Greetings from the little Aussie! The
newest member of the mushroom
magazine team!
Winter is approaching, and its getting
colder. We love to see many great co-
stumes and dressups at the Goa parties
in the Summer, and we would love to
see you dressing up our winter! Lets
see more psychedelic, lets see more
colour and art! Let your hair down!
We want more energy, more fun, and
definitely more costumes and style! We
will have our camera ready!
So, what is the verdict for German or
English? Germany is where mushroom
magazine began, and where we used to
mainly distribute. This is now changing
and the distribution will be more inter-
national in future. On page 4 and 5 you
can read about the results of the survey.
About the half of the readers would
like to have a pure english mushroom.
Less then 20% preferring solely german
mushroom. So we are extending the
English component, but there will still be
the important stuff in German too!
For future mushrooms:

busy editing, translating, promoting,
advertising and working our arses off to
bring a new excitement to mushroom!
We are bringing you more interesting
reads, more djs, artists and partys,
a bigger variety of gifts and gadgets,
costumes and clothes, and as much of
the psychedelic trance scene we can find
to bring to you! So stay tuned for some
big changes, lots of colour and some
amazing parties!

Der Winter kommt bald und es wird
immer kälter. Wir haben sie genossen,
all die ganzen Partykostüme, die uns die
Festivals verschönert haben. Lasst uns
auch im Winter psychedelisch kleiden.
Wir wollen mehr Energie, mehr Spaß,
mehr Goakostüme, mehr Style, denn wir
werden unsere Kamera dabei haben!
So, was ist denn jetzt nun endlich das
Ergebnis unserer Englisch/Deutsch
Umfrage? Deutschland ist ja nun das
Land, in dem der mushroom begann
und wo wir auch die größte Verbreitung
haben. Das verändert sich von Monat
zu Monat, denn die Distribution wird
künftig mehr und mehr internationaler.
Auf Seite 4 und 5 liest Du über die
Ergebnisse unserer Umfrage. Nur so viel
vorweg: Etwa die Hälfte unserer Leser
möchten gerne einen rein englisches
Heft, weniger als 20% ausschliesslich
ein rein deutsches mushrom magazine.
Also wird es einen Kompromiss geben.
Wir erweitern künftig die englische
Komponente, werden aber immer
noch wichtige deutschsprachige und
bilinguale Inhalte haben.
Für zukünftige Hefte haben wir uns nun
viel vorgenommen. Wir arbeiten gerade
hart an neuen spannenden mushroom
Themen: Mehr DJs, Artists und Events,
mehr Schnick Schnack und Party
Gadgets, Trance Klamotten und und und.
Einfach mehr von allem was die Psyche-
delic Trance Szene zu bieten hat. Also sei
bereit für ein paar Veränderungen.

Do you speak English?
The new mushroom language concept
Cultural differences might be a fac-
tor but the biggest problem, that
causes trouble among the human
community, is a communica-
tive one. A language problem, to
be more precise. The fatal about
it: It can’t be solved by reasona-
ble discussion only, in which lan-
guage should that take place? Well,
in English which is the world lan-
guage! the one or the other might
reply now. But unfortunately not all
the people on this planet do really
speak this “world language”… Seen
in front this background, it has been
a tricky question when we asked
you about the linguistic future of
mushroom in our last issue.
L ABEL & ARTIST SPECIAL
The majority of 48% of our survey par-
ticipants decided for only English arti-
cles. While evaluating the data, it was
interesting to notice that there were also
lots of German native speakers who
voted so. In their comments they agreed
with their non-German speaking fellows:
On the one hand we are an internatio-
nal scene and therefore it is essential to
speak an international language as well.
And on the other hand, there is simply
more space for content in the articles if
they are written in one language only.
But still this does not obscure the fact
that mushroom has its roots in Germany
and is mainly spread in German-speaking
countries. And of course there are peo-
ple who do not speak English. But only
a minority of 17% voted for a pure Ger-
man magazine. 28% plead for a
bilingual solution- among them
also quite some non-German
native speakers who neverthe-
less understood the problem.
A linguistic distinction between
local and global content, which
addresses different audiences,
was regarded to be a sensible
compromise by many. And that‘s
the plan. Global content mainly
in english - local content mainly
in german.

As a natively English speaking person I
guess that I have a preference to having
mushroom in an English-only format,
however sometimes I like to sit there
and try and develop my German spea-
king skills by reading an article in English,
and looking at the same thing in Ger-
man! (Damo)
English works for everyone on the globe,
it‘s THE contact language, so the content
should be in English and cover internatio-
nal information. In this way everyone can
access it and at the same time, the con-
tent is not limited to a few lines. (Ano)
Go only English. It‘s better for everyone to
get more information in each magazine.

