichever crystals you feel drawn to. Follow your intuition rather than books.
Rock crystal/clear quartz is a very powerful and universally applicable crystal. It is
highly responsive, easy to handle and widely available. If possible, choose a crystal
in its naturally grown shape rather than cut or tumble-polished pieces. Even though
the latter will work too, a crystal in its naturally grown shape will have a more coher-
ent and therefore more powerful energy structure.

The following process is an adaption of a technique presented by Diane Stein in

her book “Healing with Gemstones & Crystals” (p.21).

For its initial cleansing, leave the crystal in sea salt, rice or in the soil for 48 hours.
Or expose it to moonlight or place it amongst orange carnelian (which is able to
cleanse other crystals).
1. Hold the crystal in your hand and feel its energy. Send the Usui Master
Symbol and the Tibetan Master Symbol into the stone to open its energy field.
2. Now use Sei Hei Ki for clearing and cleansing its energy.
3. Focus on your programming intent, on the purpose you’d like the crystal to serve
and tune into the crystal to feel if it is willing to act in the way you wish. Should the
stone accept your intent (you will get a direct knowing/feeling of this), state in your
mind “So be it” and fix it into the crystal with Cho Ku Rei.
4. Dedicate the crystal by stating: “Only the most positive high-level energies may
work through this crystal.”
5. Add the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen for healing stones.
6. Finish with the Usui Master Symbol and the Tibetan Master Symbol and ask
that the crystal become self-clearing. It will not become entirely so, but will need
far less clearing than before.

36
THE REIKI CRYSTAL GRID

T he Reiki Crystal Grid is a powerful configuration using eight crystals charged with
Reiki energy so that they will continuously send Reiki to anyone (people, animals,
plants, places, events) whose picture or name you place in the grid. This advanced
technique is more effective than the use of a single crystal and can be used to send
Reiki to many destinations at the same time.

Choose eight crystals by following your inner guidance in finding those that would
work best in your grid. Prepare each crystal individually as outlined in “Cleansing,
programming and dedicating crystals with Reiki” on page 36 of this manual. At
step 3. state as your intent that the crystal shall become part of a powerful Reiki
Crystal Grid.
You will need six crystals for the outer part of the grid, one for the centre and one
to use as a master crystal. To create the outer part of the grid choose six single ter-
minated crystals. The central crystal of the grid can be single or double terminated,
a crystal pyramid, a crystal ball or a crystal cluster. The master crystals needs to be
single or double terminated and of an elongated shape.
The eight crystals of your grid could all be rock crystals or you could choose a
selection of quartzes, selenites, calcites, flourites etc.

Once they are prepared, arrange the outer six crystals in a hexagramme about
eight to twelve inches across with the points toward the centre. Place the central
crystal in the middle. The master crystal is placed outside the grid, off to one side.

Take a picture of yourself and write a positive open ended affirmation on the back
(for example “The love and wisdom of Reiki guides and empowers me to fulfil my life
purpose.” or “I am completely healed by divine love and wisdom now.”) and place it
under the central crystal. If you wish, you may add pictures of others, lists of names,
maps of areas, your Multiple Healing book etc. and place the central crystal on top of
the stack.

It may be a good idea to place your grid on a piece of wooden board or strong card
so that you can move it around if you need to. It is fine to use small amounts of blue-
tack to keep the crystals in place. Keep your grid in a sacred private place.

You will need to charge your Reiki crystal grid to keep it empowered. To do this,
hold the master crystal between your hands and draw the Distance symbol over it
followed by any other symbol you are guided to use. Then give Reiki to the master
crystal for five to ten minutes.

Once the master crystal is charged, use it to draw the Distance symbol over the
grid followed by any other symbol you are guided to use. Then point the master
crystal at the central crystal and begin moving it out to one of the outer crystals, then
move it over to the crystal next to it, then move it back in to the central crystal, then
back out to the same outer crystal, then move over to the next outer crystal and in
and out and continue directing the energy of the master crystal in and out and
around.
37
You can go around either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on how you
are guided. Go around the grid seven times.

As you so charge the Reiki crystal grid with your master crystal, say a continuous
series of affirmations or prayers such as “I charge this grid with light, with light, with
light, to heal, to heal, to heal. I charge this grid with Reiki, with Reiki, with Reiki, to
heal, to heal, to heal.”
Once your Reiki crystal grid is charged, anyone whose name or picture you place
under the central crystal will continuously receive distance healing. You can also
place descriptions of your goals (see steps 1, 2 & 3 of “Empowering your goals
with Reiki”on page 61) and they will be blessed with Reiki.

THE REIKI PHARMACY
Important note: The technique presented on this page is FOR USE ON
YOURSELF ONLY. IF YOU ARE TAKING ANY PRESCRIPTIONS, ALWAYS CON-
SULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE MAKING ANY ALTERATION. However, the
techniques described below are safe to be used in addition to any other mea-

T
sures and tend to enhance the positive effects.

he process for cleansing, programming and dedicating crystals with Reiki, as out-
lined on the previous page, can also be applied to working with water. On Earth,
water is present in all states of matter, as a gas (steam, clouds), in its liquid form and
as a solid crystal (ice). Most living organisms are composed of mainly water; the
human brain consists of 95% water and the rest of the human body of approx. 75%
water; so, most of what our bodies are is living, intelligent water.
In 1987, the French immunologist Jacques Benveniste developed an experiment
that strongly suggests the ability of water to record information within its own energy
field in complete absence of any other substance or energy. His experiment has
been successfully repeated by twelve other researchers in three different countries.
Please refer to Deepak Chopra’s book “Quantum Healing” (p.112-114) for details.
The water molecule H2O is a bipolar system with a positive charge at one end and
a negative charge at the other, just like a magnetic bar. And like magnetic iron or
crystals, water has the ability to absorb, store and emit energy and information.
Therefore we can programme water and successfully turn it into a remedy for amaz-
ing results.

Use pure natural spring or mineral water only. Apply the technique presented on
page 36, simply substituting the crystal with a glass of water. At step 3., you can pro-
gramme the water either homeopathically or allopathically.

Homeopathic programming: put your non-dominant hand on the part of your

body where you experience the symptom and hold the glass of water in your domi-
nant hand. Intent the water to receive an energetic imprint of the symptom that will
serve as a homeopathic impulse for healing.

Allopathic programming: put both hands around the glass of water, form in your
mind a strong representation of what would be the opposite of the symptoms (e.g.
pain - pain free; stiffness - softness; burning - soothing & cooling etc.) and intent the
water to receive an energetic imprint that will serve as an allopathic impulse for heal-
ing.

One common benefit of any remedy is that it activates the power of our positive
expectations and beliefs (which is why placebos work so well). Therefore you may
enjoy performing this technique as an empowering and comforting ritual in times of
need.

THE ELEMENTS OF HOLISTIC HEALING

Intention, the mutual desire for wellness.

Relationship, expresses and holds the intention; rapport.
Ritual, embodies the intention and the relationship; the technique.
(Robert Dilts, co-developer of NLP)

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MEDICAL CURE AND HEALING

Medical cure - the patient remains passive, waits, hopes, is a victim of an illness;
the practitioner repairs the patient, demands, prescribes; a ritual of control and
authority.
The cure consists of treatments for removing the symptoms, the physical manifes-
tations of the medical condition.

Healing - the person takes action, releases, intends wellness, is “a hero on a jour-
ney” of self-discovery; the practitioner attends to the client, asks and listens; a ritual
of acknowledgement, facilitation and support.
The healing consists of supporting the whole person as a bio-psycho-social sys-
tem, of empowering the entire person so that they can release the past, forgive
themselves and others, make changes, restore balance and a healthy flow of energy
and move towards what they want in life.

