Essay 1: Literacy Narrative (100 Points)

Assignment Description:
For this assignment students will choose a piece of literature and explain how that work has
influenced their life. Students may choose from a book, song, poem, short story, video game, or
any other work of literature. Students will offer their audience an overview of this piece of
literature as well as give specific details about the work to explain how it has influenced them.

Since this is a personal essay, you are free to use the word “I,” as well as other personal language
markers, but beware of offering vague and overgeneralized examples when writing. Use specific
and personal examples to help express your thoughts and feelings. This essay should include a
clear thesis that clearly states a claim about your chosen work of literature.

For this Assignment students will follow the basic steps of the writing process for its completion.
Certain steps will be awarded with points towards the final point total of the assignment. Below
is the step by step process of completing this assignment.
Steps of Completion:
Step 1: Read: Language Awareness - Writing to Change the World, Mary Pipher pg. 82 – 85
Step 2: Complete Journal Assignment 3: Writing That Changed My World
Step 3: Begin drafting Essay 1
Step 4: Take completed draft (2 – 3 pgs.) and this prompt to Noel Studio for Revision
Consultation
Step 5: Revise Draft based on Consultant feedback and personal edits
Step 6: Place the following in your folder on due date:
- Original Draft with Consultant comments
- Copy of Record of Consultation (ROC - yellow paper received after consultation or copy
you received in email)
- Revised Final Paper
*The ROC and the Original Draft with Consultant Comments will count for 25 points of the final
100 points. Without these documents the highest amount of points your paper will receive is 75
points*
