One of the most successful innovations to come out of the Black Forest.
And a cuckoo clock.

The difference is Gaggenau.

In the Black Forest, some things never change – others have
been evolving since 1683. Innovation has become a tradition
for us ever since our company was founded as a hammer
and nail works, along with unique design that is highly re-
garded the world over. Such as the ovens 400 series, shown
here with oven, Combi-steam oven and warming drawer
– a combination that unites cutting-edge technology and
premium materials with super ior design. Our appliances
have been constantly evolving since 1683. The only thing
that stays the same is that they just keep looking better
and better.

British Design Kitchen Designer

ESSENTIAL editor’s letter

Welcome to the July issue

Gosh, this really has been a jam-packed

month, with so much going on in the world of
kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. And yet it
is also the time of year that we’re beginning to
wind down to the summer holidays and look
forward longingly to a bit of alfresco
relaxation. With that in mind we have not
only dedicated a number of pages to outdoor

75 living, but we have collaborated with top

appliance manufacturer Miele to produce the
first issue of The Miele Magazine, with lots of

22
sumptuous summer recipes for you all to
enjoy. Here, inside eKBB not only are our
Style pages a visual treat of gloriously dreamy
vistas, but turn to page 68 for an inspirational
design story on a stunning London garden
that has been created with the same regard
to detail and planning as any top interior
scheme – with a dining area, living area (complete with outdoor wine
refrigeration!) and a play area for the children. You will never think of your
garden’s potential in the same way again. If this whets your appetite for
cooking in the great outdoors, turn to our Technology pages for a feature on
Cooking in the Open Air (p106). The concept of the British barbecue will
always be a popular choice for a speedy supper on a sunny day – but this
new generation of top end outdoor appliances mean there’s no longer any
kind of compromise when it comes to what you choose to serve your guests.

Turning to our lead kitchen features, starting with New York, New York
(p22), there is plenty to inspire. A theme that, to me, links our main stories
is optimising the use of space. Each owner, architect and designer has
broken up the available room into highly liveable zones – each different,
yet each serving the family that lives there perfectly and allowing them
to inject their own personality and style. These are not just off the peg
kitchens – they are lovingly created, working, breathing homes.
I hope our pages help you to turn your own dreams into reality.

Enjoy the issue.

the city that doesn’t sleep as the inspiration
for their bright and breezy new kitchen

A
lthough she lives in London, Rachael Renaud
admits to a longing to live in New York.
‘I fell in love with the city, and especially
those big warehouse-loft spaces in Soho with
their light and open feel,’ she says. ‘It might
seem mad to want to bring that home to
London, especially because we don’t live in an
apartment, but a tiny mews house. I thought
that introducing some of the elements of the
loft-look here might help make a small space look much larger.’
Rachael, a nurse currently studying for her PhD, and husband
Etienne, who works in finance, bought their one hundred year-old
mews house in west London to share with daughter, Bo, now
seven, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Crumble and Bleecker.
‘The previous owner had not finished the renovations and
everything was pretty minimal, so we decided to rip out all the
half-done work and start again,’ explains Rachael, who worked
with interior designers Turner & Pocock on the new plans.
Out came the lead pipes and dodgy electrics, as they set about
making the two-storey property into a two bedroom house with pretty
roof terrace. On the ground floor, it was a case of re-configuring
the space, converting the former garage into a sitting room and
removing internal walls to make the largest possible kitchen-
dining area. ‘Space is limited, but I love to cook and we wanted to
make it a relaxed room where we could invite friends,’ she says.
When it came to the kitchen, Rachael went to meet Design
Director Phillip Ozorio and designer Tugba Esen of Connaught
Kitchens. ‘When I said I wanted a New York Soho loft feel, they
got it straightaway,’ she smiles. While glossy all-white cabinetry
boosts the sense of light and space, the wide plank floor and steel
worktop add the warehouse-loft feel, accentuated by the choice of
simple white glazed brick-shaped tiles that clad the kitchen walls.
Used on the walls of the New York City subway stations in the
early twentieth century, they add instant retro impact.
Itching as she is to make another trip to her favourite city – New
York – is her kitchen at home the next best thing? ‘Actually, I feel
very lucky to be here,’ she says. ‘It really is a dream come true.’ eKBB

