Directions: Fill in each part of the App Lesson with your own original ideas.

Please look at the

sample provided on the class website. Provide 3 to 4 apps/steps for students to complete along
with a creative title, helpful description, and relevant SC teaching standards.

• There must be one app per step.

• Android apps can be use as long as all included apps are from the same platform.
• Lessons must cohesively link together 3 to 4 apps going from one focus/step of the lesson
to another.
• Lessons may include direct instruction provided the lecture contents are explained.
• Lessons may utilize web browser apps like Chrome or Safari to access website-based
tools. Link to the website in the write-up and the web browser app in the iTunes web link
area.
• The final step in lessons must have students create a learning artifact from a creation-
based app (presentation, video, etc.) or screenshot of progress from a skill-based app
that students would submit to the teacher for assessment.

Title: Piecing it Together

Relevant SC Standards:

3.NSF.1 Develop an understanding of fractions (i.e., denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10) as

numbers. a. A fraction 1 𝑏 (called a unit fraction) is the quantity formed by one part
when a whole is partitioned into 𝑏 equal parts; b. A fraction 𝑎 𝑏 is the quantity formed by
𝑎 parts of size 1 𝑏 ; c. A fraction is a number that can be represented on a number line
based on counts of a unit fraction; d. A fraction can be represented using set, area, and
linear models.

3.NSF.2 Explain fraction equivalence (i.e., denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10) by

demonstrating an understanding that: a. two fractions are equal if they are the same
size, based on the same whole, or at the same point on a number line; b. fraction
equivalence can be represented using set, area, and linear models; c. whole numbers can
be written as fractions (e.g., 4 = 4 1 and 1 = 4 4 ); d. fractions with the same numerator
or same denominator can be compared by reasoning about their size based on the same
whole.

Description: This app lesson will develop third grade students’ knowledge on what a
fraction is and how to make a fraction.
Instructional Objective:

• Students will be able to identify and write a fraction based upon information
given
• Students will be able to identify a fraction on a number line
• Students will be able to determine equivalent fractions

Step 1 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will use the 3rd Grade Splash Math
app to become familiar with identifying a fraction when given a picture or scenario.

Step 2 Content-Based or Skill-Based App: Students will use the Khan Academy app to
watch a video on equivalent fractions on a number line. After watching this video, the
students will then work on practice problems based off the video they’ve watched. This
will also be student’s opportunity to practice any other fraction problems.

Step 3 Creation-Based (Learning Artifact) or Skill-Based App (Screenshot of

Progress): Students will use the Google app on their iPads to log onto Aleks to take a
fractions assessment. The students will then show teachers their result by sharing them
or the teacher will have access to view scores through Aleks.
