HAPPINESS THE PURSUIT OF PLEASURE

People have different perception on how we can find happiness and pleasure. According to the
Principle of Utility, the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain are the only principle that
should be used in assessing an action’s morality. The Principle of the Greatest Number, on the
other hand, considers not only just the individual pleasure but also, the pleasure of the greatest
number affected by the consequence of our actions. In my perspective, it is bounded by our
emotions that sometimes lead us to irrational thinking which results to the pain inflicted upon
receiving the consequence. We sometimes think that the puruit of pleasure is the pursuit of
happiness.
Humanity as a whole subjects happiness as their main purpose and objective in life in life. But
in the the pursuing of happiness, in reality, people assume that what makes them pleasurable is
their version happiness. We, people, made extraordinary ways to gratify our pleasure but we
were never particular of where to find real and absolute happiness. I think the road to happiness
will never be universal because each particular individual will create their own unique road to
seek for happiness. It is something one must work hard for and one must sacrifice for.
I remember when I was a young girl and I got my first Barbie doll. It kept me satisfied and
happy and satisfied for a long period of time. I brushed her hair, changed her clothes and I even
brought her with me when I took my bath so she can also took her bath. I admire it, cherished
it and took care of it not until my sister break her leg and hand. By the time I became part of
the teenager group, I got my first mobile phone. There was some kind od excitement on it
because of the fact that I finally a cellphone but unfortunately, the excitement didn’t especially
when cellphone companies started launching android phones with more exciting features. It
made me realized that every time I had the opportunity to satisfy my wants, the excitement
doesn’t end for a long period of time because I tend to want more things that want cannot
provide.
As we’ve become more and more used to finding what is pleasurable, we’ve become more used
to expecting it and we seek our gratification more immediately, becoming less and less satisfied
if we don’t get it. As what had mentioned above, people created extraordinary and universal
ways to gratify pleasure and such things were meeting what is pleasurable to the five aspects
of human being. First is gratifying our physical pleasure. Satisfying our biological need which
includes food, clothing, shelter, money and sex is the best example of achieving physical
pleasure. Praises and recognition from other people satisfies our social pleasure. Enough
acquisition of knowledge provide us mental pleasure. Peace of mind gratifies our psychological
pleasure. And lastly, blessings and graces from the Almighty Being fills our spiritual pleasure.
The end goal of happiness is absolute contentment in life. It is were you will not desire anything
in this world anymore. And you were contented of what the world provides you regardless its
quantity and quality. But such things were completely different from the label of human being
which was unending wants and desire in life. Reality check, people were never satisfied of
what the world can provide. They always seek for something more and when they achieve their
wants, they will then again desire for more of what they want. How ironic it can be? People
seek for happiness but the end goal of happiness is something people can never perceived. In
other words, happiness is the pursuit of pleasure regardless of its time frame as long as it
provides them pleasure over something, then people acknowledged that as a mere subject to
what is HAPPINESS.
