2.3 Performance

2.3.1 Soil Investigation Works

2.3.1.1 Exploratory Drilling

Access borehole will be sunk for exploratory purpose with insitu tests and undisturbed soil sampling.
The borehole diameter will be sufficiently large to allow the insertion of insitu test apparatus and
undisturbed soil sampler with minimum diameter of 75 mm (NX Size). The drilling will be carried out
by continuous coring. The boring will use pressurized water to loosen the soil for boring. Lithology will
be logged by a competent Geotechnical engineer for the description of soil type, consistency or
compactness, plasticity, colour, degree of cementation if any, and other features that are important
for foundation design.

Borehole will be stable from collapsing. When the borehole reach soil layer with high collapsing
potential, casing pipe will be provided to protect the borehole wall. In any case, the casing pipe
should not be deeper than the borehole and will be at 0.5m above the bottom of the borehole (except
during rock coring)

Figure 2-2 ASTM SPT Sampler

Standard penetration tests have been done following ASTM D 1586-97.

Test was carried out in each boring hole to obtain a measured of soil resistance to penetration of the
sampler. The purpose of performing this test is to determine relative density of coarse grain soil or
the consistency of fine grain, which reflect the soil supporting capacity. In the test process, a split
barrel sampler is lowered into the bottom of bore hole by drilled rods. The sampler then drives 45 cm
into a soil by 140 lbs free falling hammers over a height of 30 in. The automatic drop hammer device
is used to maintain free falling and constant height. For the test result, the first 15 cm penetration is
not taken in the analysis and considered to be a seating drive. Hence the number of blows to achieve
this 15 cm penetration is not including in the N SPT value. The total cumulative numbers of blow
count required to drive the sampler to the last 30 cm penetration is recorded as the N value. Soil
samples taken from SPT are stored in plastic bag for identification.

The hammer used for SPT testing and sampling is the automatic trip hammer with N70 energy ratio.

2.3.1.3 Undisturbed Sampling

Standards used : ASTM D 1587-97.
Sampling interval : according to request
Equipment used : thin wall sampler

In order to obtain undisturbed samples, a clean bore hole has been drilled to the desired sampling
depth. A set of sampler consist of a stainless steel tube attached to the sampler head lowered to the
bottom of the bore hole. The sampler is then pushed into the soil without rotation. After penetrating
into the soil for approximately 95 % of samples length, the thin wall tube is withdrawn from the
borehole. Both end of the tube are then sealed with paraffinwax immediately after the tube is
separated from the sampler head. Samples are then brought to the laboratory for testing.

2.3.1.4 Dutch Cone Penetration Test (DCPT/Sondir)

Standards used : ASTM D3441-94, SNI 03-2827-1992

The Cone Penetration Test (CPT), or often referred to as Dutch Cone Test or Sondir in Indonesia, is
used to determine the bearing capacity of the soil layer quickly. The equipment used is the biconus
or the friction-cone. The sounding equipment is pushed into the soil pneumatically. The cone will
determine conus resistance, while the sleeve will determine the friction resistance of the soil.
.
The test will be carried out from ground level. The Begeman type mechanical cone having a friction
jacket was used for the sounding. A pressure gauge was mounted in between the loading frame and
the pushing rod to show the cone resistance and shaft friction. The outer rods were pushed into the
required depth. There are two readings that is registered, cone penetration and total resistance. The
sounding is generally terminated when the maximum thrust capacity of the DCPT is reached.

2.3.1.5 Ground Water Level Observation

Ground water observation is carried out in each bore hole during the drilling works. The ground water
table was determining using Dip meter provided with sound sensors to produce an amplified audio
signal when the probe contacts a water surface. The ground water level is measured during morning
and afternoon

2.3.2 Laboratory Works

The laboratory soil test will be carried out on selected undisturbed sampling following the ASTM
standard, as below:

The site sits on Alor Formations (Tmpa).Alor Formation (Tmpa) which are lavas and breccia
intercalated tuf, consists of SAND, SILT, and GRAVEL.

