Project Objective(s)

NCTE Houston 2018 - Strategies and Resources to Improve Student Learning

What impact will a presentation on the resources and strategies from the NCTE Houston 2018 event have on teacher motivation as measured by a online survey?

To help motivate other English teachers to use new strategies to improve student learning

Audience for Project (Who Participates/Who Benefits)

How Project Fits into Professional Goals and/or Department/School/District Needs

How Audience Satisfaction will be Assessed

The English Department for our LA region (English teachers from our Compton, Watts, and Hawthorne Center) The same teachers will benefit and their classes.

One of my professional goals is to step us a leader more often, so that eventually I can take on a leadership role. My English department holds monthly PLCs and would benefit from a professional development like this one. The same applies for the region and the rest of the teachers will be in attendance.

Audience satisfaction will be assessed with an online survey through Google Forms administered after the presentation.

Special Emphasis: Teacher Leader Model Standards and NBPTS Core Propositions

Directions:Identify at least one NBPTS and at least one Teacher Leader Model Standards that are the primary focus of your project. Explain how these standards will be incorporated.

Special Emphasis Focus

How Special Emphasis will be Incorporated

NBPTS Proposition 5: Teachers are Members of Professional Communities 1. Teachers Collaborate with Other Professionals to Improve School Effectiveness

TLM Domain 2: Accesses and Uses Research to Improve Practice and Student Learning A.) Assists colleagues in accessing and using research in order to select appropriate strategies to improve student learning.

These standards will be incorporated in the presentation and follow up survey. At the PLC we will have English teachers, Instructional coaches, and Assistant Principals. All these professionals will be there for my presentation and we can collaborate to help improve student learning at our school. Since I will be leading the professional development I will be assisting my colleagues in accessing new strategies to improve student learning.

Provide 1-2 sentence summary of your teacher leader project.

At our English PLC, I will be presenting strategies and resources that I learned as the representative from the LA region for the NCTE Houston 2018 event.

Summarize process for analyzing effectiveness of leadership role.

To analyze the effectiveness of my leadership role, I will be administering an online survey through Google Forms which will measure satisfaction of the presentation and motivation to apply the strategies in their own classrooms.

Section 4: Inquiry Research and Exploration

Research/Professional Learning (Identify two articles that have informed inquiry focus. Provide title, URL or citation, and statement of what was learned.)

MAKING SPACE:

Teacher collaboration has really helped specific schools in improving student learning. One principal stated that “Teacher collaboration is the highest leverage strategy for school improvement that we have.” It is also stated that collaboration is associated with higher performance levels.

The Value of Teacher Collaboration https://www.edvestors.org/wp-content/

In this article it is established that research-based learning has really become a way to rethink how to improve practice. The article defines research-based as “Staff development that improves the learning of all students prepares educators to apply research to decision making.” This exactly what we will be exercising in my presentation. It will benefit the students because the teachers will be learning new strategies to try with them.

Research can Improve Practice https://learningforward.org/docs/leadin

Colleagues (Summarize how two colleagues have addressed similar leadership roles OR the status of the issue at department/school/district level.)

I have one colleague who has taken it upon herself to step up as leader during our PLCs and she has us collaborate with the strategies that we know, she is addressing a leadership role that I will be trying out during my presentation.

Another colleague of mine has decided to work with leadership to introduce new professional developments. She has brought in a series of educators to introduce more professional development, and I hope to work with her to help prepare my presentation.

NBPTS Proposition 5: Teacher has not only been a member but as stepped up as a leader and taken on more responsibilities within the collaborative group. Teacher has also involved herself in school improvement efforts like collecting survey data for our yearly LCAP goals.

TLM Domain 2: Teacher has consulted with various research and has helped to inform colleagues of new and improved strategies that can help further our students’ success.

Teacher has generated an easy to access powerpoint presentation with information, strategies and tips to help our introvert/extrovert population succeed in everyday classroom activities and routines.

The powerpoint and its resources have been disseminated to other departments as an additional professional development tool, along with its resources. Teacher is also collaborating with instructional coaches in other schools to distribute amongst the district.

