Case Study 1: New Computer Software System

1. There will be multiple elements that are going to be part of the learning architecture. The

first element would be text because that will be the basic need for the learners to read and

visualize. Having text in the presentation can be either just one word labeling or it could be a

paragraph describing what each icon/ button represents. Another element can be

animation/ graphic as many people I know are visual learners. A person like me would love

to sit in a class where there are movements/ pictures in the presentation. It always brings

more attention to the content and audience takes more interest when presentation is more

colorful and visual. Video can be another element where we can do a small slide show of a

video guiding the audience how to retrieve few icons and what happens if we click a

particular icon. The resources we will need are projector, laptop, dimmed lights,

microphone (since it’s 50-70 people per session), paper, pencils, pens, markers (in case

anyone wants to take notes or draw).

2. The best method of how content should be presented is by having a PowerPoint slide that

can contain video links, pictures, texts, graphics; basically, it would cover all the elements

we discussed earlier. We can breakdown the presentation into 3 major section. First one can

be the introduction where the software is introduced by talking about some history that

how it came into being and why do we think it’s best for our employees to utilize in our daily

work flow. Second section can be about the content and icons where we would dive in

deeply to discuss all the “how to” questions. Second section will take the longest of all. The

third section can be about review/ conclusions/ open ended questions.

3. There are many ways to assess how the learners will be tested. One way is to breakdown

audience into 3-4 big groups/teams and ask questions about the content. We can have them

come up to draw on the board or write the correct answer. Another way is to throw out

questions randomly to the audience and have them raise hands. Whoever answers the

questions gets a prize. We can also test their knowledge by giving out a quiz paper where

everyone will be tested on what they just learned in the presentation.

4. The assessment items will consist of criterion-referenced test such as multiple-choice

questions, open-ended questions, competition between multiple groups, etc.

5. The course manual would consist of the three bodies that we discussed earlier regarding

best method used to present the content. We can combine all the sections (introduction/

content/ conclusion) in a syllabus type form where audience can refer back to or write notes

along with presentation. Syllabus can be used as a guide where they can go back to recall

content.

6. Facilitator’s responsibilities would be to keep the audience attentive by setting a learning

tone during presentation. It’s best to have the audience engaged during the presentation.

For instance: have a “match the following” slide in the PowerPoint and ask the audience

which icon belongs to which description. Facilitator should also be mindful of providing

appropriate breaks during the session given it can be a long duration. Facilitator should be

energetic, attentive, and focused to maintain a classroom environment since his

responsibility is to make sure every employee gains knowledge from this session and is

ready to apply this knowledge once audience steps out of the classroom by the end of the

day.

7. Every employee should be eligible for this course since the prerequisites for the job was to

have extensive software/ technical experience. The reason why I say every employee is

eligible is because they have been already working on the previous software. This additional

training will even extend their knowledge horizon and would be able to apply it to their daily

work flow.