4.2 Seismicity

Various seismic zoning maps of Indonesia have been published by the government and non
government agencies for design purposes. The maps are issued by Water Resurces Research and
Development Center (PUSAIR), Department of Public Works, and SNI-03-1726-2012.

Indonesia is undergoing transition from the seismic code of SNI-03-1726-2002 to SNI-03-1726-2012.

The SNI 2002 is based on UBC97 and has a considered maximum earthquake of 500 years. The
SNI 2012 is based on ASCE7 and has a considered maximum earthquake of 2500 years. The actual
seismic load acting on buildings will be compared considering the parameters of each hole.

4.2.1 Soil Profile for Seismic Purposes

For seismic purposes, both SNI-03-1726-2002 and SNI-03-1726-2012 has classified soil conditions
as 4 types namely Hard Rock (SA), Rock (SB), Hard Soil (SC), Medium Soil (SD), Soft Soil (SE) and
Special Soil (SF). This soil types is calculated from the upper 30 m of the soil stratum.

5 Analysis and Recommendation

5.1 General Recommendations

The soil at Alor site is dominated by SAND/SILT/GRAVEL, which are grey and gray, only a very thin
top soil at BH-02. The top soil is around 1 m thick. After that a dense to very dense layer of
SAND/SILT/GRAVEL with 20-50 NSPT value and insertion of medium SAND in BH-01 at 10-21 m
depth.

Shallow foundation may be feasible for light to medium structures. But heavy or important structures
may still use shallow piles. Around 27 – 32 m the piles will have a stable layer to sit on.

There are some liquifiable soil due to geological conditions and high earthquake potential, general
recommendation may be used:
1. Use piles on medium – heavy buildings to bypass the sand layer
2. Use slab-beam on ground floor of light buildings to prevent damage by differential settlement
3. Remove the soil strength of liquifiable soil during calculation of pile bearing capacity

5.2 Analysis Methods

The analysis methods used in the following chapters will be explained briefly here. The following
table shows a quick glance of the calculations done and their respective methods:

Table 5-1 Brief of Calculation Methods

Item Calculation Method
Bearing Capacity of Meyerhoff
Shallow Foundation
Ultimate Axial Capacity of API Method
Deep Foundation

5.3 Earthworks (Excavation)

Earthworks done on the project will mainly be pile cap excavations and backfill. As have described
above, the top soil of the whole project is cohesive soil which is not in very bad condition. Therefore
these recommendations may be applied:
REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Issued 20-JUN-18 Doc No : T3139-ALO-ENG-CVL-STU-0002 Rev.2 Page35of59

1. Stripping and cutting is required to remove topsoil, organic and deletrious material. These
materials may reduce the strength of bond between fill layer and structure. After removal of
the topsoil, the soil will not have erosion protection so the soil must be protected as not to be
soggy or eroded.
2. Excavations may be done in vertical for excavations not more than 1.5 m, while deper
excavations can be done with 45 degree angle and a berm (terracering) every 3 m of height.
3. It is recommended that structural fills be constructed as controlled, well-compacted
engineered fills. Existing soils from cut area are suitable for reuse as fill in low laying areas.
Laboratory testing should be performed on the fill material to determine the appropriate
moisture – density relationship of the fill being placed. Adjustments to the soil moisture by
wetting or drying should be made as needed during fill placement
4. There are several soils on site that may not be suitable for fill. Soils over 95% liquid limit or
over 65% plasticity index must be removed and not used for fill.
5. Erosion control is important as the site is mainly residual soil which is very sensitive to
changes in weather and moisture.
6. Sufficient drainage and protection must be made on the slope such as vertical perpendicular
drains and catchers
7. Do not make drainage on top of slopes as damaged drains may saturate the slope and
reduce strength

5.4 Shallow Foundation

To have a good performance, foundation of any structure must satisfy two independent design
criteria.
 It must an acceptable factor of safety against bearing type failure under a maximum design
load
 Settlements during the structure lifetime must not be a magnitude that will cause structural
damage, or impair the operational efficiency of the facility.

