Abstract

In this teaching video demonstration and evaluation I apply the annotated lesson

plan that I created to a group of freshmen boys and girls. In the video demo I record

myself as I apply 10 minutes of my lesson plan to the class. In this lesson I use the 5-star

lesson plan with the strategies of SDAIE to create a well-rounded and effective lesson. In

the evaluation I am going to critically assess my application of the lesson plan as well as

its design. I will also be looking for use and understanding of key course concepts along

with EL designed instruction.

Evaluation

The Lesson

The lesson was designed for high school students in US History. This class is

usually taken in the student’s junior year of high school. The lesson plan followed the 5-

star lesson plan model that consist of a description, goals and objectives, learning and

teaching materials, procedure, and evaluation. I also incorporated strategies of SDAIE

such as, modeling, bridging, contextualization, re-presentation, schema building, and

metacognitive development. The lesson was designed with all students in mind and had

differentiation for EL students. This lesson was designed to cover two crisis of the cold

war, the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis. The lesson was also going to describe

how these crises shaped the war and society still today.

The lesson starts with a little review of previous information and is followed with

a pre-assessment of student’s knowledge on a provided hand out. We then go over the

answers together as a class to incorporate schema building into the lesson and I use the

answers as a connection to bridge into my next lesson of the day. I introduce the new

lesson and model how I want them to fill in the lecture outline. Then the lecture begins

and as I continue through the PowerPoint the students follow along as they complete the

lecture outline. The PowerPoint presentation adds contextualization to subject material by

pairing my lecture notes with pictures and visual aids. After the lecture notes the students

work in their groups and fill out a time line of important events during the cold war

including the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis. The time line is a graphic organizer

that helps students understand the succession of events and how one event lead to

another. Then the students had to also answer discussion questions and define new
vocabulary. Group collaboration is a good way to develop student metacognitive

understanding. The lesson ends with the class coming back together and each group

presents an event on the time line as well as answers one of the discussion questions. I

want the class to wrap up with student text re-presentation, its helps me get a feel for the

level of understanding each group achieved. I then finish class with a little recap of my

own.

Critique

My plan and Lesson were well designed however I feel that I did not execute the

plan to the best of my abilities. I could have used sheltered English and spoke more

clearly during the entire lesson. This would have allowed for better understanding across

the entire 1/3 plus model. It may have been a mixture of nerves along with lack of

experience that got the best of me. In my intro to the day’s lesson I feel that I had spent

too much time recapping the previous lesson. It would have been more beneficial to have

spent that time bridging the lesson to the pre assessment of the previous lesson. In my

lecturing I use the word nuclear bomb when I should have been saying atomic bomb and

I should have used definitions of words from the book and not my own explanations. I

need to create a lesson and lecture that are consistent with the textbook, which in return

will create a better opportunity for students to understand the textbook, the lectures, and

the learning activities. The bridging of the pre assessment to the lecture was not executed

as smoothly as planned. Bridging in this lesson plan would have allowed students to

smoothly transition from the previous lesson into the current one with in the bigger

picture of the Cold War. The PowerPoint could have been more interactive by adding

slide and text effects that would have kept students on pace with the lecture. I also did not
model enough and my expectations were not meet because I never provided a clear

example how the pre assessment and lecture outline should be completed. I need to

improve on many levels as a teacher but after this assignment I better understand what it

is I need to work on and after this course I know how to improve my some of my

weaknesses.

Reflection

There is a saying that “hind sight is 20/20”, which is true. Looking back and

analyzing a performance is a great way to expose yourself to your weaknesses and your

strengths. I played college football and we as a team spent countless hours watching film.

We would watch practice and game film of ourselves as well as game film of the other

teams. While we watched we were analyzing what we did wrong so we could improve

our mistakes and what we did right so we could repeat our successes. There is a saying on

the football field that applies to any performance that is filmed, “the eye in the sky never

lies.” The eye refers to the camera and the fact that it records actual events means that it

is always honest and you cannot escape the truth that it tells. This assignment gives us the

ability to rewind time and analyze our strengths and weaknesses as a teacher, which is

crucial to our professional development. Looking back on my demo I feel that my plan

was strong however I did not spend enough time and creativity preparing the material and

did only an average job of delivering the material with in the plan. I also did not execute

the strategies of SDAIE with enough emphasis. I had partial success with the SDAIE

methods but I understand that they have much more potential. The design of the lesson

was strong and a good structure for the lesson. If I would have prepared my material

better and practiced my delivery and timing prior to the lesson I would have had more
success. I also would use simplified English and a simplified lecture notes for a more

clear delivery of instruction. When it is all said and done, I have a lot to work on to be an

effective teacher. I am glad this assignment has provided a better understanding of what I

need to work on to achieve my goals as a teacher. The combination of the application of

course knowledge and experience practicing these new strategies, I am sure that my

teaching effectiveness will improve and that keeps me excited about the future.