THE “LOGICAL LEVELS” OF HEALING (adapted from Robert Dilts).

Logical levels, a model coined by the anthropologist Gregory Bateson, provide us

with a basic structure for holistic (from “holon” - the whole) healing. These “levels”
represent various dimensions of subjective experience. They are interconnected
aspects of a whole.

For a person to heal, change may be necessary at several levels of experience:

A. External conditions - where & when I do what I do; the environment, constraints
and opportunities.
B. Behaviours - what I do or have done; actions and reactions.
C. Capabilities - what I can do; skills, mental strategies and plans.
D. Beliefs & values - why I do what I do; meanings, motivation, permission.
E. Identity - who I am; sense of self, mission and purpose.
F. Spiritual - THAT I AM; that what is through me (‘person’ stems from the Latin
‘per sonare’ = to sound through), interconnectedness, the greater whole, the
global system, vision & overall purpose.

A MODEL FOR HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

F or this section, I would like you to consider a model that identifies three aspects of
human consciousness:

THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND

The unconscious mind is the one who takes care of all the things that usually hap-
pen outside of everyday awareness; the beating of our heart, breathing, digesting our
food etc. It takes care of the running of the body. It is the storehouse for our memo-
ries, our beliefs, values and self-image. It takes care of learning and dreaming. One
of its main concerns is to preserve the body and to protect it from harm. It is the
unconscious mind who generates the impulses that prevent us from running across a
busy road or cause us to run from a threat. It generates all our emotions and does
so always for a purpose that is in line with our best and highest good. It is the
unconscious mind who is creating and un-creating dis-ease in the body in response
to the way we live our life. And this it also does in line with our highest good.

THE CONSCIOUS MIND

Your conscious mind is the one who does the rational thinking. It is the director of
your actions, you could describe it as the captain of your ship. Any processes
(actions, thoughts, perceptions) of which you are aware, are monitored and evalu-
ated by the conscious mind.
Without a conscious mind you would have little direction, you would not be able to
set goals and make plans. It is very important therefore to use your conscious mind
to give the directions that lead towards the outcomes you really want.

THE HIGHER CONSCIOUS MIND OR HIGHER SELF

Your Higher Self is the aspect of yourself who connects you to the Universal
Source, to Rei. It is your Higher Self who remembers what lessons you have come
to learn in this life, what your missions are and what you’ve come to contribute.
Having a strong connection with your Higher Self means you will be following your
life path with clarity. As you strengthen your connection, you find your thoughts and
actions to be increasingly in line with fulfiling your life purpose. This results in a deep
sense of well-being and fulfilment.

You are permanently connected with your Higher Self, it is an aspect of you, and
although this model represents the three minds as separate, they are really all one
within you. To consciously connect with one’s Higher Self means to surrender the
limitations of the conscious mind to this infinite aspect of ourselves.
The unconscious mind mediates between the conscious mind and the Higher Self.
The conscious mind receives messages or guidance (indicative of the Higher Self)
as intuitions (indicative of the unconscious mind).
When all three minds are in alignment, we become consciously aware of our intu-
itions and allow them to guide our actions. It is through the body and the uncon-
scious mind that the Higher Self gives us feedback about how well we are “on track”.
All problems stem from a misalignment of the three minds, all solutions are a nat-
ural expression of their re-alignment.
41
THE BREAKFAST OF MASTERS

T his section is not about nutritional advice, but about three qualities which two of
my hypnosis teachers, Julie Silverthorn and John Overdurf, have found to be
greatly enhanced and refined in all “enlightened masters”. The following is based on
distinctions John and Julie made in their book “Dreaming Realities”.

INTENTION

Intention is the ability to focus, sharpen and maintain one’s attention and purpose
over time. Like the light in a laser beam, the conscious, unconscious and higher
conscious minds come into alignment, giving our intention the power to cut through
fluff and obstacles.
Powerful intention arises from clear thinking. We see, hear and feel the intended
results and the results of the results clearly, vividly and expect them with a sense of
certainty. We know that this is what we want and the moment our intention becomes
absolutely clear, we send out a “telepathic cord” into the future which actually creates
the event at that point. To the extend that we maintain our intention, that event
becomes inevitable.
Magic is intention applied at a key moment, and key moments are created through
total alignment of all we are, do and have. When we lack such alignment, we live in
tension rather than live your intention.

ENERGY

The second quality of “enlightened masters” is the amount of energy they have
and are able to move through their bodies and transmit to others. A continuous
awareness of energy and how we invest it at any moment, plus a sound knowledge
of how to refresh and build our energy are key ingredients to living masterfully.
The connection between energy and intention is central. Intention guides the flow
of our energy. Intention, starting with a thought, plus energy equals action and cre-
ation. It is the actions we take what connects our intention with our energy and
grounds them into physical reality. Intention without energy will lead nowhere.
Energy without intention is likely to stray to someone else’s intentions or to merely
create bouncing whirls of chaos.
All “enlightened masters” work on the principle of maximum focus and minimum
effort. By having released all emotional baggage, transcended all conflicts and com-
pleted and healed their past, they have reclaimed their energy and can make it fully
available to the here and now and the future.
Whenever you are about to make a decision, ask yourself “Will this option raise or
lower my energy?” and let your body answer. Or in other words, “Would I choose
this option out of love or out of fear?” These questions provide useful guidance.

THE EGO METER

The third key that “enlightened masters” possess is “the ego meter”. It is the state
of possessing an ego instead of being possessed by it. It is the conscious relation-
ship with your Higher Self, Spirit, Source, Rei, something greater than the ‘little self’,
resulting in the knowing that “I am more than I think I am”, “ I am really not the
one doing it anyway” and “I am a channel. It happens through me.”
42
THE HUMAN ENERGY FIELD (THE AURA)

L iving cell tissue generates, stores and transmits energy. Scientists are nowadays
able to confirm a wide range of the energetic activities which create the energy
field that pervades and surrounds the human body. These include, but are not lim-
ited to, electrical, magnetic and electromagnetic energies, light (so called “biopho-
tons”), heat and sound.

Every human energy field has its own unique frequency. Human energy fields
interact with each other as well as with the energy fields of animals, plants, minerals
etc. The longer and more intimate the interaction between the energy fields, the
greater the energy exchange. Every energy field contains an abundance of informa-
tion and reflects physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of the individual.

“Everything that is alive pulsates with energy and all of this energy contains informa-
tion. (...) Your physical body is surrounded by an energy field that extends as far out
as your outstretched arms and the full length of your body. It is both an information
centre and a highly sensitive perceptual system. We are constantly ‘in communica-
tion’ with everything around us through this system, which is a kind of conscious
electricity that transmits and receives messages to and from other people’s bodies.”
Caroline Myss in “Anatomy of the Spirit”

We perceive these messages from and within the energy field usually at the
unconscious level, with some of them occasionally coming to conscious awareness
as an intuition, a gut feeling. Intent and techniques such as “scanning” make this
information more easily available at the conscious level.

“Our thoughts and feelings are powerful forces and energetic realities. They are the
substance of which our experience of the world is made of. They influence our envi-
ronments, our energy fields and they influence the physical tissue within our bodies.
In this way your biography - that is, the experiences that make up your life - becomes
your biology.” (Caroline Myss)

The human energy field is most commonly perceived 1) kinesthetically, through

feelings and sensations; 2) visually as an aura of soft white or pastel coloured light;
3) intuitively through a direct inner knowing.

STRENGTHENING THE AURA

All spiritual, shamanic and yogic traditions are rich in techniques and recommen-
dations for strengthening the human energy field. A Reiki treatment or self-healing
session is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the aura.