Selection of the foundation type to satisfy the criteria depends on the nature and magnitude of dead
and live loads, the base areas of the structure and the settlement tolerance. Where more than one
foundation type satisfies these criteria, the cost, scheduling, material availability and local practice
will influence the final selection of the type of foundation.
REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Issued 20-JUN-18 Doc No : T3139-ALO-ENG-CVL-STU-0002 Rev.2 Page36of59

As have been described on the previous chapters, the top soil is cohesive soil which is not very bad
but not stiff enough. Shallow foundation may be used but may not be sufficient for the loads required.
Nevertheless we calculate shallow foundation bearing and settlement.

5.4.1 Bearing Capacity

Bearing capacity of foundations will use the Meyerhoff method from NSPT corelation with bearing
capacity equations of:

Parameters for bearing capacity of shallow foundations is taken from the previous chapter for each
layer. A factor of safety of 3 is recommended for bearing capacity of shallow foundation.

These foundations will be checked for each borehole up to 10 m depth. The results are then
tabulated on graphs that is shown on the appendix.

The following figure shows the bearing capacity of shallow foundations on 1 m, 2m and 3 m depth
and 1x1, 2x2 and 3x3 m2 dimension.

5.4.2 Uplift Capacity

The uplift capacity may be determined by the weight of the foundation plus the weight of the soil
above the foundation. A factor of safety of 2 is recommended for uplift capacity of shallow foundation.
For site purposes the unit weight of the soil considered is 17.0 kN/m3.

5.5 Deep Foundation

5.5.1 Static Axial Compression and Tension Capacity

5.5.1.1 Spun Pile

Driven precast concrete spun pile is going to be used in case piled foundation is required. The report
analyzes 400 diameter precast piles. Driven pile is easy to install and can transfer working load to a
competent layer at deeper stratum, by by-passing the top medium stiff to stiff layer, resulting in very
small experienced settlement.

The ultimate soil bearing capacity in compression and tension of driven pile is calculated using API
RPA-WSD (2000) method based on the laboratory and field tests, by using the following formula :
REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Issued 20-JUN-18 Doc No : T3139-ALO-ENG-CVL-STU-0002 Rev.2 Page39of59

. .

Where:
Pult-comp = ultimate pile capacity in compression, kN
fs = unit skin friction to pile, kN/m2
= α.cu for cohesive soil
=ko.po.tan(ɸ), for cohesion less soil
α =adhesion factor

=0.50. -0.50for 1.0, according to API RP2A-WSD

ko = coefficient of lateral earth pressure

=1-sinɸ
cu =undrained shear strength, kN/m2
po = effective overburden vertical stress at depth under consideration, kN/m2
As = outside surface area of pile, m2
qp = unit end bearing capacity, kN/m2
=9. cu, for cohesive soil
=po.Nq, for cohesion less soil
Nq =dimensionless bearing capacity factor
Ap =cross section area of pile, m2

Skin friction and unit end bearing cannot be continuously increase as overburden increase. Limiting
values are set forth by API RPA-WSD in the following table:
REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Issued 20-JUN-18 Doc No : T3139-ALO-ENG-CVL-STU-0002 Rev.2 Page40of59

Table 5-2 Limiting Values of Pile Bearing Capacity (API RP2 WSD)

Limiting values for unit end bearing and skin friction will be extrapolated from the table. The limiting
end bearing values is linear and can be limited as 240 Nq.

The API method is essentially α and β method and can be used for offshore and onshore pile
capacity. The method also has limiting values for bearing capacity so the results will be conservative.

To aid the designer in designing a foundation, the graphs of pile depth vs allowable capacity for each
borehole point are provided in APPENDIX F Pile Bearing Capacity. The designer can select which
area point close to a particular structure so pile capacity can be obtained from the graph represented
by at borehole.

Tension capacity can be determined by multiplying the skin friction of the capacity with a factor of
0.65.

