INTRODUCTION
Page 1
This document deals with the design of the superstructure having 35m span (Pier to Pier)
Concrete deck is considered to be connected with the top flange of main girders with
proper shear connectors so that they can act together as composite section.
End cross girders are provided at both the ends of main girders for the purpose of
providing sufficient strength there to be lifted by hydraulic jacks during the replacement of
bearings or any other purposes.
Intermediate Cross frames are considered in between two End Cross Girders at
reasonable spacing to restrain the compression flange of main girders during construction
phase when the composite action is yet to be generated.
MATERIAL:
Main Girder and End Cross Girders are welded plate girders built up with structural
steel of grade E410 B0 conforming to IS:2062-2011. Whereas in Intermediate Cross Frames
rolled steel section of grade E250 has been considered.
FASTENINGS:
All the connections between members and splices between two parts of member
components has been done by HSFG bolts of grade 8.8 conforming to IS: 4000-1992.
WELDS:
All welds shall be done following the relevant IS and AWS codes of reference.
For construction phase loading only six free standing girders have been modeled
without taking any contribution of intermediate cross frames. Girders have been assigned the
sectional properties of bare steel.
Page 2
For the purpose of permanent and transient loadings grillage models have been
prepared with main girders having the composite property for long term and short term
respectively. For proper grillage action deck slab is modeled by several beam members having
nearly 2m spacing. These elements have been assigned with contributory width and depth
same as the depth of deck slab.
Bending moments and Shear forces at salient points necessary for design have been
picked from STAAD output and used in design. Design has been done in Limit State method of
design as per IRC:24 – 2010.