Like the mind and the body, the aura thrives on a healthy life style: a good healthy
and organic diet, optimism and positive thinking, clean and fresh air, a sense of pur-
pose in life, healthy relationships, honesty, doing the work you love, being in touch
with nature, enjoying the beauty of the arts, expressing yourself, correct breathing,
sufficient rest, appropriate exercise, meditation and prayer and other ways of realis-
ing the Divine.
43
CHAKRAS - THE SEVEN WHEELS OF THE SOUL

T he chakras mediate all energy within, coming into and going out of the body and
the aura. They play a major part in the distribution of energy for the physical,
emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of your being.

“The soul as consciousness pervades and holds its bodies of manifestation (our
physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies; the different aspects of our energy
fields) together as a cohesive, functional unit through certain focal points. In Indian
tradition these centres of force are called chakras; the word in Sanskrit means
‘wheel”.
D.V. Tansley in “Subtle body”

The chakras are interconnected through a network of energy channels. The yogic
tradition identifies three major channels (nadis) called Sushumna, Ida and Pingala.
They interweave and are normally depicted as a sort of ‘spinal column’ analogous to
the central nervous system. Their crossing points are the sites of the seven main
chakras. The sites of the seven main chakras correspond to the sites of the main
glands forming the endocrine system which produces the hormones in the body.

An abundance of further energy channels or nadis pervade our bodies, resembling

the meridians in traditional Chinese medicine. The nadis form an intricate web of
subtle energy streams. Certain texts speak of 350,000 nadis and 88,000 chakras
through which the life force (Reiki, Ki, Chi, prana) flows.

Listed below are the names of the seven main chakras together with the corre-
sponding glands and the colours and meanings commonly associated with each
chakra.

1. The Crown Chakra (Sahasrara Chakra); pineal and pituitary glands; violet or
white; the connection with the Divine Source, the source of Reiki.

2. The Third Eye (Ajna Chakra); pituitary and pineal glands; indigo;
psychic perception, power of the mind.

3. The Throat Chakra (Visuhuddhi Chakra); thyroid and parathyroid glands;

light blue; communication and expression, power of the voice.

4. The Heart Chakra (Anahata Chakra); thymus gland, the heart organ;
green or rose; emotional power, compassion, love.

5. The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura Chakra); adrenals; yellow;

personal power, self-esteem, confidence, gut feelings, intuition.

6. The Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthana Chakra); ovaries and testes, adrenals;

orange; one-on-one relationships, creativity, sexuality, fertility, will power.

7. The Root Chakra (Muladhara Chakra); ovaries and testes, adrenals; red;
the seat of kundalini, earthly vital energy, tribal power, physical survival.

RAPPORT
“Being on the same wave length with another person; being “in sync” with them.”
R. Dilts in “Beliefs”
“A relationship of trust and responsiveness.”

R
I. McDermott & J. O’Connor in “NLP and health”

apport is the therapeutic equivalent of the “law of resonance”. Within a relation-

ship of trust and responsiveness, the client opens up and resonates with the
higher frequency of Reiki and considers the suggestions of the practitioner. Like an
ice cube in the flow of warm water, the client’s energetic blockages dissolve in the
flow of Reiki.
Rapport goes beyond words. Even in silence, form aura to aura, the practitioner’s
positive beliefs, attitudes and expectations about the client and their healing abilities
transfer to the client and empower them. Beliefs, attitudes and expectations are
energy patterns which are being communicated via resonance when in rapport.

WAYS FOR ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING RAPPORT

1. Breathing together

Your partner simply sits silently. Pay attention to her/his breathing. Notice rate,
depth and location of her/his breathing. Find several ways to match and mirror
her/his breathing (adjust your own breathing, move your head back and forth at the
rate of her breathing, move your hand slightly up and down with her breath etc.).

2. Waves of one ocean

Go into peripheral vision. Pay attention to the space inbetween you and your part-
ner, to the space that connects you and your partner. Notice that you are both parts
of the same space. Imagine that space to be an ocean. Align your breathing.
Imagine that “you” and “the other person” are two waves of one ocean, rising up for a
while to touch air, to experience new points of view. Focus on the connecting ocean.
Feel oneness.

Consider: all characters in a dream emanate from one dreaming mind. Despite all
differences, they are expressions of one mind. Imagine and feel you and your part-
ner being dream-like expressions of one ocean of being.
“In the deeper reality beyond space and time, we may all be members of one body.”

got a bad knee today and I’d like you to spend much time on it.”) and/or based on
your intuitions and the guidance therefrom.
Scanning is an effective way to access fine perceptual abilities and it helps estab-
lish rapport between your and your client’s energy field. Messages will come to you
as intuitions, not to be delivered to the client as a diagnosis or a reading, but to be
used as guidance for the treatment you are about to give. Such guidance will allow
the Reiki practitioner to fine-tune the treatment and to perhaps enjoy a more pro-
found learning experience.

When during the attunement your palm chakras are being opened to the flow of
Reiki, the sensitivity of your hands to subtle energies is being heightened and contin-
ues to increase with practising Reiki. I therefore chose to present a scanning
process that includes the use of the hands.

During “scanning”, we move one of our hands through the client’s energy field from
head to toes at a distance of about three to five inches away from their body. As we
slowly move our hand, we closely pay attention to the sensations in our hand and in
our body and to any changes that may occur.

Scanning initiates a communication between you and the clients energy field. You
perceive consciously what the client communicates unconsciously. As well as to the
kinesthetic (feelings, sensations) parts of that communication, we closely pay atten-
tion to the visual (seeing the aura, colours, pictures) and auditory (sounds, voices)
information that may come to our senses and to our mind.

The objectives for scanning are to

• refine your ability to perceive energy by paying attention to it,
• perceive, calm and centre yourself at the beginning of a treatment,
• make contact with the client and their energy field,
• detect areas in need of support and balance with the whole,
• ratify change by before/after comparison.
(See page 72 for details on the Byosen Reikan-ho scanning technique.)

THE PROCESS

1. Begin with a brief scan of yourself. Notice your state. Become aware of any
areas in your body in need of relaxation, energy, healing. Travel through your own
body like a “point of light, a tiny self” (B.A. Brennan) and take a good snap shot. This
will provide the basis for your knowing the difference between an impression of your-
self and an intuition about someone else’s state.

46
2. Calm yourself, enter a calm state. No internal dialogue. Feel calm, hear quiet-
ness, see the blank. Be quietness, openness and receptiveness as if you would see,
hear and feel the world for the first time ever - a clear and open mind.

3. Make contact with the client, hold their hands, look at them.

4. Sense the energy space. Go into peripheral vision. Focus your attention on
the space in between you and the client. Sense the energy moving in between.

5. Feel, hear and see or simply know. Scan for areas in need of relaxation,
energy, healing. Scan from the head down. “How do I know the difference between
perception and projection?” It is a learning process achieved through paying atten-
tion to the differences in your experience. At all times, intend and trust that you will
pick up on exactly what you need to, to best help your client.

6. (Optional) Ask the client for a symbol for where they are in their life right now.
They can describe the symbol or draw it or find it in your office.

Different people will have different ways of knowing the difference between an intu-
ition that represents a message from the other person’s energy field and an intuition
that is a projection of their own personal expectations or issues. The difference will
always be a difference in the qualities and specific details of the impression or intu-
ition (see page 48).

For some healers, an accurate intuition is indicated by the fact that they feel no
emotional connection to the impression whatsoever (Caroline Myss). They are
detached witnesses in order to see.