5.5.2 Allowable Capacity

5.5.2.1 Axial Compressive Capacity

To determine the allowable axial pile capacity in compression the equation should be used.

Where :
Pall-comp = allowable soil bearing capacity in compression, kN
Pull-comp =ultimate pile capacity, kN
Fsp =factor of safety end bearing,3
Fss =factor of safety skin friction,3

Refer to appendix for capacity of pile foundation.

On the issue of negative skin friction, the axial compressive capacity must be deducted with negative
skin friction of the upper part of the soil. But from the settlement calculation the settlement of the fill
most likely will only create a minimum amount of negative skin friction that is negligible.

5.5.2.2 Axial Tension Capacity

To determine the allowable axial pile capacity in compression the equation should be used.

Where :
Pall-tension = allowable soil bearing capacity in tension, kN
Pult-tension =ultimate pile capacity in tension, kN
Fs =factor of safety,3

Finally, the maximum allowable load both in compression and tension should be checked against the
allowable capacity of the pile material

5.5.3 Recommended Piling Depth

The following table shows the recommended piling depth and the allowable axial bearing capacity of
piles. The piling depth is recommended based on pile size, bearing layer location, presence of soft
intercalation, length of piling and bearing capacity calculation. These are recommendations based on
drivability primarily and must be recalculated.

5.5.4 Lateral Response

Lateral bearing capacity will be determined by allowable movements and pile maximum yield
moment therefore it may be needed to construct a lateral load – moment – deflection diagram. The
calculations below use the p-y method for the soil parameter and finite difference to find the reactions
of the pile-soil. The method used is the method developed by Lymon C. Reese; Larry A. Cooley and
N. Radhakrishnan U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Technical Report K-84-2. This method is an
adaptation of the COM624 computer program. Recommendations and work method is provided from
FHWA NHI-10 Drilled Shafts.
REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

The pile is treated as a beam-column with lateral soil support. The general behavior of the drilled
shaft under a combination of lateral and axial loading can be obtained by solving the following
differential equation (Hetenyi, 1946):

Figure 5-5 Model of Pile as Beam-Column

The soil resistance, p, in the firs equation is considered to be a function of the deflection, y, and thus
is a differential equation in terms of a single variable. The nonlinear relationship between the soil
resistance, p, and the deflection, y, is the p-y curve used to model the soil. In order to model a
nonlinear p-y curve, an equivalent linear secant modulus is assumed and the numerical solution
obtained by successive approximation and iteration until convergence as described below. The slope

In this report Esi = EPS50, k = ki. Pu is related to undrained shear strength and angle of friction.
During design phase the lateral pile capacity presented in this report should be checked against the
capacity of pile material to resist bending moment and shear stress. This can be done by checking
the interaction graph of axial load versus bending moment issued by the pile manufacturer.
Pile parameters that will be used for the calculations may be examined on the following table:

Soil parameters will use the soil parameters stated on the previous chapter at Error! Reference

of pile at free head or fixed head. The client has specified that lateral capacity be checked 15 mm
maximum pile deflection. Therefore, the allowable pile capacity will be determined by checking lateral
capacity at and taking the smallest value:
1. 15 mm max deflection free head
2. Crack moment free head

3. Crack moment fixed head

The deflection at fixed head is not checked because from our calculations the pile will crack first
before reaching maximum deflection. The following tables summarizes the lateral capacity of each
pile at each area. Length of Pile is per recommended length.

5.5.5 Pile Spacing

5.5.5.1 Axial Group Effects

Piles in groups should not be installed at center to center spacing less than 3 times the average pile
diameter unless dictated otherwise by pile size, site constraints, pile cap requirements, and
construction costs. The minimum center to center spacing of 3 diameters is recommended to
optimize nominal group resistance and to minimize pile installation problems associated with a center
to center pile spacing of 2.5 diameters (FHWA-NHI-16-009 2016).