planned open-plan living space of this semi-detached,
five-storey Victorian home, it’s hard to imagine this
basement was once three small rooms. For Sam and
Robin Wemyss and their two children Poppy, six, and
Imogen, four, the cramped rooms simply didn’t work for
family life. Sam says, ‘I knew that going open-plan would solve
the problem. I suffered extreme kitchen-envy when I visited friends
with the open-plan ideal.’ Sam realised they had a huge task ahead of
them, knocking down supporting walls to transform the space. The
couple called on a local architect, Matthew Giles of Giles Pike, to help
them. ‘As this is a lower ground floor and we’re east facing, it was
really important to maximise the light. We were genuinely excited –
although quite nervous, as we’d never undertaken building work of
this scale,’ Sam explains. The couple enlisted the help of Nikki and
Caroline of Domum Interiors to complete the interior with soft
furnishings and Chief Designer Andrew Hall of bespoke, British
furniture maker Woodstock Furniture, to design the fitted furniture
throughout the scheme. ‘As this was our first experience of designing
and installing a bespoke kitchen, it helped enormously that Andrew
understood what we wanted and could offer plenty of suggestions
based on our limited brief.’ Chief Designer Andrew explains, ‘It was

MAKING IT
Kate and Allon Reich added a side
return extension to their Victorian
home, creating a kitchen filled
with individuality and character
PICTURES JAKE FITZJONES I WORDS AMELIA THORPE

EKBB July 2013 45

A
fter living in their four-storey Victorian terraced
home in north London for twelve years, gradually
refurbishing it room by room, it was time to tackle
the kitchen. A case of saving the best until last? ‘We
knew it was going to be the biggest and most
expensive part of the whole project, so we decided to
bide our time, to save up to make it as good as we
possibly could,’ says Kate Reich, who shares her
home with husband, Allon, and their children Noah,
now 17, Leo, 14, and Ruby, 10. And so, former textile designer-turned
specialist dyslexia tutor Kate and film producer Allon set to work. ‘So
many Victorian terraced houses have a redundant side alley at the rear,
and ours was no exception, so we’ve done a classic side return extension,’
explains Kate. ‘In effect, we turned our narrow rectangular kitchen into
a square which has made the most enormous difference to the feel of the
room.’ They also added tall sliding glass doors to the rear, and a sky light
in the extension, introducing much more natural light into the space.
‘Because the old kitchen was small and dark, all too often I’d find myself
cooking on my own, with the rest of the family elsewhere,’ continues Kate,
‘so I really wanted to achieve more of a sense of unity with the rest of the
ground floor and a large dining table where everyone could sit comfortably.’
Recommendations led Kate and Allon to kitchen designer Oliver
Peake. ‘We wanted a design that combined modern and traditional
looks, not sleek and empty but warm and inviting,’ she says. ‘Oliver
understood that immediately, creating a layout I would never have
thought of, and producing a design that feels modern but homely.’
Given her love of colour and textiles, (Kate manages to fit in
upholstery in her spare time), the room is dotted with her vibrant finds,
including cushions, chairs and vintage ceramics. ‘Before we built the
extension, I used to try to make the kitchen feel the centre of our home,
but it simply didn’t hold everyone in it,’ she says. ‘Now it really is the hub
of our family life, and a space with our own stamp on it.’ eKBB

I t may be quite a narrow room, but the secret to this kitchen’s success lies
in the fact that it doesn’t look – or feel – it. But it hasn’t always been like
this. As part of a project to update and refurbish their Georgian home, Jo
Clarke and husband Neil knew that this room presented particular
challenges. ‘Put simply, we needed to achieve more space,’ recalls Jo.
Situated on the ground floor of the four-storey house, the existing
kitchen layout was cramped, with the dining table far too close to the range cooker
for comfort, and the adjacent living space equally awkwardly arranged. Working
with architect Ian Hume of Totem Studios, Jo and Neil added floor to ceiling glass
doors to the rear, instantly flooding the room with natural light and creating a
more open feel. Then, it was to meet designer Emma Jordan of Holloways of
Ludlow Bespoke Kitchens & Joinery they went, following up a recommendation.