Again other healers will know that an intuition is accurate when they do feel the
other person’s feelings and emotions in their own body, but in a way that is different
from feeling their own emotions in their own bodies (Judie B. McReynolds). They are
both “self” and “other” in order to feel.

Scanning is a learning process achieved through closely paying attention and mak-
ing fine distinctions in the qualities of your experience. I recommend that within the
context of a Reiki session you keep what you pick up to yourself. This will avoid the
pressure of having to deliver meaningful insights to your clients and it will keep the
scanning light and fun, allowing your mind and senses to be relaxed, receptive,
open.
Minds are like parachutes - they only open once you’ve jumped.

“O Beloved, put attention neither on pleasure or pain but between these. Toss
attachment for body aside, realizing I am everywhere. One who is everywhere is
joyous.”
Shiva in the “Vigyan Bhairava”, transcribed by Paul Reps

THE QUALITIES AND SPECIFIC DETAILS
OF INTERNAL EXPERIENCE

Y ou are the creator of your experiences in life. Your senses, thoughts and feel-
ings shape the way in which you experience yourself and the world around you.
When you change the ways in which you think and feel, your reality changes accord-
ingly.

Every problem and every issue of any kind in your life will come to your attention as
a specific subjective experience. Explore the qualities and specific details of what you
experience inside your body and your mind. Make fine distinctions like an artist would
do. Study the artwork of your mind-body/body-mind.

When doing so, you access a mind-body interface with tremendous potential for
facilitating healing. Working with the qualities of internal experience allows you to use
the power of the mind for moving and redistributing energy in your body and your
aura.

Below is a selection of qualities which are particularly relevant when working with
health issues, presented in an order which is useful for their elicitation. When working
with clients, the gathering of this information is a prerequisite for the REIKI PSYCHIC
SURGERY technique (see page 49 f.) and Moving Energy (see page 70 f.).

Qualities and specific details of internal KINESTHETIC experience (sensations /

feelings / emotions)

Location of the sensation / feeling / emotion; where exactly inside the body;
Shape and size
Texture
Heavy or light weight, dense or loose
Moving or still
Hot, warm, cold or cool

Qualities and specific details of internal VISUAL experience

What colour
Bright or dim
Sharp edged or blurred

Qualities and specific details of internal AUDITORY experience

Voice(s) and / or other sounds; if voice, your own voice or someone else’s
Location of the voice(s) and / or sounds
Tonality
Volume

Qualities and specific details of TASTES AND SMELLS

Are there any tastes and / or smells
If yes, are they sweet, sour, salty, bitter;
Location and intensity.

REIKI PSYCHIC SURGERY

T he following technique can be used to support the healing of many kinds of

issues; physical health problems, emotional charges, energy blockages, difficul-
ties in managing one’s life, money, career, relationships etc. as long as the issue can
be felt in the body. Do not use this technique to attempt to clear entities (see
page 33 for more details on entities).

THE PROCESS
(For the following process, the client can lie down, sit or stand.)

1. Ask the client to describe the issue they would like to heal.
Check that they really want to let go and change.
Ask, “What will you gain from healing this?”
and “Have there been any benefits from not healing this yet?”
If yes, ask them to “think of other, healthy ways to get these benefits.”

2. Ask them to close their eyes and think of the issue.

Ask, “If this problem was somewhere in your body, where in your body
would it be?” This is easy as the client will usually feel tension or pain in an area
of their body whenever they think about the problem. If there is any difficulty in
choosing an area, ask them to take a guess with the idea that there is no wrong
answer.

Now ask the client to imagine they are looking into the area they have chosen
and ask, “If this problem had a shape, what shape would it have?”
This shape will be the shape of the trapped energy that is causing or representing
the problem. When dealing with a physical problem, it is important for the client to
perceive the shape as being (at least slightly) different from the shape of the organ
or the body part itself.

Continue by asking for the texture, temperature, weight, colour, sound etc. (see
page 48) so that the client develops a clear image of the block. Any answer they
give is OK and they don’t have to get all of the details. Location, shape, size and
colour will usually be sufficient for this technique.

3. Tell the client now to go inside and to ask the block directly what it is that he or
she needs to learn from it, to ask for the message it holds for them.
“What is the message from this block, which when you’ve got it, will allow
you to let go of the block and to completely heal the issue of ...?”
Keep it light and encourage the client that there are no wrong answers.
“Just if you knew...” and “It’s OK to take a guess...”

Ask the client to consider ways to put this message into positive action and to
commit to following through. “Consider how you can follow through, with
action, the message of the old block. Make sure all actions are positive.”

Now the trapped energy is ready to be released, if it hasn’t gone already. If the
client did not get any message or learning whatsoever then check again that they
really want to let go. Remind them of the gains from healing this.
49
If the rapport is insufficient, stop here and proceed with a standard Reiki treatment.

4. Draw the Usui Master Symbol and the Power Symbol onto the palms of your
hands. Draw the Power Symbol down the front of your body. Ground yourself in
your usual way. Spend a few moments breathing consciously and getting in touch
with your chakras, feeling how much Reiki is now flowing through them.
Once you feel the flow of Reiki, move your attention to your hands.

5. Extend your Reiki fingers, using one of the following methods (A or B or C):

A) Gently pull on your physical fingers visualising your energy fingers extending
outward up to about 8in/20cm into the air. Breathe in through partly closed lips so
you can hear the air flowing. Do three pulls on each finger and then pat the ends
of your "Reiki" fingers, feeling the sensations of touch on their tips.

B) Take your hand into the air and as you exhale sharply, flick from the wrist so
that the energy fingers extend through centripetal force. Flick each hand three
times. Imagine and feel the Reiki energy extending from your fingers like bundles
of laser beams.

C) Close your eyes and breathe deeply, focusing your attention on your palms.
With a few exhalations, extend a whole new energy hand out of each palm.
These hands can move through 3-dimensional matter and can therefore perform
energetic “surgery” inside your client's body.

6. Once you have extended your energetic fingers, draw the Power symbol over
both hands, then over the area where the block is located. Set your intention to
facilitate the client in moving the trapped energy out of his/her body and to the
the Great Light, the Source of Reiki above.
Explain this to the client and tell them to imagine the blocked energy to be
moved and guided by the energy coming from your hands.

7. Stand firmly on the ground and imagine that you are reaching in and grabbing
the block with your extended Reiki fingers, drawing it out and sending it off. Fully
engage in this with undivided attention, strong intent and vivid imagination.
Ask the client to imagine that the blocked energy moves via your fingers
onto your palms as you inhale and off into the Great Light as you exhale.

Draw the clockwise Power Symbol to connect the trapped energy to the Great
Light of Reiki above. Use your breathing. On the inhale, draw the trapped
energy out of the client’s body and onto (NOT into) your hands. On the exhale,
blow the energy off your hands and into the Great Light of Reiki above.

Now ask the client how they feel and if the block, the shape is gone.
If necessary, continue until the shape is gone or has been replaced by a new,
healthy energy.

8. Conclude the intervention with giving Reiki to the treated area for at least five
minutes. Draw the Usui & the Tibetan Master symbol and the Power symbol
(& other symbols if you feel guided to) over the area to further seal the treatment.
50
9. Draw Raku in the air between you and the client to break the connections and
to clear the space. Retract your Reiki fingers by pushing them back as you blow
out of your mouth onto the tips of your fingers.