5.5.5.2 Lateral Group Effects

For lateral loading, analyses based on (Fleming,2008) show that no reduction in lateral capacity due
to pile group effects is envisaged provided the pile spacing is 4.5 pile diameter or greater (center to
center). In case pile spacing is less than 4.5 pile diameter in a group, we recommend reduction factor
of 0.70 to analyze the lateral group capacity.

5.5.6 Pile Settlement

Pile settlement will be calculated using the Vesic Method (1977) for soil resting on sand. The
following formula will be used:

Where:
S = Total Elastic Settlement (m)
Ss = Axial Deformation of Single Pile (m)
Sp = Pile Tip Settlement (m)
Sps = Settlment because of distributed load along pile length (m)
Qp = Load to Pile Tip (tons)
Qs = Load to Pile Skin (tons)
L = Pile Length (m)
Ap = Pile Section (m2)
Ep = Pile Modulus of Elasticity (ton/m2)
α = Vesic Coefficient (distribution of skin friction) taken as 0.5 for parabolic
Cp = Empirical Coefficient (taken as 0.03 for dense sand, piled foundation) (Vesic,1977)
D = Pile Diameter (m)
qp = Pile unit tip bearing capacity
p = Pile circumeference
Es = Modulus Elasticity of Sol
νs = Soil Poisson Ration (Taken 0.3 for Sand)
Iws = Ifluence factor = 2 + 0.35 x Sqrt(L/D)

The following table shows the pile deformations in mm:

From the calculation above we can see that the pile settlement range from 30 – 50 mm. Most of the
pile settlement come from pile elastic deformation and only around 10 mm come from soil
deformation.

The following is a sample calculation to obtain pile settlement using the Vesic method:

5.5.7 Pile Driving

5.5.7.1 Driving Records

Probe piles should be installed first before any production pile. Observation on probe pile should be
performed at every area near the boring points to know the sufficient length of embedment, final
blows per 25 cm penetration, and total blows of each probe pile.
After driving the probe piles pile load tests on several piles at represented area should be carried out
to know pile behavior under loading and pile load capacity at certain short-term settlement.
Driving of working piles area performed after issuing pile driving criteria for piles at each represented
area. The following data shall be recorded in the pile driving record sheet.
1. General data including project name, job number, pile driving record, date and time of pile
driving commencement and completion , pile number, scructure name, ground surface
elevation and other.
2. Data of pile including pile identification number, pile diameter, pile length, pile tip elevation,
and others.
3. Data of hammers including total weigth of hammers ram weight, ram stroke, rate energy per
blow, hammer cushion.

We recommend that pile driving be performed from center to edge of the group to avoid or to limits
possible heaving. A continuous heave measurement for all the piles should be performed throughtout
the pile driving. Re-driving of piles should be done if heave exceeds 25.4 mm.

We recommend using pile shoes to improve drive-ability and also to provide protection at the pile tip.

5.5.7.2 Pile Driving Criteria

The pile driving acceptance criteria shoud be based on the following :
1. Drive the pile to target level as defined by the nearest boring logs or pile test result.
2. If the pile comes to refusal above target level, continue driving until a blow count of 100
blows/250 mm penetration or final set of 25 mm/10 blows. The pile is than required to be
driven for “final setting” in 2 times, without any reduction in the driving resistance. If the
resistance is not maintained at 25 mm/10 blows it is judged that the hard layer is thin and the
pile is liable to break through this layer. Therefore, the pile should be driven further to the
target level.

5.5.8 Cement Type Selection

Sulfate can be harmful on concrete and can cause solution of the concrete body and finally corrosion
to the rebar. To prevent this, concrete can be made with sulfate resisting cement or other additives.
To determine whether soil or water is harmful for concrete ACI 318 has given the following
guidelines:
Table 5-6 Requirements for Concrete Exposed To Sulfate-Containing Solutions

Result of chemical testing shows that Sulphate in soil varies from 87 to 342 ppm therefore the
Sulphate exposure is negligible and there is no special cement type specified for the site.

