Some Moments with Momentum

Last Wednesday, October 24, 2018, we went as a class, to the Physics Laboratory
to investigate the factors affecting the momentum of an object and also to observe the relation
between impulse and momentum.
So, together with my groupmates, prior to the said activity, each and every one of
us were tasked to bring some materials that are needed in performing the said activity.
Specifically, those materials that we brought are the following: .50 m wooden plane, a shoe box,
5 boiled eggs, a piece of wood, a piece of foam, old newspaper, and a piece of Styrofoam.
Fortunately, our materials were complete as well as our group. Firstly, Ma’am Michelle
Bernardino gave some instructions regarding our activity, then, all groups were positioned on the
floor including us to perform and design the experimental set up/s. The activity was divided into
three parts: a.) Effect of Mass on Momentum and Distance Traveled b.) Effect of Speed on
Momentum and Distance Traveled c.) Impulse and Momentum. For us to accurately perform the
activity, there are procedures on each parts that we followed in order for us to complete the
activity with least errors. In connection to that, while performing the activity, of course, I will not
deny that at some point, the room was filled with noise, as each and every one us are conversing
about how to accurately and precisely perform the activity. There are times that we need to go to
the other group to observe what they are doing, and to borrow weights. Generally, we observed a
toy truck being released in an inclined wooden plane, then gradually, various weights were being
added. Then on the second part, same process but gradually books were being added for the
inclination to be steep and the toy truck will have more distance traveled. Another, was the third
part of the activity whereby we execute “ Impulse and Momentum” by dropping the boiled egg
in various materials ( tile, wood, etc.) from a height of 1.0 m, then we will observe what will
happen in the boiled egg if dropped in various materials with different properties.
All in all, we finished the activity on the allotted time that our teacher had given,
with different data and observations to be encoded in different tables. Hence, I think that this
activity enhanced our camaraderie as a group because we need to help each other to get the data
that we needed.