10. Continue with a standard Reiki treatment for the remainder of the session time.

REIKI PSYCHIC SURGERY AND ITS ACTION ON THE SUBTLE BODIES

To understand how Reiki Psychic Surgery works, a brief look at the Vedantic model
of subtle, i.e. non-physical bodies can be very helpful. Vedanta is one of the main
systems of Hindu philosophy of which the Upanishads, the Brahma-Sutra and the
Bhagavad-Gita are the key texts.
According to Vedanta, human life manifests itself in the five koshas and the three
shariras. In Sanskrit, kosha means ‘sheath’ or ‘envelope’ and sharira means ‘body’.
During life, these subtle bodies act as aspects and functions of our wholeness, not
as separate parts.

The five koshas are:

1. anna-maya-kosha, the envelope made of food; the physical body.
2. prana-maya-kosha, the envelope made of life force; the etheric body.
3. mano-maya-kosha, the envelope made of manas (mental & emotional
reactions); the conditioned astral body.
4. vijñana-maya-kosha, the envelope made of buddhi (the universal knowing of
the Heart, Spiritual Intelligence); the purified astral body.
5. ananda-maya-kosha, the envelope made of bliss, peace, joy; the enlightened
astral body.

The three shariras are:

1. sthula-sharira, the ‘gross body’ made of anna-maya-kosha and prana-
maya-kosha.
2. suksma-sharira, the ‘subtle body’ made of mano-maya-kosha and vijñana-
maya-kosha.
3. karana-sharira, the ‘causal body’ made of ananda-maya-kosha.

The koshas and the shariras are the vehicles of the Higher Self, the immortal
Spirit-Essence of human beings (for ‘Higher Self’ see also pages 12, 41 & 42).

Reiki Psychic Surgery (as well as the ‘Moving Energy’ technique on page 70) helps
to create a conscious ‘dialogue’ between the individual koshas, thus making it eas-
ier to clear the samskaras (imprints, psychological wounds and emotional charges)
and energy blockages that obscure the Higher Self and its ability to bring healing.

The pain, tension or sensation that accompanies the problem/blockage is felt in the
physical and the etheric body and is used as a doorway into the corresponding
thought forms and emotions of the astral body (see p.49, steps 1 to 3). Then, Reiki
and the power of intention are activated to uproot the blockage from the astral and
the etheric and thereby from the physical body (see p.50, steps 4 to 8).

LANGUAGE FOR HEALING

A s you already have experienced many times: the way you use language makes
a huge difference. Use your language in an empowering way, for yourself and
for your clients.
Here are a few things to play with. Use them with your clients, friends and family,
colleagues and yourself.

TEMPORAL SHIFTS.

First acknowledge the problem, then put it into the past tense and bring the solu-
tion into the near future and/or the present using verb tenses.
Client: "I have this terrible head ache."
You: "For how long have you had it?" (...) "So, you've had a terrible head ache up to
now, didn't you? Now, since you had it for probably long enough, what we're going to
do next is giving lots of Reiki to where it was."

PRESUPPOSITION OF THE DESIRED STATE, OF HEALING AND GOOD HEALTH.

It's a good thing to believe in everybody’s natural ability to heal themselves. You
can support this ability in your clients by presupposing this useful belief (and other
empowering ones) as a truth in everything you say to them. Hold this belief in your
mind and your heart as a strong truth and you will automatically presuppose it in your
speech. By accepting what you say, your client processes what you presuppose as
a reality, which means that they are already half way there just by having a conversa-
tion with you.
An example: "Do you want to sit or to lie down while you allow the Reiki to help
you heal the cause of that head ache?"
In this question it is presupposed that the client is going to heal the cause of that
head ache, the only thing in question is whether they will heal sitting or lying down.

REFRAMING

Reframing means to help someone change their interpretation of an experience in

a way that is more useful and empowering to them. That's the way good humour
works and it's a lot of fun.

Change the meaning of an experience.

Client: "I can't get rid of my head ache."
You: "This means you're obviously good at holding on to sensations. I wonder how
soon you'll begin to hold on to pleasant things in your head."
This reframe example changes a problem into a useful skill.

Change the context in which the meaning is created.

Client: "This won't heal anymore. I'm too old now."
You: "That's right. You're far too old and experienced to not fully believe in your
body's own healing powers."
In one context, high age appears to be a disadvantage, in an other context (of
gathering experience) it appears to be a resource.

52
TEACHING REIKI
THE ESSENTIALS

W ith every level of Reiki, the attunement is always the heart piece of the course.

REIKI LEVEL 1

When teaching Reiki Level 1, the following points are essential in the course:
• Be aware of the group’s energy: Teaching Reiki Level 1 is usually the least easy
of all three degrees because the people on the course are new to Reiki and it can
take a little time to assist them to feel comfortable.
• The history of Reiki: It's important to tell the story of Mikao Usui’s quest as it
gives the group a framework for the origins of Reiki.
• Give the attunement: In a Reiki Level 1 course, the main thing to do of course, is
the attunement.
• Get the energy flowing: When you have passed the attunements, have the new
healers practice on each other to get the energy flowing.
• Hand positions for treating self and others: It's important to teach self-healing
and hand positions for treating others to give students a structure for the use of
their new skills. Review the chakras with them if necessary.

REIKI LEVEL 2

When teaching Reiki Level 2, the following points are essential in the course:
• The attunement: Again, this is what expands the energy manifold to create a
Reiki Level 2 practitioner.
• The symbols: You will need to explain the three Reiki Level 2 symbols. You can
do this with handouts and by practising drawing the symbols with the group. Give
examples of applications for each of the symbols. Discuss how the variations of
the symbols came about and the different ways in which the symbols can be
drawn.
• Distance healing: It is essential to teach your students a technique for doing dis-
tance healing. Allow sufficient time for thorough practice.
• Automatic and multiple treatments: Being able to do automatic and multiple
treatments opens up a world of exciting possibilities for the Reiki Level 2 practi-
tioner. Make sure you discuss the techniques involved.

REIKI LEVEL 3/MASTER & TEACHER

When teaching Reiki Level 3/Master & Teacher, the following points are essential
in the course:
• Attunement: Once again, giving the attunement is the core of the training.
53
• How to give attunements: You'll be teaching your students how to give Reiki
attunements at this level. Allow plenty of time for practice.
• The Reiki Master symbols and their applications.
• Advanced techniques for working with Reiki : You may want to include space
clearing, the Reiki grid, Reiki psychic surgery, the healing attunement etc.

COURSE STRUCTURE

It is important to structure your course so as to maximize the learning, enjoyment,

comfort and experience of your students. To do this consider the following points:
• Timing: We all have a natural energy rhythm (the “Ultradian Rhythm”), which
moves from absorbing information (paying attention to external data) to integrating
information (paying attention to one’s own thoughts; evaluating, reviewing and
organising data) about every 90 minutes. It is important to schedule regular short
breaks to allow for the integration of information.
• Variety: Aim to move from a section with a lot of content (information) to a sec-
tion with demonstrations and practical exercises. Variety assists students to
remain interested and stimulated.
• “First Noa then Noho”: This is a Hawaiian saying that means: Clear out old
energy first then bring in new energy. Start a Reiki course with aura cleansing or
light bodywork, meditation etc. before bringing in the Reiki energy during the
attunement. This will make it a more comfortable experience and will facilitate a
more rapid integration of the Reiki energy.

TEACHING THE REIKI HEALING TREATMENT

A
INTRODUCTION

s a Reiki Master you are familiar with giving a Reiki Healing treatment. Passing
this knowledge on to your students is an essential part of teaching Reiki. In this
section I will highlight the key points for teaching the treatment. You may also wish
to refer to the Reiki Level 1 manual and to the literature on the ‘recommended read-
ing’ list.

