Emergency Diesel Generator

XKA - Emergency Diesel Generator
Undervoltage Condition:
The voltages of the 400V AC busbars are supervised by the plant DCS. Should the DCS sense an
under-voltage situation at a 400V AC switchgear, which lasts longer than 4 seconds, an under-voltage
change-over procedure is initiated. The time delay is required in order not to interfere with the
superordinate 11 kV HSBTS.
On loss of voltage from the feeding branch, provided that the under-voltage is not caused by a trip of the
400 V AC switchgear, a sub-loop control switches over to the stand-by feeder in case voltage is
available. This change-over, however, is with interruption and subjected to an under-voltage and re-
connection procedure.
The controllable feeders connected to the 400 V AC switchgear are subjected to this under- voltage
supervision by defining their individual supervision time and time delay for re-energizing on return of the
voltage for each individual DCS control module. So in case of an under-voltage condition the feeders are
automatically switched off and, if the voltage returns within the supervision time, they are re-energized in

groups according to the selected time delay for re-energizing.
Non controllable feeders remain energized. However, systems with substantial loads are designed so,
that on return of voltage they take on load only after an adjustable time, e.g. HVAC systems,
compressors e.t.c.
In case the DCS voltage and CB status supervision identifies that the associated standby feeder can
take over the load an under-voltage change-over to the stand-by feeder is initiated.
(see Chapter 8: DCS Change - Over for 400V AC Switchgear)

XKA - Emergency Diesel Generator
Application:
In case of loss of voltage in the auxiliary power supply system. During standstill, the emergency diesel
generator is kept in standby mode by preheating the cooling water of the diesel engine.
In case the DCS senses an under-voltage condition (< 80% UN) at the emergency switchgear 05BMA
(units 70/71/72) or 05BMB (units 80/81/82), and neither a switching over by the 11kV HSBTS nor an
under-voltage change-over to the stand-by supply at the 400V AC switchgear could re-establish healthy
voltage conditions within the preset time interval, the plant DCS starts the associated emergency diesel
generator set 05XKA70 and/or 05XKA80 to feed essential consumers for plant shutdown as well as
battery chargers and the diesel backed part of the HVAC / lighting installation.

XKA - Emergency Diesel Generator
Simultaneously the bus sectionalizer 05BMA00GS001 (05BMB00GS001) of the emergency switchgear
05BMA (05BMB) to the common switchgear 05BHA (05BHB) is opened via I&C undervoltage
monitoring, isolating the emergency switchgear.
In the same way the DCS of the GTs and the STs separates the emergency switchgear sections *BME
(GTs) and *BMG (STs) from their associated normal sections, *BFE and *BFG on occurrence of an
under-voltage condition.
After the EMDG start-up period, i.e. rated speed and rated voltage (UEMDG > 90% UN) of the diesel have
been attained, the EMDG control issues a signal to the DCS that the diesel is running.
The DCS then checks some pre-conditions, i.e. PGB-Pump at switchgear *70BF/MS* (*80BF/MS*) de-
energized and not tripped and all bus sectionalizers between the 400V AC normal and emergency
switchgear sections open, and issues the signal “DSL GEN CB RELEASE CMD ON” to the diesel
control cubicle.
Receiving this release the EMDG control connects the diesel generator to the associated, emergency
switchgear *05BMA* (*05BMB*) by closing the diesel generator CB 05XKA70GS001 (05XKA80 GS001).

Thus power supply is re-established to the essential loads connected to the emergency switchgear.
Non-controllable feeders remain energized and the previously switched off controllable feeders are re-
energized in groups.
Then the DCS connects all other emergency switchgear sections, which have undervoltage condition to
the emergency switchgear *05BMA* (*05BMB) with time steps of 5s delay.
With the emergency switchgear of the GTs and/or STs supplied from an EMDG the unit with under-
voltage condition can be shut down safely, with all the essential loads like oil pumps, battery chargers,
turning gear e.t.c. remaining in service.

