2. Terminology used for Ionizing Radiation Ordinance and other regulations
(12) Air kerma in free air (rate) (Ionizing Radiation Ordinance Articles 12 and 13, and item 4 of Article 18)
Kerma (Kinetic Energy Released per unit MAss) is the sum of the kinetic energies of all charged
particles (electrons or positive ions) created in a kilogram of a certain material by ionization when
uncharged ionized particles are irradiated by X-rays, gamma rays, or neutron rays. The unit of
measure for the charged particles is "joules per kilogram" and is also known as "gray." "Air kerma"
refers to the kerma when air is the substance to which uncharged ionizing particles are irradiated.
"Free air" is air in spaces not blocked by walls or other obstructions.
In this revision, "Irradiation dose (rate) (unit: coulombs per kilogram)" has been changed to "air kerma
in free air (rate)", which is used internationally.
-2
Both can be converted based on "1 gray = 2.94 x 10 coulombs per kilogram".

Supplementary information
-4
1 roentgen (R) = 2.58 x 10 coulombs per kilogram (C/kg)
-2
1 gray (Gy) = 2.94 × 10 coulombs per kilogram (C/kg)

Relationship between roentgen and gray

1Gy = 114.1 R
-3
1R = 8.76×10 Gy

Chapter 1 Purpose, Features, and Requirements
1.1 Purpose
This X-ray irradiator is mainly designed to emit X-rays for experiments involving cultured cells,
microorganisms, mice, rats, and other specimens. The tube voltage (35 to 160kV), tube current (1 to
30mA) and irradiation time or irradiation dose are set to emit X-rays.

1.2 Characteristics
(1) The sample stage is rotated in order to homogenize irradiation doses.
(2) Appropriate aging (warming-up) is automatically calculated according to the downtime of the system.
(3) Touch panel operation enables easy setting of conditions and X-ray irradiation.
(4) X-rays are irradiated and stopped not only manually, but also based on the set time or irradiation
dose.
(5) X-ray irradiation can be automatically shut off when the preset air kerma is reached. The probe
position and air kerma rate for the position of the object to be irradiated are measured for
automatically converting the air kerma for the position of the object to be irradiated.
(6) Even if a power outage occurs during X-ray irradiation, the system can resume irradiation after power
is restored.
(7) Irradiation conditions can be called from the presetting or history to enter the tube voltage, tube
current, filter type and irradiation time automatically.
(8) Irradiation conditions can be called from the presetting or history to enter the tube voltage, tube
current, filter type and irradiation time automatically. In this case, the filters are provided with interlock
so that X-rays are not emitted until the preset filter is attached.
(9) The door of the protective box is locked during X-ray irradiation by an interlock function. The system is
also designed so X-rays cannot be emitted when the door is open.
(10) The dose leaked outside does not exceed 1 μSv/h (at a position 5 cm from system surface).
(11) The cooler of the X-ray tube device uses air cooling for eliminating the need for any drainage
equipment.

1.3 Operating Environment Requirements

To ensure that the system operates safely and properly, be sure that the operating environment meets
the requirements below.
Be particularly careful to ensure proper ventilation if the system was not operated for an extended
period of time.

1.3.1 Power Supply Requirements

(1) Power supply voltage: AC220V±10%
(2) Number of phases: Single phase
(3) Frequency: 50/60 Hz
(4) Power capacity: 6kVA or more

1.3.2 Grounding

exceeding 100 Ω is required.

13 CX30000-Z001
1.3.3 Environment Requirements
To ensure that the system operates safely and properly, be sure that the operating environment
meets the requirements below. Be particularly careful to ensure proper ventilation if the system was
not operated for an extended period of time.
The cooler in this system uses air cooling and emits a maximum of 2kW of heat, and so be sure to
install in a well-ventilated location.
If the room temperature exceeds 35°C, the circulation liquid in the X-ray tube device will become
hot, and this could adversely affect the service life of the X-ray tube device. If the room temperature
exceeds 35°C, install air-conditioning equipment for keeping the room temperature at 35°C or below.

(1) Ambient temperature: From 5°C to 35°C

(2) Relative humidity: 35% to 80% (no condensation)
Using the system outside this range can cause the X-ray output to deviate from acceptable levels.

1.4 Safety
To ensure that the system operates correctly and safely, be sure to meet the requirements below.
(1) This system is not waterproof. Therefore, be sure to protect the system from exposure to water and
other liquids.
(2) This system is not explosion-proof. Therefore, do not use it in a combustible atmosphere.

