STRUCTURE QUESTIONS
1. Diagram 1 shows the inter-conversion of three states of matter, X, Y and Z of water

(a) What type of particle found in water? [1M]

Molecule

(b) Under the room temperature, at what temperature does ice change to water? [1M]
Oo C

(c) What is physical state labelled Z? [1M]

Gas/ gaseous
….……………………………………………………………………….
(d) Name the process when water changes from state X to state Y. [1M]
Melting point

(e) When water changes from state Y to state Z, state the changes in:
(i) the energy of particles.? [1M]

Increases//higher
Reject: High
(ii) The forces of attraction between the particles. [1M]
Weak/ strong to weak

1
(f) The smell of curry cooking in the kitchen spreads to the living room. Based on the Kinetic
Theory of matter, state the process involved. Explain your answer. [3M]
Particle move randomly. [accept: move freely]
Particle move from higher concentration region to lower concentration region.

2. Diagram 1.1 shows the symbols for atoms of elements X, Y and Z.

(a) (i) write the electron arrangement of atom Z. [1M]

2.7

(ii) What is the number of neutrons for atom Y? [1M]

28-14 = 14

(iii) what is the atomic mass of atom X? [1M]

24

Table 1 shows the number of proton, electrons and neutrons for W, X, Y and Z.

(i) State one observation in the gas jar after a few minutes. [1M].

Reddish brown gas form

(ii) Name the process that occurred in the gas jar.. [1M]

Diffusion

(iii) Name the type of particles that exist in bromine liquid. [1M]

Molecule

(iv) State the change of state of bromine that occurred in the gas jar. [1M]

Liquid to gas

(v) The change of state in (n) (iv) can occur at room temperature. Explain why.[1M]

2
Bromine has lower melting point

(vi) Explain the observation in this experiment based on the Theory Kinetic of
Matter.[3M]

When remove the cover, the bromine molecule diffuse upward. This is because
bromine gas consist of tiny discrete particle. This particles are constantly moving
randomly, causes the bromine gas diffuse upward.

3. Figure 1 shows the setup of the apparatus used in an experiment to determine the melting point
and freezing point of substance X

(a) Why is a water bath used to heat the substance X? [1M]

To ensure the heating is uniform/even

(b) Graph show the temperature against time when solid of substance X is heated.

(i) What is the meltin point of substance X? [1M]

3
70 oC

(ii) State the physical state of substance X at point M. [1M]

Solid and liquid

(iii) State the change of kinetic energy along the region AB. [1M]

Increases
(iv) Draw the arrangement of particles of substance X at 60 oC and 90 oC. [2M]

(v) Explain why the temperature remains contant from point B to point C. [2M]

Because the heat energy absorbed by the particle is used to overcome the
forces of attraction between the particle

(vi) A Substance Y has a meling point 150oC. predict whether the melting point
of
Y can be determined using water bath. Explain why. [2M]
No/cannot.
Because melting point of substance Y is higher than the boiling point of water //
the water bath couldn’t melt the substance Y
