Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method used in this study and include the discussion
of research design, locale of the study, respondents, data gathering tools and statistical
treatment of data as basis for interpretation.

Research Design

The study used the pretest-posttest control group design which involved the 35
Grade 7 students. The Neil Fleming’s Learning Style Inventory was conducted to
categorize the students learning style. Furthermore, a pre-test was administered, after
which the respondents were grouped, the control group was taught traditionally while
the experimental group was taught by supplying activities addressing their learning
styles. Lesson plans were made discussing the topic Measurement with the following
sub-topics: History of Measurements, Measuring Length, Weight/Mass, Volume, Time
and Temperature, post-test was administered. The result of the pre-test and post-test
were compared, analyze and interpreted to find out the significance difference between
the performance level of the two groups.

Locale of the Study

The study was conducted at Central Bicol State University of Agriculture –

Calabanga Laboratory High School.

The Calabanga Polytechnic College (CPC) began serving in 1965 as a national

secondary trade school for boys in the municipality of Calabanga, Camarines Sur. Its
state grant to operate as a school was provided under Republic Act. No. 4420 of June
19, 2965, with the school known as the Calabanga National School of Arts and Trades
(CNSAT).
The early instructional program of CNSAT was on building construction and
furniture as well as cabinet making that started with 111 students receiving technical
skills training and vocational instruction. A number of other courses were added in the
succeeding years. Cognizant of the occupational demands emerging with the changing
time, the CNSAT increased its curricular offerings that include two-year post-secondary
courses of instruction. The school grew rapidly with substantial increase of enrolment,
which necessitated more permanent buildings and facilities. The school then was
getting ready for a possible conversion into a college institution. Its vision of changing its
status into a college institution was realized when the school was converted into
Calabanga Polytechnic College by virtue of R.A. 7957.

In view of the emerging complexity and consequent educational challenges of the

world’s technological advancements and increasing economic interdependencies, the
CPC has undertaken certain institutional readjustment; and the passage of R.A.6292 on
December 18, 2000 has made CPC an integral part of the Camarines Sur State
Agricultural College, now Central Bicol State University of Agriculture as CBSUA
Calabanga Campus.

Respondents of the Study

Compose of 35 Grade 7 students from Central Bicol State University of

Agriculture – Calabanga Laboratory High School S/Y 2014-2015 will be the respondents
of the study. They divide the Grade 7 students into two groups, the control and
experimental group. The control group consists of 18 students and the experimental
group consists of 17 students.

Table 1 shows the distribution of the respondents of the study

Instrumentation

Self-develop questionnaire composed of 80 items will be used in the study.

Topics included were history of measurements, measuring length, weight/mass,
volume, time and temperature. The instrument was also pilot tested to the Grade 8
students of Central Bicol State University of Agriculture – Calabanga Laboratory High
School and Don Servillano Platon Memorial National High School. The items were
subjected to item analysis to determine the level of difficulty and discrimination indices.
Items which were found very difficult and very easy were discarded. There were 50
items retained and were utilized for the pre-test and post-test. Detailed result of the item
analysis is appended.

The researchers also made use of the Neil Fleming’s Learning Style Inventory.
Based on inventory score, the four learning styles were identified, the visual, the
auditory, the read/write and the kinesthetic. Obtained scores were checked and
matched based on the inventory scoring procedure.

A letter seeking permission was sent to the principal of the CBSUA-Calabanga

Laboratory High School to conduct the study to Grade 7 students. The Neil Fleming’s
Learning Style Inventory was conducted to categorize the students learning style.
Furthermore, a pre-test was administered, after which the respondents were grouped,
the control group was taught traditionally while the experimental group was taught by
supplying activities addressing their learning styles. Lesson plans were made
discussing the topic Measurement with the following sub-topics: History of
Measurements, Measuring Length, Weight/Mass, Volume, Time and Temperature, post-
test was administered. The result of the pre-test and post-test were compared, analyze
and interpreted to find out the significance difference between the performance level of
the two groups.

Statistical Tool

In order that the data gathered were treated statistically, the researchers made
used of the following statistical tools:

1. To answer the first problem, what is the profile of the Grade 7 students
according to their learning style?
Mode = the value that appears most often in a set of data.
2. To answer the second and third problem, what is the performance level of
the control and experimental group in pre-test and post-test?
The researchers used the software of Bermundo and Bermundo to
compute the performance level.
3. To answer the fourth problem, is there a significant difference in the
performance level of the control and experimental group in the pre-test
and post-test?