I like the idea of keeping the artist fea-
tures in English and the rest (local stuff!)

Since the mushroom is bilingual there is
nearly no information left. Hope it will
become better again if there is more

Mushroom Mag wants to be the organ

Sprichst Du Englisch?
Das neue mushroom Sprachkonzept
Kulturelle Unterschiede hin oder
her: Das vermutlich größte Problem,
welches das Zusammenleben der Men-
schen auf dieser Welt stört, ist ein
kommunikatives. Ein Sprachproblem,
um genau zu sein. Das fatale daran: Es
kann nicht einfach aus der Welt disku-
tiert werden, wie sollte dies denn auch
geschehen? In Englisch, das ist doch die
Weltsprache! mag nun der eine oder
die andere sagen. Nur leider spricht
keineswegs jeder diese „Weltspra-
che“... Ziemlich kniffelig war von daher
unsere Frage in der letzten Ausgabe,
wie wir im mushroom sprachtechnisch
weiter verfahren sollen.
Mit 48% hat sich die Mehrheit unserer
Umfrageteilnehmer für rein englischspra-
chige Artikel ausgesprochen. Interessant
war bei der Auswertung der Daten zu
sehen, dass unter denen, die diese Wahl
getroffen haben, auch sehr viele deutsche
Muttersprachler waren. In ihren Kommen-
taren kristallisierten sich folgende Gründe
heraus: Zum einen wurde immer wieder
die Internationalität unserer Szene und
vor diesem Hintergrund die Not-
wendigkeit einer internationa-
len Sprache betont. Zum ande-
ren wurde in vielen Fällen erkannt,
dass mehr Platz für Inhalt zur Verfügung

steht, wenn dieser nur in einer Sprache
verfasst ist.
Das täuscht natürlich nicht darüber hin-
weg, dass der mushroom im deutschspra-
chigen Raum seine Wurzeln und nach wie
vor seine größte Verbreitung hat und es
hier schlichtweg auch Menschen gibt, die
kein Englisch sprechen. Dennoch stimmte
mit 17% nur eine Minderheit für ein rein
deutschsprachiges Heft. 28% plädierten
dagegen für eine bilinguale Lösung-
darunter auch einige nicht-deutsche Mut-
tersprachler, die jedoch die beschriebene
Problematik dennoch verstehen. Eine
sprachliche Unterscheidung von lokalem
und internationalem Inhalt, der sich ja an
verschiedene Publika richtet, wurde von
vielen als vernünftiger Kompromiss aner-
kannt. Und in etwa so wird auch unsere
zukünftige Verfahrensweise
aussehen.

Is it possible to be too innovative?
For sure a tricky question, once
you start thinking about it. Concer-
ning a music genre that represents
innovation already in its name,
it seems like being innovative
became a tightrope act these days.
More and more Progressive Trance
producers push the borders of this
style further than before, and as a
result they deliver sounds that are
considered to be “Nu School” or
“Techno” by some or even “Mini-
mal” by others . Anyway, whoever
has been to a festival during the
past years will know that this pro-
cess frequently causes discussions
about the music at Trance parties!
Seen in front of this background, the
brothers Sirko and Stephan are true
tightrope act masters. Not really big
news actually, since these two dudes
are undoubtedly among the busi-
est protagonists of the Progressive
scene! Looking back on an impres-
sive amount of experience as DJs,
producers, label owners and promo-
ters, of course they watched the evo-
lution of the scene very carefully from
these positions during the past years.
This is what makes their project Sym-
phonix one of “The Usual Suspects”
when it comes to high-quality Pro-
gressive Trance.
Their third studio album, (which has
just been released), includes positive,
bouncy and deep Progressive Trance,
as advanced and modern as it can be
– but still not “too innovative”.
It is probably this ability that is
responsible for the worldwide popu-
larity of Symphonix: To be up-to-date
but also promoting the original Pro-
gressive Trance sound.
Symphonix work together in the stu-
dio to fine-tune all their tracks until
both of them are 100% satisfied.
The brothers frequently employed
their Virus TI as well as their Moog
Little Phatty for the recent album,
beside lots of plugins and virtual gear
of course. The results are presen-
ted live at Trancefusion, the official
“The Usual Suspects” release party at
Hamburg’s Edelfettwerk on Novem-
ber 13th. An event that is sure to
be a killer!