The tip of the dosimeter probe can be damaged (cracked) even by a slight impact.
To prevent damage, you can use the probe with the protective cap supplied with the
dosimeter mounted on the tip of the probe.
However, if using as shown below with the filter types supplied with the system, dose
absorption by the protective cap can affect the dose. For this reason, use without the
protective cap in these situations.
・ Non-filter (effective energy: approx. 12 keV)
・ 1.0 mmAL (effective energy: approx. 37 keV)
・ 2.0 mmAL (effective energy: approx. 44 keV)

Filters where the protective cap can be mounted to the probe tip when using
・ 0.5 mmAL + +0.1 mm Cu (effective energy: approx. 53 keV)
・ 0.5 mmAL + +0.2 mm Cu (effective energy: approx. 62 keV)
・ 0.5 mmAL + +0.3 mm Cu (effective energy: approx. 67 keV)

Note
Do not move the probe after X-ray irradiation preparation has been completed. The preset
air kerma rate changes, and the irradiation object will not be irradiated by the correct air
kerma. If the probe is moved after X-ray irradiation preparation has been completed, you
must re-register the air kerma rate.

Appendix 2 Ozone Generated by X-rays

Reference

The ionization effect of X-rays changes some air in the irradiation chamber into ozone. When
this irradiator is set to X-ray conditions of 160kV, 5mA, no filter, and a distance of 600mm
between the focal point and table, the ozone concentration increases by approximately 0.06
ppm in the mouse cage mounted on the irradiator. Setting the distance between the focal point
and table to 250 mm in the X-ray conditions increases the concentration by approximately
0.085 ppm. The impact of ozone on humans and animals is described in detail below, and so
please exercise caution. When X-ray irradiation is complete, expel ozone from the irradiation
chamber by the fan inside the chamber. Normal atmospheric concentration is restored by
running the fan for about 3 minutes.

 Ozone (ozone: O3, molecular weight: 48.00, melting point: -193°C, boiling point: -111.9°C, specific
gravity: 1.614 g/cc)
Ozone is converted to oxygen in air by sunlight, or specifically, ultraviolet rays, and exists in
concentrations of approx. 0.05 ppm near seashores and 0.005 ppm in ordinary air. It exists in large
quantities in the so-called ozone layer starting at elevations of 30 km above ground. However, it is not
a healthy gas as is widely overstated, but is rather an irritant gas with a distinctive odor. If the
concentration of ozone in the atmosphere, for instance, is 0.6 ppm or higher (it frequently reaches this
level in Los Angeles), it is hazardous to your health. Consequently, the acute toxicity of ozone has
been studied in detail, and it has been determined that lung capacity of healthy adults diminishes by
20% due to irritation of breathing ozone in concentrations of up to 0.1 ppm for 2 hours, and if humans
and various animals breathe ozone at concentrations of 1 to 2 ppm for 1 to 2 hours, the mucus
membrane is severely irritated and the central nervous system is inhibited. Breathing ozone at this
concentration for only 2 hours causes thinking to become incoherent, and breathing for 6 hours
causes headaches, bronchitis and peribronchitis. The acute lethal concentration LC50 for rats is 2 to
8 ppm.
Because ozone possesses strong bactericidal properties, it is used for this purpose at meeting places
and food packaging factories. It is also sometimes used for sterilizing drinking water. However, it has
a distinctive odor and is an irritant that causes discomfort and is also toxic to the human body. It is
particularly harmful to organisms that are engaged in physical activity. It results in mortality in 6 hours
at a concentration of 1 ppm for rats and mice, and induces acute lethality by pulmonary edema at 10
ppm. Ozone poisoning must be treated with the same caution as phosgene (COC12), requiring
complete rest to prevent the onset of pulmonary edema. Ozone is produced by X-ray photography. It
tends to result in chronic ozone poisoning, and could cause nervousness, fatigue, frontal cortex
headache, and cardiomyopathy.
The minimum limit where the distinctive odor of ozone can be detected is 0.02 ppm or less, but as one
gets used to the smell, it becomes harder to detect with accuracy. For this reason, it would be
dangerous to rely on the sense of smell. As a result, the maximum concentration for work places has
3
been recently lowered from the long-standing 1 ppm level to 0.1 ppm (0.2 mg/m ). This is because
ozone is more toxic than is commonly thought and is approximately 10 times more toxic by weight
3
than chlorine at a concentration of 0.5 ppm (2 mg/m ).