A truly successful kitchen design hinges on many choices all

coming together and working in harmony. The cabinets have
to look good against the wall covering, the flooring and the
work surfaces which have to serve their purpose admirably and
look stunning while involving as little upkeep as possible.
Then you have to consider what they will need to withstand –
the onslaught of hot pans, sharp knives and numerous gadgets.
From a design point of view, the work surface makes up a huge
proportion of the visible colour and texture in the room, and of course it
is also a considerable chunk of the budget. Prices range from a modest
£40 or so per linear metre for laminates, to £400 plus per linear metre
for real stone and chunky top-end timber and £550 plus for concrete.
Mix and match is a strong trend, so clever kitchen planners can combine
elements from either end of the scale, and those who are buying their
once-in-a-lifetime kitchen can go for the quality, longevity and low
maintenance of materials like granite, concrete or man-made stone. eKBB

steel five-burner barbecues with built-in sinks and added wine

medal for courtyard gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in
2009 and it’s easy to see why. The ‘Freshly Prepped’ garden,
shows just how suited outdoor spaces are to cooking –
particularly if fresh, home-grown produce is close to hand.
It’s important to consider what you want to achieve from trying
your hand at cooking outside. If you’re looking for something to
wow your guests (and a large number of them!) then the serious
and sturdy pieces of kit on page 106 may be best. Stainless steel,
instant-heat gas burners and plenty of wheels – remember it’s
important to position yourself centre stage for your outdoor debut!
Harry Peto, furniture and barbecue buyer at The Chelsea Gardener
insists, ‘think about wind direction when deciding on the position of
your barbecue and garden furniture as nobody enjoys being smoked
out. Also, make it easy for yourself to carry food in and out.’
If, like me, you’re a bit of a romantic and envision kneading your
own dough topped with chopped tomatoes, mozzarella and a sprig
of thyme before stone-baking into a delicious crispy pizza, then the
rustic pizza oven on the next page is the ideal option. Harry adds,
‘try growing herbs such as rosemary and oregano nearby, then

1 Gas vs charcoal - gas is much more user friendly,
cleaner and simply less hassle. There is no waiting time
as there is to heat up charcoal and you have much more
control with temperature so food is more likely to be
cooked properly. 2 Take care of your outdoor kitchen.
When not being used for prolonged periods of time

3 When it comes to installation, our Discovery Kitchen is

than a basic barbecue trolley. However, the large Ivis

INTERIOR DESIGNER
Bathroom
A sophisticated bathing space exudes serenity with
bespoke mirrored storage and refined, subtle styling
PHOTOS ANDREAS VON EINSIEDEL WORDS EMMA FOALE

L ocated in Regent’s Park, this five-bedroomed house has undergone a

complete refurbishment resulting in a stunning bathroom that combines
discreet storage with beautiful detailing. A challenging brief meant that the
team at Louise Jones Interiors needed to carefully consider how to incorporate
vast amounts of storage while ensuring a spacious and uncluttered feel. For the owner,
keeping all of the functional items out of sight was key, and so mirrored cabinetry was a
clever choice – creating the illusion of space and adding interest to an otherwise narrow
space. While providing a visual statement, it also serves a purpose to conceal a dressing
room, WC and shower from view – maintaining a minimalist look. A bespoke wall-hung
basin unit and classic roll top style bath with wall-mounted taps are statement pieces
that add to the refined feel. Adding a softness to the scheme, an upholstered ottoman
and cashmere floor-to-ceiling curtains dress the window area and work in harmony to
make it inviting space. With graceful styling, including a decorative Chinese stool, glass
perfume bottles and a pretty floral arrangement, this room is an ideal place to relax.

ESSENTIAL shower enclosures

U
tter the words ‘frameless panel’ or
‘walk-in shower’ and you’re likely to
be met with a misty-eyed murmuring
of how today’s 21st century shower
enclosure is a thing of serious beauty. It’s
not just architects and interior designers
that are caught in the grip of these slender
sheets of glass and smokey charcoal panels.
Any wannabe John Pawson or Kelly Hoppen
worth their Philippe Starck faucet is well aware of how these
erstwhile leaky white plastic boxes have been propelled into
designer-label lovelies in their own right. No longer simply a
humdrum piece of kit to stop our floors from flooding (although
this is still important) but great looking, great functioning
products that are topping the nation’s ‘dream bathroom’ wish list.
But before you splash out on a cavernous, streamlined
enclosure – big enough for two, three or even four – made from
sheer panes of sturdy, solid glass and almost invisible frames,
look carefully at the layout of your bathroom and how much
space you have. The type of enclosure you choose – thinking
about size, shape and type of door – will be determined by
bathroom dimensions and what else is in there.
Fear not, from postage-stamp-sized space to ballroom
proportions, there is an enclosure to fit. A huge choice of models
are specially designed to utilise corners and unused recesses,
made up of either clear expanses of geometric glass or sweeping
curved doors. If you have the space and fancy a spa-like
ambience, a walk-in or walk-through shower is typically quite
large and made up of a wet area and dry area for a luxurious
touch. Smaller spaces will suit a simple, unobtrusive wet room
panel attached to the floor, ceiling or wall with metal fixing bars.
For a true wet room set-up, look out for panels and enclosures
that can be fitted directly to a tiled floor (some manufacturers can
supply wet room conversion kits) or for a more cost-effective
route, try one of the new generation of super-slim trays which
maintain this slick, seamless vibe but with all the security of a tray
to contain splash and spray. If space isn’t an issue, hinged doors
are a popular choice as you need unrestricted access outside the
shower for the door to open outwards. A pivot door, is similar,
but the door pivots on an off-centre mechanism so you don’t
need quite as much room. Bi-fold doors are great for smaller
bathrooms as the door is hinged in the middle and so folds
inwardly. Another good space maximiser is the sliding door where
panels slide behind each other internally. A very large shower
enclosure can be created using a door with one or two smaller
panels either side, while a growing trend for bespoke designs
allows you to create a made-to-measure enclosure to fit around
existing fittings and awkward spaces. Such a tailormade service
comes at a premium but you’ll get exactly what you want.
Oozing with Italian design flair, Less is definitely more when it comes to enclosures, and

