INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, road safety is one of a vital issue in the world. It is one of the greatest
public health issue. Commonly, every country in the world currently held such campaigns to
increase the awareness especially to students and kids. Millions lives are lost because of the
less awareness towards the road safety that brings to fatality such as road accidents. This
issue cannot be turned into a blind eye because it contributes to the rising of the statistic of
annual roads accidents. Apart from that, this issue also cannot be overlooked in order to
achieve the goals of sustainable development and growth. This issue concerns not only for
pedestrian and cyclist, but it concerns all type of road users.

Commonly, road safety can easily be defined as the safety of the road users. There are
rules and disciplines that should be followed in order to achieve the safety of the road users.
These rules and disciplines are compulsory to follow so that the risks of the road users are
decrease. In 2013, statistics reveal that in Asean country, Malaysia has the fourth highest
lives lost road accidents which in total of 6915. Meanwhile, in 2015 Batu Pahat had the
highest lives lost in accident which is 191 for the stated years. This proof that the awareness
of road safety is still low for people in Malaysia especially in Batu Pahat.

Apart from that, the road safety should not be taken lightly if the sustainable
development need to be achieved. This is because, a road accident can cause trauma or
physcologically affected. On the other words, road accidents can affect the country Gross
Domestic Product. As instant, road accidents victims may result in disability. Thus, this
disability may affect the victim’s financial sources and also affect the nations as well.
Therefore, road safety needs to be looked as a crucial problem that need to be solved.

In Traffic and Safety Engineering course of University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia,
students are required to accomplish a project based on road safety which named ‘Kids Safe’.
The objective of this programme is to increase the awareness of road safety among school
students. This program is a short seminar or activity that exposed the school students towards
the road safety. Apart from that, this program also focuses only on primary school students.
Thus, the type of road users for primary school is only pedestrians and cyclist. As in groups
only focusses on cyclist.
As for kids, cycling to school might looks fun. The kids can cycle to school with their
friends. But, the reality that they didn’t know is cycling to school might be risky and exposed
to danger. Cycling to school without adult’s supervision or without any safety measure, might
contribute to the increasing of road fatality statistics. According to Norlen. M, Wong.S,
Hizal.H, & Ilhamah.H (2011). An Overview of Road Traffics Injuries Among Children in
Malaysia and Its Implication On Road Traffic Injury Prevention Strategy (MRR 03/2011), at
least 10% from all deaths due to road traffic injuries are contributed by school children.

Next, Kids Safe programme also provide essential basic information for students that
cycle to school. As instant, school’s students were taught the first step before cycling which
is choosing the right size of bicycle. This matter might be overlooked by adults, but it is very
important in order to keep the safety of school’s student in a good condition. Moreover, basic
signages were taught to students so that they understand and aware what is the signage
around them during cycling to school. This basic information might help the school’s student
to keep aware with their surroundings.