PREPARATION FOR TEACHING

Just as with giving a treatment, the preparation of the space is very important. The
room should already be prepared for your teaching. Do all the preparation you would
normally do for a healing treatment, explaining each step as you go. Give your stu-
dents a clear structure to follow and be prepared to answer questions as to why you
do what you do. This is very much taught through demonstration and answering
questions.
It is also important that your students have a clear view of you and the subject on
whom you are demonstrating.
54
TEACHING THE TREATMENT STRUCTURE

Subdivide the treatment into parts which the students can easily memorise. Allow
lots of time for practice, as this is where many questions arise. Give an overall struc-
ture like:
• Preparing the room and oneself.
• Client intake.
• Handpositions, sequence.
• Concluding the session.

THE STUDENTS' EXPERIENCE

Usually, the hands-on practice of the treatment is the students’ first opportunity to
feel the flow of Reiki in their hands and the rest of their being. This is a great oppor-
tunity for you as the Reiki Master to assist them in having a profound experience. By
giving your students a simple sequence for the practice (following the seven major
chakras), they can focus their attention more fully on the sensations of the Reiki flow-
ing.
Encourage them to notice sensations in their hands, chakras, bodies. Any sensa-
tion is a sign that Reiki is flowing. For many their hands will get hot, whilst some will
get cold hands or feel tingling sensations etc. It is very important at this stage that
you ratify any sensation to be a positive sign that the Reiki is really flowing. Make
sure the students give each other feedback and again, ratify any experience they
have as a positive sign of the flow of Reiki.
Every student will feel something. It is impossible for a living person with a healthy
and sober nervous system not to feel something at any time. It’s about paying atten-
tion. Some people may not be used to paying full attention to subtle bodily sensa-
tions. Encourage them to take the opportunity to begin to do so now.

55
ELEVEN UNIVERSAL TIPS
FOR DESIGNING A TRAINING

I would like to give you some advice on how to prepare your teaching, just a few
simple and general hints that I and other trainers find useful to be aware of.
Facilitating learning is an exiting and rich field, and teaching always means mutual
learning. So when you’re going to teach you’re going to learn, and it’s good to learn
a few things about teaching upfront.

1. CHUNK DOWN

Structure the material you’re going to teach. Create portions, sections, appropriate
chunks of information, put them in a dynamic and building sequence and design the
exercises in a way that ensures success for your students at each level. Backtrack:
“You’ve just learned how to xyz. And since you now know to xyz, you can easily
learn to abc.”

2. FEED ALL SENSES

Address and feed all the senses, the eyes (visual), the ears (auditory) and the bod-
ily sensations (kinesthetic) of your students, sometimes even their senses of taste
and smell (e.g. during smudging, use of essential oils etc.). Visual “food” includes
pictures and diagrams on flip charts, demos in front of the group etc. Auditory “food”
includes story telling, chanting and toning, music, discussions etc. Kinesthetic “food”
includes hands-on exercises, body work, movement, breathing etc. Remember that
all learning is state dependent. Your students will learn most easily and profoundly
when in a state of alert relaxation (the “learning state”) and being presented informa-
tion in a way that they can easily encode in all of their sensory channels (visual, audi-
tory and kinesthetic).

3. A COURSE MANUAL

Issuing a course manual helps the students to relax and to pay full attention to
your teaching, taking notes only occasionally.

4. FEEDBACK

Whenever we learn a new skill, we very much rely on feedback in order to know
how well we’re doing. Encourage your students to give and to implement given feed-
back. Now, giving verbal quality feedback is an art in itself. The “feedback sand-
wich” is a great way to do it well. Start by pointing out what your student did well (the
top slice of bread), then tell them what they could improve and give clear and applic-
able instructions on how to do this (the filling) and finish by mentioning how well they
overall did (the bottom slice of bread). The structure of the feedback sandwich
describes a complete loop, but we’re not quite there yet.

56
5. WHAT WHY, LOOPS AND STORIES

Begin the training and each of its sections by saying what they are going to learn
and why it is important to learn this material, thus creating intention and motivation in
your students. Begin to tell stories, not finishing any of them until the end of the
training and/or the current section. This is what we refer to as opening and closing
loops, a simple yet sophisticated way to frame and embed information within stories
within stories within stories, facilitating the mind to “download” and integrate the
embedded information with ease. Maybe at bedtime many years ago when you were
a little child somebody began to tell you a story, maybe a fairy-tale, maybe one of
life’s true stories, and then would not finish it because it was time to sleep and you
closed your eyes with anticipation and impatience. Now, before you woke up the
next morning I would like to add a few more things about learning and teaching.

6. USEFUL STATES AND POINTS

Find or create stories that induce useful states like trust, curiosity, anticipation,
confidence etc. and that carry relevant messages in their points, e.g. messages
about the importance and power of intention, about trusting etc. Be aware that a
story can be very short, just a few sentences and still work perfectly for these pur-
poses. It’s great to also choose stories from your own experience and to allow your
feelings to come up and fill your words with life.

7. YOU’VE HEARD THIS BEFORE

Have your students become somewhat familiar with what you’re going to teach
before you (and this can be hours before) actually teach it. How? Just mention or
demonstrate some things by the way when appropriate, telling that you’ll come back
to this more in depth later, so that your students have heard of or seen these things
before. And then, later, tell them “I’ve mentioned this before. I’d just like to add
some details...” and they will relax more easily.
• Teach the material,
• Demonstrate it and have your students
• Exercise the new skill in order to integrate it.

8. DISCUSSING QUESTIONS IN THE OTHER’S SHOES

You may encourage discussion and handle questions. The “back to front” rule will
serve you greatly in this. Have your students agree upfront to ask you when they
have questions. The other students next to them would certainly be helpful but might
not know the most appropriate answers yet. When asked a question, briefly “step
into the other person’s shoes” to get in touch with the purpose of the question and
the underlying need, and then choose your answer.
Always answer the person, not just the question.

57
9. DON’T SAY “DON’T...”, DO SAY “DO...”.

Tell your students what to do as opposed to what they shouldn’t do. Use positive
language in this sense, giving applicable instructions of what to do and how to do it.
Whenever a “Don’t do xyz” is appropriate, make sure you add the encouraging
instruction of what to do instead.
Facilitate learning by inducing positive, resourceful states of alert relaxation
(through story-telling, meditations, light body work) and be an example of these
states so that you’re already relaxed while your students follow.

10. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE FUTURE

“Future pace” the learnings. Presuppose your students’ use of the new skills in the
future and refer to the appropriate future contexts by saying things like “When you
are going to see your first/next client remember to...” or “I’d like you to stop for a
moment and think of all the times in the future you are going to use these skills and
notice how much you’ve learned and how easily you can apply these learnings suc-
cessfully ...now.”

11. IN THE END COMPLETE ALL THE LOOPS YOU OPENED

So when you woke up the next morning, the morning after the beginning of the
bedtime story, you probably forgot all about it, went through your day and learned
many new things. And when it came to bedtime again and you were told the rest of
the story, your mind pulled the pieces together, allowing the learnings of the day to
integrate and settle in on the deepest level, so that ever since they are available to
you automatically.

58
MARKETING

“In life you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you communicate.”
- Tad James

F or our purposes here, let us understand marketing as a way to communicate the

value of our services to other people who thereby learn about us and about what
we do and who in many cases will want to benefit from what we offer.