5.5.9 Corrosion

The primary concern for performing resistivity tests and chemical testing of soil is to provide data to
determine whether the soil is very corrosive or has a negligible corrosion rate. The test results are
also to be used to determine the protection type of the piles or other embedded structures.

There are many kind of factor that influence the corrosion in soil such as soil texture, moisture
content, resistivity, soluble ion content, pH, oxidation-reduction potential and the role of microbes.

The soil test evaluation refers to ANSI A: 21.5/ AWWA C: 105-77 with criteria of scoring as follows:

To calculate the corrosion severity of the top soil to embedded piles, pipes and other structures, the
ANSI method is used. Data were taken from chemical lab tests, field resistivity results and soil lab
tests. The following table shows the calculation of the corrosion potential of the top soil in each
borehole. (Several assumptions must be made and resistivity results will be interpolated to nearest
test).

5.5.10 Liquifection

Liquefaction analysis will be performed using the Youd et Idriss consensus method. The seismic data
required is the peak horizontal acceleration at ground surface or a max. This can be obtained quickly
from the standard used or from specifications. For this area the peak surface acceleration (PSA) is
0.504 g.

5.5.10.1 Youd et All Method

The Youd et All Method (2001) compares the Cyclic Stress Ratio (CSR) and Cyclic Resistance Ratio
(CRR) which are the seismic demand and geotechnical resistance of the soil respectively. The CSR
can be calculated using the following equation:

Where
amax = peak horizontal acceleration at ground surface
g = acceleration of gravity
= total and effective overburden stress
rd = stress reduction coefficient, defined as:
REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Issued 20-JUN-18 Doc No : T3139-ALO-ENG-CVL-STU-0002 Rev.2 Page57of59

Z = depth beneath ground surface (m)

While the CRR can be calculated using the following equation if using the SPT value:

(N1)60CS = corrected NSPT values to 60 energy ration and corrected for fines content, defined
as:

FC = fines content

NSPT corrections used are:

REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Issued 20-JUN-18 Doc No : T3139-ALO-ENG-CVL-STU-0002 Rev.2 Page58of59

The project uses automatic trip donut hammer, the energy ratio correction Ce = 1.0 The samplers
used are without liners therefore Cs = 1.2. The borehole diameter is around 75 mm therefore Cb =
1.0. The rod length and overburden pressure is calculated.
Therefore the (N1)60 for the project can be defined as: (N1)60= N x 1.2 x Cn x Cr

The safety factor against liquefaction can be determined by:

Where:
MSF = Magnitude Scaling Factor, because CRR and CSR equations were developed at an
earthquake magnitude of 7.5 if other magnitude earthquakes are used a scaling factor
must be used. Regular practice in Indonesia uses MSF = 1.0
Kσ = Correction for depth of layer, usually neglected as only shallow depths are
assessed
Kα = Correction for slopes, neglected as assumed in level soil.

Notes : as liquefaction will not happen without ground water then soil above groundwater will
automatically assumed to be SF = 2. The same thing is done on high fines soil.

Calculations may be examined in APPENDIX J. The following table shows the calculation for
liquifection susceptability:
REPORT OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Issued 20-JUN-18 Doc No : T3139-ALO-ENG-CVL-STU-0002 Rev.2 Page59of59

Table 5-9 Liquefaction Susceptible Area

BH-01 12-20 fine SAND 14 - 29 0.28 – 0.74
BH-02 4–6 Gravelly SAND 16 – 19 0.16 – 0.30

From the liquifection assessment, there are 2 locations that have a potential for liquifection to occur.
For BH-01 the liquifection occurs at a deeper depth, therefore will have little impact on the settlement
of shallow foundations, however for pile foundations, for eartquake loading we suggest to remove the
soil strength of 12 – 20 m from pile bearing calculations.

For BH-02 the liquifection occurs at a shallow depth. We recommend to use pile foundation for
medium-heavy buildings as to provide stable platform during liquifection. For light buildings we
suggest to use slab-beam for ground floor to provide resistance from differential settlement which
may occur during liquifection.
