Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to not sext
Thesis: In this speech, I will persuade you to stop sexting, if you do.
Attention Step: Gain the attention of your audience

Introduction:
I. Attention: More than eight out of ten people are sexting
II. Relate topic to audience: In this speech, I will persuade you to stop sexting, if you do.
III. Credibility: I won’t lie, I have sexted before and it was a huge mistake. Freshman year of
high school, I sent a picture of my chest to a guy and it was posted on Instagram (elaborate in
speech).
IV. Preview: I will discuss the effects that sexting has on individuals and something called
“revenge porn”

I. Need Step: Create awareness of a problem and the need for change
A. Point What is integrity?/Preserve personal integrity.
1. Sub-point According to merriam-webster.com: Integrity is firm adherence to a code of
especially moral or artistic values
2. Sub-point Integrity is similar to what used to be called honor.
B. Point The importance of integrity
1. Sub-point Integrity is important in day-to-day life. It is applied to jobs and businesses
and even when you’re just hanging out with your friends.
2. Sub-point Trust, Responsible, Respect, Authentic behaviors are all important aspects of
integrity.
(transition) Now I will tell you a way to preserve your integrity, which is to not sext.

II. Satisfaction Step: Satisfy the need with a solution to the problem
A. Point casual sexting vs relationship sexting
1. Sub-point casual sexting can affect you in a bad way. When sending nudes to others,
kind of for fun, there is more of a chance that you will have a bad experience. Sexting in
a relationship has been proven to not really have a negative effect, but more of a neutral
one.
 2. Sub-point A 2015 Drexel University study reported that 88 percent of adults between the
ages of 18 to 82 sent or received a sext at some point in their lives.
B. Point “Revenge porn”/sextortion
1. Sub-point Similar to my story, many people will receive nudes from others and share it
with their friends, whether they are a female or male doesn’t matter.
2. Sub-point According to the 2018 analysis of studies published in JAMA Pediatrics, 12
percent of teens between the ages of 12 and 17 admitted to forwarding an intimate sext
they received to others without the consent of the original sender.

Action Step: Okay, so to wrap things up...

I. Summary: I just talked about integrity, casual sexting vs relationship sexting, and “revenge
porn” and sextortion.
II. Call for action: I believe that there should be less sexting. I know it won’t end, but I don’t
want anyone to ever go through what I had to experience from making the mistake of sending a
nude. Today, I’m just thankful my face wasn’t in the picture.
III. Closing: Sexting might seem like fun but you’ll regret in the long run.

1. Describe your audience demographics and explain how you have adapted your speech
for this audience.
My audience is made up of college students between the ages 18 and 30, so the research
provided in my sources above can apply to them as well.

2. Describe your audience interests and knowledge toward this topic and explain how you
have adapted your speech to their interest and knowledge level.
I do not know their personal interests, but I believe that they are quite knowledgeable on this
topic because of their age and what generation we all live in. We all have phones, the majority
have social media, and all are human, so I believe that at least six people in the audience will
have had a run in with sexting before, whether they sent or received.

3. Describe your audience psychological expectations (values, attitudes, and beliefs) toward
your topic and how you have adapted your speech based on your understanding of their
psychological expectations.
I only expect my audience to listen with open ears. I know people are going to have their own
opinions and values that they live by. I just want them to have a positive attitude when listening
to me give my speech on this weird topic. I have adapted my speech for my audience in the way
that I provide definitions, I provide similar age studies, and even a personal experience story of
my own.