HOW TO CHOOSE A
Wooden
Bed
Either traditional or contemporary,
using wood always adds warmth
FEATURE JANE GRAINING

THINGS TO CONSIDER
The bed you choose will always be a key feature
in determining whether your bedroom looks
stylishly modern or classically traditional.
Wooden framed beds go back through the
centuries but many current headboard designs
are variations of the slatted pattern which
originated in the servant’s rooms of grand
houses. They have a pared-down simplicity
which fits into both country rustic and retro
contemporary settings. The antique styled bed
with softly curvaceous shapes of the French
chateau design bedsteads, by contrast, are
classically romantic, though some new ranges
have a fresher feel – classic French furniture
without the twiddly bits. Modern wooden beds
have a sophisticated, hard-edged appeal with
clean defining lines. Their bold geometric
proportions are often over emphasised and
then tempered with a headboard covered in
something soft and textural like leather or suede.

ABOVE 1 The Bosco bed by Ercol is based on a 1920s design with its exposed finger joints and softly
smooth curved edges which give it a very distinctive look. Made in solid oak complete with pre-
sprung wooden slats. L211xW149xH110cm, £895 for a standard double, Heal’s. 2 This Simply Pine
bed comes in three sizes and has an honest, straightforward style. Made in natural pine with a
soft waxed finish. L207xW148xH105cm, from £450 for a standard double, An Angel At My Table

Plain Wood - It’s All In the Grain

The colour and grain of a wood be it oak, beech, ash or ‘humble’ pine is core
to its beauty – and treatments like waxing and polishing enhance its natural
attractiveness. It’s worth checking that the timber used to make your wooden bed
was ethically sourced from naturally regenerative forests or has FSC approval.

ABOVE Drawing on mid-20th century design heritage, 1950s shapes are brought bang up-to-date for a
modern contemporary style in white oak. Shaped solid wooden legs and iconic criss-crossed spindles are
striking features. Chiltern bed, L204xW151xH110cm, from £750 for standard double, Ercol for John Lewis

EKBB July 2013 151

Pretty and painted
A painted bed has obvious advantages, the major one being it can be painted in a
colour which tones with the decoration scheme, and could of course, change to
accommodate a new and different scheme at any time. Painted furniture has a
modern mood to it, and works just as well in a period setting as a contemporary one.

ABOVE This classic white bed is from the Simply French range. The headboard is designed in the
classic ‘chapeau de gendarme’ shape. King size bed L217xW172xH125cm, £750, An Angel At My Table

Upholstered comfort
Antique styled beds with wooden frames which surround comfortably upholstered
headboards and bases create a romantic French Chateau style ambience. Bleached
or limed wood gives a soft, faded finish and a naturally aged look which enhances
the style of the bed and lightens the feel of any room, so as not to appear too heavy.

Contemporary cool
Strong, linear elegant shapes dominate contemporary wooden bed design which help to
emphasise a sense of space. Wooden beds can be made in solid wood or finished with a
wood veneer. As well as checking it is ethically sourced it’s also worth checking that any
lacquer finish is water-based (rather than solvent-based which can act as a pollutant.)

ABOVE The Cube Bed is a real statement piece. With its solid, unmilled reclaimed frame, it shows the
texture and grain of the wood off to full effect. In dark teak, L200xW145xH83cm, from £1506, Raft
