Q1.

Write the derived units of the following

(a) speed (b) force
(c) work (d) pressure
(a)
m s-1 (b) kg m s-2 (c) kg m2 s-2 (d) kg m-1 s-2
Q2. What are the advantages of S.I. system over other system of units?
1) S.I. is a coherent system of units. In this system all the derived units can be obtained by multiplying or
dividing the fundamental units.
2) S.I. is closely related to CGS system.
3) S.I is a rational system of units. i.e This system uses only one unit for one physical quantity which is not so,
with the other system of units.
Q3. What do you mean by Backlash error? How it can be avoided
The space for the play of screw increases with the use or due to wear and tear, such that when the screw is
moved by rotating it in some direction, it slips in the nut and does not cover any linear distance for some rotation
of the screw head. The error due to this is known as backlash error.
It is avoided by turning the screw always in the same direction.
Q4. Name two units of length which are smaller than metre. How are these units
related to metre?
(1) centimetre = 10-2m. (2) millimetre = 10-3m.
Q5. What do you mean by a unit?
Unit is a standard quantity of the same kind with which a physical quantity is compared for measuring it.

Q1.
The M.K.S.A system stands for
• A)
metre, kilometre, second, area
• B)
metre, kilogram, steradian, ampere
• C)
metre, kilogram, second, ampere
• D)
metre, kelvin, second, ampere

The M.K.S.A system is a system of unit which gives units of fundamental units’ length, mass, time and current.

Q2.
Which of the following measures small length to highest accuracy?
• A)
metre scale
• B)
vernier callipers
• C)
screw gauge
• D)
none of the above

Screw gauge measures small length to high accuracy

Q3.
The pitch of a screwgauge refers to
• A)
the distance of one mm
• B)
the distance covered in one rotation
• C)
the distance covered in two rotations

The pitch of a screwgauge refers to the distance covered in one complete rotation
Q4.
The time period of a second's pendulum is
• A)
1s
• B)
1 min
• C)
12 h
• D)
2s

A second's pendulum is the clock at our homes. It takes 1 s to move from one extreme to the other extreme, so
its time period is 2 s.

Q5.
The least count of a metre rule is
• A)
0.1 cm
• B)
0.01 cm
• C)
1m
• D)
1 cm.

The value of one division on a metre scale is 0.1 cm.

Q6.
Draw a neat labelled diagram of a vernier callipers. Name its main parts and state their functions.

Q7.
A microscope has its main scale with 20 divisions in 1 cm and vernier scale with 25 divisions, the
length of which is equal to the length of 24 divisions of main scale. The least count of microscope
is:
• A)
0.01 cm
• B)
0.002 cm
• C)
0.001 cm
• D)
0.02 cm
25 × Vernier scale reading (VSD)= 24 × Main scale reading (MSD)
1 VSD = 0.96 MSD
Least count = 1 MSD −1 VSD= 0.04 MSD
1 MSD = cm
So least count = × 0.04 = 0.002 cm