When you begin to set yourself up as a Reiki Master and trainer, amongst the
ways to market (to communicate) your sessions and trainings will probably be
leaflets, cards for notice-board, adverts in selected literature, an internet website,
notes for various listings, press releases, talks and tasters, answering enquiries
when people call you on the phone and perhaps appearances on local radio and
television.
Whichever ways you choose or create to communicate the value of your services,
there are a few general guidelines I would like to share with you in this manual.
Beware, should you choose to market your Reiki skills not just for facilitating gen-
eral well-being and health but to assist people in overcoming specific medical dis-
eases which you would call by name (e.g. Cancer, AIDS etc.), I strongly advice you
to consult a solicitor because there are laws regulating the advertising of services
that target people with some medical conditions.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Energy exchange

At any time be fully aware that you can add massive value to peoples’ lives.
I highly recommend to establish an energy exchange for your services, which could
be charging a certain amount of money per session/training or various ways of barter
which reflect the value of what you do. Look around to find out how much others
charge for similar services. It’s a good thing to explore the field in relationship to
which you operate so that you can consciously choose your own position.
It’s good fun to imagine that clients and students will receive a tenfold return of
what they paid you and it increases your comfort in taking what you deserve.

The benefits

Communicate the benefits of your services. Tell people what they will gain/learn,
how they can benefit from your services so they understand the value, the positive
results and effects of your services on their lives. E.g.“Relax deeply in the flow of
Reiki and enjoy a greater sense of well-being. A Reiki session in the evening, will
help you to renew your vitality after work. It will allow you to more easily be
refreshed and centred for the next day.”

59
Good questions to ask yourself

• What do I offer? (the service or training x) What do I do?

• What’s important to me about offering x? Why do I do it?
• Who will benefit from x? What might be their needs?
• How is what I offer different from what others do in the field? How is what I do
special and unique?
• Whom do I want to offer my services to? If there were any preferences, who do I
enjoy most working with? Adults or children or both? Women or men or both?

Answer these questions abundantly and you will have generated a good basis for
creating highly effective advertising.

Monitor

Monitor the response and success rate of your advertising. Stop advertising that
doesn’t work and do something else. Decide how much you want to spend on
attracting people and monitor the balance.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are
powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually,
who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the
world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won’t feel inse-
cure around you. We are meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make
manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us: it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to
do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liber-
ates others.”

EMPOWERING YOUR GOALS WITH REIKI

Invite Reiki to bless and empower your goals. Your imaginations and daydreams of
what you want to be/do/have become even stronger attractors when blessed with
Reiki.

1
THE SEVEN GOLDEN STEPS TO ACHIEVEMENT

Decide what it is that you want and when, where and with whom you want it. Do
not specify any other people in this process unless you have their permission and
co-operation. State it in the positive (what you want, not what you don't want). Ask
yourself: "How will I know when I've got it? What's important to me about hav-

2
ing/doing/being this?" Make sure it's important to you.

Vividly imagine having what you want as if you were experiencing it now, through
all your senses. Feel how it feels to have what you want and, if necessary, make
adjustments (e.g. bigger internal pictures with more light and colours, more sound
etc.) until it feels great. Make sure you're congruent about having what you want. In
case there were any objections, find their message and their highest intention and

3
integrate these into what it is that you want. Again, make adjustments if necessary.

While in this "as if now" state, consider the effects and consequences of fully hav-
ing what you want. What effect does it have on the people around you, on other

4
areas of your life, on the planet? Is it totally O.K. to have things this way?

Then step outside of that future you and look at yourself within that future scene
like a compassionate observer would. Send both Master symbols and any other
intuited symbols into that future scene of you fully having what you want. Allow Reiki

5
to bless and empower that “future you” who has/is/does what you want.

As the next step, draw Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen as a bridge over space and time
between you now and that “future you” you're about to become. Across this
bridge of Reiki (and you may be consciously or unconsciously aware of all the follow-
ing:), allow all the knowledge about the steps it took to get there and all the other
resources that caused you to get there to come to you across this Reiki bridge and

6
take them inside so that they are available to you now.

Expect with serenity to get what you want. Trust the Universe and be warned:
things often turn out much better when you trust, much better than you could have

7
imagined at the time.

Be prepared to recognise and notice when you've got what you wanted. Ask
yourself again: "How will I know when I've got it? What's important to me about
having/doing/being this?" This allows you to recognise every way in which what you
want manifests itself. Always give thanks to the Universe, yourself and Reiki for the
achievement of your goals.

"You deserve everything you choose to create." Madeleine.E. Bevan.

61
THREE STEPS TO BLISS

T he following is a meditation that I compiled, using elements from Za-Zen, Chi-

Kung and creative visualisation. I find it highly enjoyable and a great way to start
the day. You will need a quite space and 15 minutes of undisturbed time. Sit in a
relaxed upright position, on the floor or in a chair, with your back straight, your hands
in your lap, eyes closed.

1 Begin by simply witnessing your breath, in and out, and gently shift to abdominal
breathing, breathe into your tummy so that it expands as you inhale and goes flat
as you exhale. As your breathing naturally slows down, have the out-breaths take
slightly longer than the in-breaths.
Now count your out-breaths. Count from one to ten and then start again from one.
Do so three times round (a total of 30 out-breaths). While you’re counting, imagine
that you are on the shore of a beautiful ocean and that the waves come in and go out
again in the same rhythm of you breathing in and out. Allow your breathing to
become one with the ocean and continue to breathe around the world for a few

2
moments.

Now put a smile on your face and pay full attention to how smiling feels on your
face and inside your head. Keep on smiling and send these feelings from the
head down into your body, step by step, to the limbs, the organs etc. and imagine
that you smile to the parts of your body and that they smile back at you.
Allow a sense of gratitude to emerge and thank every part of your body as you
smile at each other, “Thank you, my eyes! (...) Thank you, my lungs! (...) Thank you,

3
my stomach!” etc.

Now focus on the full length of your Central Channel, from the Crown Chakra to
the Root Chakra, breathe in light and energy from your environment and on the
out-breath, send a beam of light from the Root Chakra into the heart of Mother Earth
like a tree would send its roots down into the ground.
Sense a supportive connection to the Heart of Mother Earth. Now send a beam of
light up to the sky, to the Moon, the Sun, the planets of our solar system, then to
remote solar systems and galaxies until your light has spread across the entire
Universe like the branches of a tree.
Sense the celestial energies enter your Crown and come into your heart. In your
heart the earthly and the celestial energies meet and merge. Now spread your arms
as if you were reaching out to embrace all beings and share this infinite flow of
energy from your heart and your hands with all beings of past, present and future.

Then slowly open your eyes, rest for a few minutes and go about your day.

APPENDIX B:

REIJU
(JAPANESE.: “TO GIVE SPIRIT”, “SPIRITUAL GIFT”)

I n most non-Western Reiki styles in Japan, the Reiju ritual is perceived to be the equivalent
of the attunement. Not all Reiki teachers agree with this view. Some say, the Reiju is
merely a blessing, not an initiatory transmission that creates a Reiki healer. For an example,
see the interview with Robert Jefford on www.ReikiCouncil.org.uk These Reiki Masters state
that the equivalent of the attunement is the Denju ritual (Jap. for initiation), which includes
the use of symbols. Hayashi used Reiki symbols and their kotodama during the initiation
ritual. This laid the foundation for the majority of Western attunement styles in use today.

The outline of the Reiju version shown below is for blessing purposes only. I advice you
not to perform this version of Reiju for the purpose of initiating or attuning someone to Reiki.
Reiju is used by teachers of non-Western Reiki styles in Japan such as the Usui Do and
Gendai Reiki Ho.

The recipient should sit in a chair, eyes closed and the hands in Gasshô (palms together,

1
fingers straight like praying hands in front of the heart).

Stand in front of the recipient, do Gasshô, bow once.

2 Move your arms out to the sides and stretch them high up with the palms facing the sky.

3
Connect to Reiki and feel its Light coming into you.

Lower your hands to above the recipient’s crown, palms horizontal, facing down, index
finer of both hands touching. Then in one continuous movement with your hands, draw a
line of energy down the midline of the body to the height of the recipient’s knees. Open your

4
arms to both sides, still moving down until your hands almost touch the floor.

