‘STEEL SHEET WITH HOT DIP GALVANIZED ZINC ALLOY COATING AND
PROCESS TO PRODUCE IT
‘The invention relates to stool stip provided with a hot dip galvanized zine
‘alloy coating layer and to a process for hot dip galvanising a steel strip with a zinc
‘aly coating layer, in which the coating ofthe steep strip is caried out ina bath of
‘molten zine alloy.
‘A eferance herein to patent document or other matter which is given as prior
‘at isnot tobe taken as an admission that that document or mater was, in Australia,
known or that the information it contains was part ofthe common general knowiedge
as at the prioniy date of any ofthe cams.
To provide a steel strip with a zine coating is well known, espacialy for
‘eutorative and bulding applications. To get a thin layer of zinc ona steel stip in a
cheap way, itis normal practice to coat the stel stp by hat dip galvanizing, in which
the stip is moved through a bath of molten zinc, The molten zine adheres tothe
steel, and a the departure ofthe strip fom the bath in mast cases the surpus of zinc
Is removed from the sti to gt thin coating layer, usually using gas knives.
111s known inthe art to add certain chemical elements tothe bath 1 improve
‘he qual ofthe zinc coating andlor o improve the process of coating the steel stip,
{As elements ote aluminium and magnesium are chosen,
Europecn patent 0 694 520 mantons the use oft to 3.5 weight %& magnesium
land 05 to 1.5 % aluminium, together withthe addtio of slicon to a percentage of
(0.0010 to 0.0060 in weight 8, The sicon has been added in such a small quantity to
Imorove the qualty of the zinc coating, which had been found to comprise zones
where no zine had been present (bare spols). However, the only example in the
patent mentions a zinc coated steel in which the costing has the composiion 2.55
weight % magnesium, 0.93 weight % aluminium, 60 ppm siicon, rest zinc end
ineitable impurities.
{would therefore be desirable to provide atleast one ofthe following
2 Zine alloy coated ste! stip having improved properties and a method for
Producing the same;
‘a inc alloy coated ste! sp that is cheapest produce than the known coated
soe! strip withthe same or better properties;