Riding on the flow
Since they teamed up in 2003, Goran
Toprek and Rastko Palikuca became
prime examples for the growing
strength and importance of the Ser-
bian dance music scene, for the Psy
Trance scene in particular. Repre-
senting a stimulating, melodic yet
simultaneously deep sound, their pro-
ject Alternative Control constantly
gained reputation among the interna-
tional Trance crowd. Just recently their

his musical career at young age,
first with learning piano. Later he

painting psychedelic? Which tech-
niques are used to give a work
this expression? And which role
do psychedelic drugs play in
this process? An interview with
Amanda Sage.
Before you grab brush, pen & co:
Do you have special ideas and
feelings?
It’s this passion that almost forces me
to paint. Like a well that is about to
burst! I used to love to create when
I was questioning the suffering of
the world. Now I imagine my work
being medicine for healing, under-
standing that Art is an amazing cata-
lyst for change, and instead of focu-
sing on the reflection of all the pain
in the world, I try and see beauty and
harmony. And by seeking it in myself
and sharing it with the world, I feel it
is the most authentic gift I can give. I
hope to inspire millions to appreciate
the uniqueness of this experience
called life and to awaken the creative
power within.
What does “psychedelic” or “visi-
onary” art mean particularly for

them one in
the same.
Psychedelic art is either some-
thing that was inspired by a psy-
chedelic experience, or is designed
to inspire, remind or enhance ‚rea-
lity‘ by viewing it. This art can even
induce a psychedelic experience
by merely viewing it. ‘Visionary’
describes something of an almost
prophetic/clairvoyant nature and
should not necessarily define a spe-
cific movement in art. It is the artist
sharing her/his subjective vision
mixed with a message for humanity.
When the expression of psychedelic
and visionary art blend... patterns,
language, metaphors and profound
experience come to the forefront
- expanding our perception and
understanding of reality.
So how do you put this principle
to practice? Are there any special
“calculations”, is there any special
planning you make to achieve this
personal formula of psychede-
lic art?
The primary goal that I have in cre-
ating is to be of service to what I am
doing. Ernst Fuchs words remind me to
‘listen to the painting’...releasing fear,
control and the rational mind switches
on autopilot and my feeling directs.
One can then open up the doors to the
akashic records, to the memory of all
that is... I believe you must be secure
in your medium; if your method of
expression is paint, be diligent in prac-
tice, know how the relationship bet-
ween light and dark, colour and form
work, creating harmonies and illusions.
Let us get to a practical exam-
ple, your painting “The Birth Of
Venus”. Can you describe the
birth of this work, the very first
moment it came to your mind?
I created this piece for collectors who
wanted a painting of mine. They had
no idea what they would be getting,

and I originally had no intention to
paint Venus... The feeling led me to
her. When I painted this I was in a
very empowered space, wanting to
push the boundaries of my skill and
expression.
Can you give us a short descrip-
tion of your further work steps
up to the completion? Tell us
about your intentions concerning
single elements of the work!
I paint generally in a version of the
Misch Technique taught by Ernst
Fuchs. I often begin with washes of
acrylic paint, painted very much as if
I were using watercolour, then I build
up the first layer of whites (light) eit-
her in acrylic, casein or self made
egg tempera. Then painting in layers
of oil, switching back to building up
the light with tempera. This painting
has about 9 layers of evolution. The
content in this piece is subtle, poin-
ting towards a feeling of ascension,
of awakening. The symbol of the egg
is a prominent form in my work. That
wherefrom everything is born, the
seed, the most reduced organic form.
A portal of infinite possibilities.
What is the connection of psyche-
delic arts and psychedelic drugs,
regarding the artist as well as the
audience who is watching it?
The psychedelic experience is com-
pletely individual. One can journey
into a piece of art on many levels, in
an enhanced state, deep communica-
tion is possible and should be care-
fully dealt with and honoured. All psy-
chedelic art need not be viewed while
in that state of awareness, as some
work is done to just get it out, and
some is meant for a deeper dialog with
the audience.
What was the biggest compliment
given to you as a painter?
That my paintings are reminiscent
of music! :)
Psychedelische und visionäre Male-

unbedingt das gleiche: Während
psychedelische Werke entweder
durch ein psychedelisches Erleb-
nis inspiriert wurden oder aber die
gewohnte Alltagsrealität in ähn-
licher Weise erweitern wollen, ist
„visionär“ für sie ein viel weiter
gesteckter Begriff, der ein geradezu
prophetisches Moment beinhaltet
und nicht unbedingt eine bestimmte
Stilrichtung der Kunst beschreibt.
Die Verbindung dieser beiden
Ansätze, sie ist es, die Malerei einen
ganz besonders tiefen Ausdruck
verleiht, der die Gesamtauffassung
der Realität verändern kann.
Amanda setzt diesen Ansatz auf ihre
ganz eigene Weise um: Sie arbei-
tet sehr stark intuitionsgeleitet, ist sich