Now stand up straight in front of the recipient. Put your hands on or above the recipient’s
head, one hand on top of the other, palms down. Let Reiki flow into the recipient’s head

5
for 10 seconds or more.

Move your hands to the sides of the recipient’s head, palms facing. Let Reiki flow into

6
the temples for 10 seconds or more. You choose whether to touch or not.

Move your palms in front of her/his face and make an upward triangle with your index fin-
gers and thumbs (symbol of the sun). Keep the centre of the triangle level with his/her

7
third eye. Let Reiki flow into his/her third eye for 10 seconds or more.

Move your hands down and hold her/his hands being held in Gasshô. Let Reiki flow into

8
his/her hands for 10 seconds or more.

Move your hands down until they almost touch the floor. Turn your palms upward and
join the little fingers side by side. Move your hands up along the midline of his/her body
as if you were scooping the energy and returning it to the sky. Then open your arms to the

9
sides and bring them down into Gasshô in front of your heart. Bow once.

Gently touch the recipient’s shoulder and tell her/him that the Reiju is completed.

69
APPENDIX C:

MOVING ENERGY
The following process has been crafted by blending Reiki techniques with ele-
ments of techniques used in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). Steps 1 to 4 are
the same as for the Reiki Psychic Surgery (page 49).

This technique can be used to support the healing of many kinds of issues; physi-
cal health problems, emotional charges, energy blockages, difficulties in managing
one’s life, money, career, relationships etc. as long as the issue can be felt in the
body. Do not use this technique to attempt to clear entities (see page 33 for
more details on entities).

1
(For the following process, the client can lie down, sit or stand.)

Ask the client to describe the issue they would like to have healed. Check that
they really want to let go and change.
Ask, “What will you gain from healing this?”
and “Have there been any benefits from not healing this yet?”

2
If yes, ask them to “think of other, healthy ways to get these benefits.”

Ask them to close their eyes and think of the issue. Ask, “If this problem was
somewhere in your body, where in your body would it be?” This is easy as
the client will usually feel tension or pain in an area of their body whenever they think
about the problem. If there is any difficulty in choosing an area, ask them to take a
guess with the idea that there is no wrong answer.

Now ask the client to imagine they are looking into the area they have chosen and
ask, “If this problem had a shape, what shape would it have?”
This shape will be the shape of the trapped energy that is causing or representing
the problem.
When dealing with a physical problem, it is important for the client to perceive the
shape as being (at least slightly) different from the shape of the organ or the body
part itself.

Continue by asking for the texture, temperature, weight, colour, sound etc.
(see page 46) so that the client develops a clear image of the block.
Any answer they give is OK and they don’t have to get all of the details. Location,

3
shape, size and colour will usually be sufficient for this technique.

Tell the client now to go inside and to ask the block directly what it is that he or
she needs to learn from it, to ask for the message it holds for them.
“What is the message from this block, which when you’ve got it, will allow you
to let go of it and to completely heal the issue of ...?”
Keep it light and encourage the client that there are no wrong answers. “Just if you
knew...” and “It’s OK to take a guess...”

70
Then ask the client to come up with ways to put this message into positive action and
to commit to carrying through.
In the case of

4
doubt stop here and proceed with a standard Reiki treatment.

Draw the Usui Master Symbol and the Power Symbol onto the palms of your
hands. Draw the Power Symbol down the front of your body. Ground yourself
and connect with Reiki in your usual way, concentrating on your hands. Feel the

5
Reiki energy building up in your hands.

Draw the Power Symbol over the block. Explain your intention to help move
the block out of the client’s body and into the Great Light or the Source (or to
another appropriate place that the client has chosen).

“What would be the best and most appropriate way for the block to leave your
body? Please define the route with two or three points:

• the location of the block:

• the exit:

• if appropriate and helpful, an intermediate step (interm.):”

Then rehearse this route from the block to the exit three to five times.

block©exit -Pause... block©exit -Pause... block©exit -Pause...etc.

6
Or: block©interm.©exit - Pause... block©interm.©exit - Pause...etc.

With a movement of your hands, guide the block along the route and out of the
client’s body into the Great Light or the Source (or to another place that the
client has chosen).

Then check: “Has the block gone? Completely gone?”

If not, acknowledge any change so far as a success and repeat step 6 until the block

7
has completely gone or has been replaced by a new, healthy energy.

Conclude the intervention with giving Reiki to the treated area for at least five
minutes. Draw the Usui Master symbol, the Tibetan Master symbol and the
Power symbol (and other symbols if you feel guided to) over the area to further seal

8
the treatment.

Draw the Lightning Bolt Symbol in the air between you and the client to break

9
the connections and to clear the space.

Continue with a standard Reiki treatment for the remainder of the session time.

71
APPENDIX D
BYOSEN
Some of the Reiki styles that have developed in Japan with little or no input from the West, use a
system for sensing imbalances in the body called “byosen”. Below are quoted extracts from Frank
Arjava Petter’s newsletters on the “byosen”. This newsletter is publically available from the
archive on Arjava’s website www.reikidharma.com You can subscribe to free newsletters on his site.

What is the byosen?

The byosen is the frequency that is emitted from a tense, injured or ill body part. But that is not all
there is to it. It is also the reaction of the body to the incoming Reiki energy. Resulting from that, an
experienced practitioner can estimate the time needed for a treatment and the time needed for the
recovery of the client.
All the above sounds a little negative, but the good news is that the byosen is (...) a sign of Life.
Our body is in a constant movement of finding its natural balance. (...)

The different processes in the body

The first step is to become aware of all the different processes in the body. You feel the energy
flowing through your hand and into your client. You probably feel the pulse of your client. You may be
aware of an energetic pulse of the body that you are touching. You may feel the movement of energy
in the body you are touching. You feel the temperature, the texture and the density of the body. And,
you may feel the byosen. Because of the multitude of the impressions, it is easier to feel the byosen
in someone else’s body. Because of that, it is easier to begin practicing with another. The easiest
way to practice is with a client who is unwell, because the byosen will be strong and tangible.

Levels of Byosen
The byosen has five levels, all of which you probably have experienced in your practice.
But you may not have been aware of the fact that there is a system to it. In general the fol-
lowing is universally true. But you may discover your own individual way of experiencing the
byosen. Let it teach you.

The five levels are:

1. Heat. This heat is above body temperature.

2. Strong heat. This heat makes your palms sweat
3. Tingling. The tingling can be experienced as pins and needles, as a magnetic
feeling or as your hands falling asleep / feeling numb.
4. Pulsation, cold. The pulsation can be strong or weak, slow or fast. When the
place you touch feels cold, it is not the fault of your hands, but a sign of
Byosen level 4.
5. Pain in the hand of the practitioner. This pain may be felt in the hand, in the fingers
or in the back of the hand. It may move up your hand into the forearm and may
continue all the way up to your shoulder. If that happens, don’t worry. Koyama
Sensei said that pain happens when positive Reiki Energy flows into a strongly
negatively charged body area. All that you need to do is to stay there until it goes
away. Change your hands if it becomes too uncomfortable or take them off for a
while. Then place them on the same spot again. Don’t be afraid to be contaminated
by “bad” energy. Reiki is a one-way street.

The byosen does not remain constant, but it moves in cycles. Usually these cycles come
and go in intervals of 10- 15 minutes. That means that you must stay in one position for a
long time, to be able to detect and watch the byosen.
(MK: Working with the byosen requires that you physically touch the client’s body. This
particular system does not apply to the “hands off” mode.)
