Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Form 1

Observation Date: ______11.04.2019___

Observation Time: _One Hour Class Period_

Teacher Observed: _Mr. Abdullah_Karahan_

Subject/Grade Level: _ Mathhematics / Grade 10__

School Observed: ___Zanzibar Feza Schools - TANZANIA__

Observer: ___Melek DAGCI___

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS §111.4. Grade 2.b.)

The learning objective was not on written on the board but Mr. Karahan told the topic that he
was going to cover. The student-teacher was finishing their objective which was regarding “
Logarithmic Expressions & Equations ”. Students had to rewrite the exponential form of the
given equation with using logarithm and solve algebraic expressions on logarithm.

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

The student-teacher began the class reviewing the previous lesson with using open-ended
questions. Class reviewed the previous lesson and the teacher guide students to connect the
discussion with why we need logarithm, when to use it, and they finished up the open ended
questions with how . He wrote the most important points that students recover again from this
discussion on the white board as a note. Then with using demonstration technique he show
students how to rewrite the given equation with using logarithm. And they already get the main
concept from the discussion and demonstration. After he gave the students 10 minutes to solve
the written questions on the board individually, he went over it step-by step and required students
to participate. After they solved the warm-up students are divided into small groups within two
students( pair groups) and are required to do their work sheet. At this time, the teachers go
around to help out the students. They are given about 15 minutes to complete one assignment
and then they move to the next worksheet. When it’s almost time for the period to end, the
teacher tells the students are in and to put their worksheets inside their folder and then the two of
students collects the paper and give them to the teacher . They go back to their seats and wait for
the bell to ring.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

The teacher did not use much. He used effectively white board and colorful marker pens during
demonstration of the questions and showing answers of other questions.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc)

He combined the different instructional methods and strategies. Like at the beginning discussions
with students and he continued with demonstrations to show some important questions to
students to guide them to do their work sheets. And then last part of the lesson was mostly
cooperative because the students being busy with solving the worksheet papers in their groups.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

At the beginning the teacher used open-ended questions to assess the students previous
knowledge and to see are they able to connect the previous lesson with lesson of today.

And he used formative assessment with writing some questions on the board. The students
individually tried to solve the written questions and teacher walked around to check their
performance and he chose volunteer students to show on the board and he helped on the same
time the students who did not solve correctly.

6- What can you say about the teacher’s philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)

It's more teacher- students centered style. When I talked to the teacher believes the style is
almost traditional unless the open-ended questions are used to make students more active. And it
is a bit distractive for the students because they spent some time in groups and they can get off-
task easily.
7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

The classroom management was generally good and I believe students have strong
communication with the teacher. They were asking their questions and the teacher asking the
question to the other classmembers to see is there any one can help him and to take everyone's
attention to the questions rather than the teacher gives answer to questions directly. And also he
reminds that if anyone will solve the question on the board there will be given extra plus. And
sometimes he used jokes to relax his students and make more fun math lessons.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

Two of girls who were sitting on the behind were not concentrate to the class at the beginning
and then teacher said extra plus will be given to the volunteer students and who respond the
teacher's questions. After few minutes the teacher sent some questions to one of them and for
other one he asked to her can she be volunteer to solve the next coming questions. And they
successfully done.

For the students who confused little he helped them individually while volunteers are solving the
questions on the white board.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

The student-teacher would walk around the classroom when waiting for the students to finish
their warm-up. Most of his communication was verbal. Some were non-verbal, which was facial
or sometimes he used his pen knock the board and without voice he got the attention of the class.
Immediately after the students complete each questions then walk around and one of volunteers
explained the question they will see which answer is correct. And he would look around when he
was teaching or explaining to them.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

The class generally fine. They are relax to talked to the teacher. And for special students to be in
the group was so effective because the students influences each other, they ask their questions to
each other if they stuck and they learn from each other as well.
11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?

The main strategy to keep students engaged during lecture or modeling, is walking around the
classroom. This way students know that you want them to be on task and that you are keeping a
close eye on them. And for some activities he focused only with some students that made some
of other students bored. And he did not use any technological equipments. If he used it would be
much more high achievable lesson for all students. And on that time they can go more further on
learning.
There was no enrichment activities for gifted students. They and their group finished the
question very quick and the rest time they wait for others to finish their work.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

I really liked how he applied open ended questions to guide the students to connect the previous
knowledge with the new content. And giving extra plus to the participation.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

Giving extra plus is very good idea because students know if they will participate they will
improve their last grade for the lesson. It is motivating students to participate class. And also
walking between the groups and visiting, checking each groups to see any possible problem and
to guide them to cover this problem.