Mentor Feedback

Directions: The Mentor should Identify strengths and areas of improvement in each of the following areas.

Effectiveness of resources designed by Candidate, including presentation, notes, handouts, and other resources.

Strength: The presentation was thoughtfully planned and very well organized; everyone was given digital copies of the resources so they could adjust them to suit their particular needs.

Effectiveness of Candidate in teaching and coaching adults. (Refer to Adult Learning Principles in FOTIP Handbook [https://www.fotip.org/adult-learning-theory.ht ml].

Strength: The teachers really enjoyed that they were provided with multiple strategies and lesson ideas.

Improvement: Choose 1-2 strategies to model so teachers can walk away with a really solid understanding of how to implement them.

Value of topic for audience.

Strength: The topic covered something we don’t always keep in mind when planning lessons, but does have the potential to impact student engagement and success.

Improvement: Help the audience see the value even more by showing how it connects to our LCAP goals .

Overall delivery by Candidate of the professional development experience, including audience engagement, pacing, tone, and response to questions.

Strength: Starting the presentation off with the disposition quiz engaged the audience right away. Tone was perfect for the audience and it was clear that Jenn was knowledgeable about the topic based on her response to questions.

Improvement: Slow down the pacing a little bit and perhaps provide some opportunities for discussion within the presentation.

Analysis and Summary of Audience Assessment

Directions:Record assessment data into Assessment Data Table(see end of document). Include copies of assessment tool with submission. Include at least one graph in your summary.

I was able to present my Teacher Leader Project during our monthly PLC. There were four English Teachers in attendance from various OFL LA centers including: Compton, Hawthorne, and Watts. The four teachers that were there for my presentation are part of my district and teach some level of high school English. All four teachers were able to take the assessment, which was a Google Survey Form that I created. Overall, all four teachers were satisfied with the presentation and found it relevant and helpful to their own practice.

The survey asked a variety of questions ranging from their thoughts on the quality of the presentation to how motivated they felt to use the strategies discussed. One of the major takeaways my audience had was “understanding that there are two different types of learners” to address. All four teachers were satisfied with the logistics of the presentation including: the survey, lecture, tips and strategies, resources, and the Q&A.

lecture, tips and strategies, resources, and the Q&A. Although one teacher felt that a modeling of

Although one teacher felt that a modeling of one of the strategies could have added a bigger impact. Surprisingly, all four teachers found The Learning Menu to be the most helpful strategy and were motivated to use it in their own classrooms. Overall, I was pleased with the feedback I received from my colleagues on my presentation and I was excited to learn hat I have helped inform or motivate them in some way by providing them with strategies and resources. I look forward to the next time that I will present on another topic to my PLC.

Action Items (some may not be applicable)

For curriculum design, lesson planning, assessment planning

I will continue to collaborate with colleagues to collect and analyze data to create

effective lessons while and attending/leading future PLCs. I will continue to reach

a deeper level of understanding in the standards and planning instruction that is both meaningful and effective.

For classroom practice

N/A to TLP, but I will continue to improve my classroom practice through research and observation of my colleagues.

For teaching English learners, students with special needs, and students with other instructional challenges

N/A to TLP, but I will continue to discover new strategies and tips to help our EL and SPED population succeed. I will continue to collaborate with the different educational specialists that can help me accomodate my students and their needs.

I will continue to step out as a leader by presenting on new topics that can really

innovate our school improvement efforts. I will continue to collect survey data to reflect on my practice and improve my presentations.

For future professional development

For supporting

others/department/

school/district

I will continue to interact and advise other departments so that our lessons can

complement each other and the skills students develop can build off each other. I will continue to voice my concerns and ideas in school wide meetings as well as district planning meetings.

Other

I will continue to work on my communication with school leaders, colleagues, students, and their parents to help ensure accountability.

Other Notes and Comments

One of the ways that I would like to improve my presentations is by modeling for my audience how to execute the learning strategies. I would also like to research and present on topics that might not be so common to help push the standard on what areas to focus on in our planning and instruction.
