My Take (Final)

12 November 2018

Dear Mother Earth,

I am sorry for being so ignorant and throwing trash yesterday on the street. I am sorry for

polluting your water by filling your ocean with plastic bottles. I am sorry for creating air

pollution when I hit the gas pedal to my car. But most importantly, I am sorry for disregarding all

the natural disasters that have been occurring and that are a cry for help from you. I am aware

that you warn us with a signal, but we, humans, are neglecting you.

Many believe that it is not their fault that the earth is getting destroyed and that it is

happening because of how the universe works, but, by the use of evidence, it can be proven that

because of human choices, the earth is getting crushed. Let me tell you Mother Earth how the

other day I was walking down the street. While listening to some music, I was analyzing my

surroundings. Yellow and orange trees everywhere. You could notice in what season we are, my

favorite: autumn. But then, I felt as if everything got ruined when I noticed a group of students

throwing their trash on the floor, knowing that there are trash-cans everywhere. I thought about

standing up for you Mother Earth, but I couldn't. I was afraid of their response towards my

caring for you. Since individuals have different opinions about this topic, I thought about the

controversies that could have been created if I defended you. What if they started a fight with

me? I do not think that I had the ability to defend myself when there were so many individuals.

For that reason, I stayed calm, picked up the trash, and throw it on the trash-can that was right

next to me.

Mother Earth, how sad it is that every time I go to the beach with my family there are

plastic bottles on the sand and the ocean. How sad it is that my little cousins and their friends

cannot play anymore and create sand castles, due to the pollution found in beaches. But more

importantly, how sad it is that multiple marine mammals, turtles, and other species on the oceans

are dying because of us, humans. Let me tell you a fact Mother Earth. Did you know that

according to Plastic Pollution, in an article called “When The Mermaids Cry: The Great Plastic

Tide,” it is exemplified that there are more than eight million tons of plastic found in the ocean

yearly. Impressive, right? As I said before, all those plastic bottles come from individuals that

leave their bottles behind and do not recycle them.

Pollution is not considered to be a cause of natural disasters, but, they are a result from it.

For example, earthquakes cause water, air, and ground pollution. And who’s blame is it?

Humans. According to an article named “6 Facts about Human-Caused Earthquakes,” by USGS

Science of Changing World, it is exemplified how when humans inject fluid to the ground, there

is a high chance of earthquakes happening. Some results from earthquakes include contamination

of water and destruction of buildings which leads to land pollution.

Mother Earth, I have a theory. I believe that all the hurricanes that have been occurring

demonstrate your tears. Volcanoes eruptions demonstrate your angriness towards humans. The

melting ice symbolizes how you are disappearing and how in some decades, I will not write to

you again as our existence might come to an end.

All the hurricanes that have been occurring in the past, leaving behind thousands of death

and destroying multiple cities, shows how miserable you feel. Mother Earth, I recognize your

signal. You want us to stop polluting your water, your air, your soil, etc. But, although it is

possible, it can be difficult to make a difference in the world. There are multiple organizations

that are trying to stop such problems, but it is not enough. It will never be enough. Not until all

humans get together and agree to stop throwing trash on water, burning trash, and utilizing

agricultural chemicals in their soil.

The melting of ice demonstrates your disappearance. Throughout time, the loss of ice

caps has been increasing and it can be proven with scientific evidence. Individuals have multiple

theories such as global warming increasing and making temperature rise which melts the ice

caps, leaving behind thousands of animals that rely on ice caps for survival. Mother Earth, while

you are forgetting us behind, you are also leaving your scars behind with the rise in sea level that

is being caused with the melting of ice caps. This catastrophe also leads us to more problems

including contamination of water, a decrease of wildlife population, and a negatively affect not

only on society but the economy.

Volcanoes eruptions show how frustrated and angry you are, Mother Earth. Each eruption

symbolizes a scream of “HELP!” from you. Although the effects from your sorrow are

negatively impacting the world, they could also impact it positively by opening the eyes of

individuals that do not believe your fear of being forgotten. Some impacts on the world include

an effect on land, water, and air. It affects them because the lava that comes from the eruption

destroys every organism and causes objects to set on fire.

We, humans, are destroying the earth. But how are we creating such a problem? It is

occurring because of how ignorant we became. Natural disasters have become a result of

problems such as more global warming. The fact that we are ignoring them, volcanoes eruptions,

melting ice, and all the hurricanes that have been happening for the past years are the causes of

such catastrophes. Mother Earth, as I told you from the beginning, I apologize for my mistakes

that are ruining you, we, humans, will take more care of you and I promise that soon or later, you

will notice a change.

Sincerely,

Nataly Abreu