XKA - Emergency Diesel Generator
Restoration of Normal Power Supply after Emergency Power Supply:
On return of healthy 11 kV voltage conditions at a unit, which is in emergency operation, i.e. the EMDG
is still supplying the essential loads of the emergency switchgear sections and the power supply to
switchgear *BBE* is re-established from the 400kV grid, the normal sections of the unit GTs (*BFE),
steam (*BFG) and common (*05BHA/B*) switchgear are now supplied from their associated LV
transformers, because the CBs in the incoming feeders remained in closed position during the under-
voltage condition.
Automatic Action:
The normal switching status of the emergency sections *BME* and *BMG* will automatically be restored
by DCS (T3000) by closing of the bus sectionalizers *BME00GS002* and *BMG00GS002 and opening
the respective tie feeders *BME00GS001 and *BMG00GS001.
Operator Action:

Shuweihat S3, AE1172, Copyright © Siemens AG 2012 / Siemens Power Academy - Energy Solutions
The normal switching status of the switchgear for HRSG (*BFB*), HVAC (*BFI/K*), common services
(*BFA/B) and water treatment (*BFC/D*) can be restored by the operator via DCS by switching the
following CBs:
closing *BFW01GT002 for *BFB, the tie feeders *BFB00GS099 remain opened
closing *BFW01/02GT002 for *BFA/B, the tie feeders *BFB00GS099* remain opened
closing *BFW03/04GT002 for *BFI/K, the tie feeders *BFK00GS099* remain opened
closing 05BHW01/02GT002 for 05BFC/D, the tie feeder 05BFD00GS099* remains opened

10 - 18
XKA - Emergency Diesel Generator
The operator can also restore the normal switching status of the switchgear for HRSG (*BFB*), HVAC
(*BFI/K*), common services (*BFA/B*) and water treatment (*BFC/D*) by closing via DCS the tie feeders
*BFB00GS099, *BFK00GS099*, 05BFD00GS099 and one of the both incoming feeders respectively.*

Locally at the EMDG control board the re-synchronizing procedure has to be started manually.
The EMDG control then adapts the EMDG to the voltage and frequency of the neighbouring switchgear
*05BHA* (*05BHB*) and closes the bus sectionalizer CB *05BMA00 GS001* (*05BMB00 GS001).
On successful synchronizing, after a pre-set time, the EMDG control automatically adapts the diesel
engine to no-load conditions, de-loads the diesel, opens the diesel generator CB *05XKA70 GS001*
(*05XKA80 GS001*) and after five minutes of cooling down shuts down the EMDG.

10 - 19
XKA - Emergency Diesel Generator
Diesel Test Runs:
No-Load Test Runs
No-load tests can be performed, which are, however, not recommended by the suppliers and shall
therefore be kept to a minimum!!
A no-load test of any of the EMDGs has to be started by the "START" signal at the local control panel.
Manual synchronization has to be pre-selected, so the diesel generator CB 05XKA70/80GS001 to the
associated switchgear remains open. The frequency and generated voltage readings have to be
checked.
After 5 minutes the operation of diesel has to be terminated by a "STOP" signal at the LCP.
It has to be noted that an operation of the diesel with 0 % load (no-load condition) is confined to
maximum one hour to avoid soothing of the diesel engine.

10 - 20
XKA - Emergency Diesel Generator
Emergency Diesel Test Run under Load in Parallel with the Grid:
(once a month for one hour with minimum a load of 30% rated power)
The load test run of the emergency diesel generator sets (EMDG) 05XKA70 and 05XKA80 is initiated
manually by pressing the "TEST" button at the EMDG local control panel (LCP).
The EMDG control then automatically starts the diesel and after the start-up period, i.e. rated speed and
rated voltage have been attained, the diesel generator is synchronized by the EMDG control to the
respective LV switchgear 05BMA or 05BMB via the diesel generator CB 05XKA70/80GS001.
After the CB is closed (check-back “ON” position is indicated) the EMDG control starts the loading of the
diesel generator set.
Basically automatic synchronization is pre-selected at the EMDG control, i.e. the synchronization and
closing of the emergency diesel generator CB is done automatically by the EMDG control system.
If the automatic synchronization is not successful, e.g. in case of a defect of the auto-synchronizing
device, the operator can also select manual synchronization.

Shuweihat S3, AE1172, Copyright © Siemens AG 2012 / Siemens Power Academy - Energy Solutions
In the manual synchronization mode the frequency of the generator has to be controlled via the "speed
adjusting switch" and the voltage of the generator has to be controlled via the "voltage adjusting switch"
by the operator at the LCP. When synchronism is reached, the closing of the diesel generator CB has
also to be performed manually.
The EMDG operation is stopped by pressing the "STOP" push button at the LCP, the output power is
automatically reduced and the associated generator CB switched off by the EMDG control. After the
check-back "OFF" position of the CB is indicated, the cooling- down-phase is started and the diesel set
is finally stopped.