aber aufgrund ihrer langjährigen Erfah-
rung ebenfalls über den hohen Wert
technischer Fertigkeiten bewusst, die
als Grundlage für die Umsetzung ihrer
Ideen dienen. Für das hier abgebildete
Werk, „Die Geburt der Venus“, verwen-
dete sie eine Form der Misch Technik,
die sie von ihrem Mentor Ernst Fuchs
erlernt hat. Insgesamt verfügt das Bild
über 9 verschiedene Farb- und Lichtebe-
nen, die nacheinander aufgetragen wur-
den. Auf diese Weise fügen sie sich inei-
nander aber durchdringen sich auch
immer wieder gegenseitig, wodurch ein
sehr subtiler, buchstäblich tiefgründiger
Eindruck entsteht. Und dies nicht nur in
gewissen erweiterten Bewusstseinszu-
ständen: Das Verhältnis von psychede-
lischer Kunst und psychedelischen Dro-
gen ist für die Künstlerin nämlich ambi-
valent. Während einige Werke gerade
im nüchternen Zustand einen besonders
psychedelischen Charakter besitzen, sind
andere für einen tiefgründigen Dialog
mit dem Betrachter ausgelegt, der von
gewissen Erweiterungszuständen begün-
stigt wird. Hier findet sich eine deutliche
Parallele zur Musik- es verwundert daher
nicht, dass es für Amanda ihr größtes
Kompliment war, als ihre Malerei mit
derselben verglichen wurde.

Although Boom required huge
amounts of energy and resources
in general, the festival still managed
to integrate many ecologic aspects
of sustainability into its concept in a
convincing way. On the one hand,
local natural resources like clay and
cane were used for the construc-
tions. On the other hand, the bam-
boo being used extensively this year
came only from woods that are moni-
tored under sustainable standards.
Also the principle of recycling was
taken very seriously, concerning the
re-usage of material for the construc-
tion of the festival as well as the dispo-
sal of waste that was produced during
the event. The concept of the sanitary
facilities was specially interesting and
successful.
Many visitors regarded the large
distance between the camping / par-
king area and the actual festival as a
serious problem. One hour of wal-
king, one-way only, was quite usual
and became a rather unpleasant expe-
rience under the hot summer sun of
Portugal. The promoters realized this
problem and already promised a solu-
tion for the next festival.
A piece of art: The Groovy Beach Fllor
In jenen Tagen im August wäre ich
beinahe drauf gegangen. An einer
Überdosis Spaß. Und ich war nicht
der einzige: Jene spontanen Wellen
von freudigem Jubel, die aus tau-
senden Kehlen über viele Kilometer
durch die warme Abendluft brande-
ten, stellen einen beindruckenden
Beweis hierfür dar. Ein wahr gewor-
denes, postmodernes, psychede-
lisches Märchen: Mit diesen Worten
lässt sich die Erfahrung der diesjäh-
rigen Boom wohl besser beschrei-
ben als mit der sonst üblichen
Bezeichnung Open Air Festival.
Denn das Ausmaß, die Eleganz und
Schönheit, in der sich die zeitgenös-
sische psychedelische Kultur an den
Ufern jenes Stausees im portugie-
sischen Hinterland präsentierte, ging
weit über das hinaus, was anson-
sten im Rahmen solcher Unterneh-
mungen üblich ist.
Auf faszinierende Weise ist es der
Boom gelungen, auch Aspekte psyche-
delischer und visionärer Kultur in ein
Festival zu integrieren, die nicht unmit-
telbar mit Musik, Tanz und dem dazu-
gehörigen Drumherum zusammenhän-
gen. Zwar hat die Veranstaltung diesen
Ansatz schon immer verfolgt- jedoch

Psy versus Techno
The music programme on Boom’s main
floor was appreciated by the visitors only
partially. This fact was illustrated on signs
made of paper and even on the back
of some people, where expressions of
annoyance like “Save the Psy Trance!”
or “Minimal is not Psy – Don’t fuck my
drop!” could be read during the daytime.
These statements represent an ongoing
development, namely a literally progres-
sive division. For the following reason:
Most of the artists, whose gigs caused
the reactions just described, are an inte-
gral part of our scene since many years
and enjoy quite some reputation in this
role. Or should one say: enjoyed reputati-
on? Their sound does not represent some
peripheral phenomenon but the musical
development of our scene. Seen in front
of this background, it is an interesting
fact that the promoters stated in their first
newsletter after Boom that they had boo-
ked some artists for the Dance Temple
who “were not playing adequate music
for a psychedelic dance floor”.
Das Musikprogramm des Boom Main-
floors wurde von den Besuchern nur teil-
weise wertgeschätzt. Illustriert wurde
dieser Sachverhalt auf Papptafeln und
den Rücken einiger Gäste. Dort waren
nämlich während des Tages Unmuts-
bekundungen wie „Save the Psy Tran-
ce!“ oder „Minimal is not Psy – Dont
fuck my drop!“ zu lesen. Hierin äußert
sich eine nach wie vor aktuelle Entwick-
lung, in der sich eine zunehmende Spal-
tung abzeichnet. Denn der Grund für
die besagten Reaktionen waren die Auf-
tritte einiger Künstler, die nicht erst seit
gestern Teil unserer Szene sind und hier
einen guten Namen genießen. Oder sollte
man sagen: genossen haben? Ihr Sound
repräsentiert keineswegs ein Randphäno-
men sondern die musikalische Entwick-
lung unserer Szene. Bezeichnend ist vor
diesem Hintergrund, dass die Veranstal-
ter in ihrem ersten Newsletter nach der
Boom einräumten, für den Dance Temple
einige Künstler gebucht zu haben, deren
Musik „nicht adäquat für einen Psychede-
lic Trance Floor“ gewesen seii.

The Drop Zone: intellectual input
ist in diesem Jahr definitiv ein Quan-
tensprung gelungen. So war allein die
Architektur der Drop Zone, eine Kom-
bination aus Theater und Vortragsbe-
reich mit angegliederter Kunstgalerie,
ein ästhetisches Meisterwerk. Das, was
es in den organischen Bambuswöl-
bungen der im Halbrund gehaltenen
Galerie zu sehen gab, entwickelte
sich insbesondere Nachts, bei ausge-
klügelter Beleuchtung, zu einer visu-
ellen Attraktion von sinnesbetörender
Schönheit. Das rustikale und gleich-
zeitig extrem stilvolle Ambiente dieses
Ortes, umspült von den Vibes des Festi-
vals- ich kann mir kaum einen besse-
ren Ort für die Ausstellung psychede-
lischer und visionärer Kunst vorstellen.
Doch neben den großen, augenschein-
lichen Dingen wie der durchweg atem-
berauenden Verschmelzung von Archi-
tektur und Dekoration, waren es auch
die zahlreichen Kleinigkeiten, die es zu
entdecken gab. So streifte regelmäßig
ein Rudel Dinosaurier von Urschreien
begleitet übers Gelände. Und an ver-
schiedenen Orten wurde eine myste-
riöse, über dem Boden
schwebende Person gesich-
tet, die mit ihrem Lap-
top Klänge aus fremden
Welten reproduzierte…
Neben all diesen Perfor-
mances, für die sich u.a.

Company verantwortlich
zeichnete, stellte aber auch
schlicht und einfach das
Publikum der Boom eine
echte Attraktion dar: Selten
habe ich so viele schöne

und charismatische Men-
schen aus allen Ecken der
Welt auf einem Fleck gesehen.
Obwohl die Boom bezüglich der für sie
erforderlichen Energie und Ressour-
cen einen gewaltigen Aufwand bedeu-
tete und sie in dieser Hinsicht keines-
wegs eine neutrale Nullnummer dar-
stellt, konnte das Festival doch sehr
überzeugend viele ökologische Aspekte
der Nachhaltigkeit in sein Konzept inte-
grieren. So wurden für die geschaffenen
Bauten einerseits lokale, natürliche Roh-
stoffe wie Lehm und Stroh verwendet.
Andererseits stammte der in diesem
Jahr sehr umfangreich eingesetzte Bam-
bus ausschließlich aus Wäldern, deren
Nachhaltigkeit überwacht wird. Und

val. For instance, the Healing was
made from 90% recycled materi-
als, the impressing Groovy Beach
construction from 80%. Considering
the mass of visitors, it seems almost
unbelievable that Boom managed to
come along with barley any chemi-
cal toilets. The organic toilets spread
throughout the whole venue make
a natural composting of human
wastes possible.
Beachtliche 86475 kg Material wur-

90% aus recyceltem Material, die
beindruckende Konstruktion des
Groovy Beach zu 80%. Bedenkt
man die Masse der Besucher,
erscheint es fast unglaublich, dass
die Boom fast vollständig ohne
Chemieklos auskam. Die eingesetz-
ten organischen Toiletten erlauben
ein natürliches Kompostieren und
somit ein natürliches Recycling der
menschlichen Abfälle.

Natürlich wird es nicht nur auf die-
