SECTION-1
INTRODUCTION
EnPower33 model UPS is a high technology product manufactured to be
used in industrial fields, business centers (offices), hospitals, schools,
computer and communication systems and in any other places where the hi-
tech devices are used. Besides being an on-line system it also provides a by-
pass system and contains all the protection measures.
As it is constructed with Double Conversion methodology, the system
feeds the loads with stable voltage (frequency and amplitude). In the case of
mains blackout or back to the normal mains, there is no transfer time in
question in an on-line structure.
With a view to provide stable operation of the load, responsive
microprocessor control mechanism is implemented in UPS design thus
ensuring quality output, especially needed for the devices sensitive to minor
voltage changes.
While the UPS is connected to a PC system by RS232, with compatible
software program all the functions of UPS can be monitored. By means of a
Modem, connecting to a remote device (UPS), the device related functions and
problems could be acquired in PC. Moreover, it is possible to make suitable
changes in the parameters of UPS from the connected PC.
The static by-pass unit of the UPS continuously keeps the mains as a
stand-by supply. In an overload case, UPS transfers the load to the mains to
protect itself from damage. As soon as the load conditions returns to the
normal, with static by-pass system the UPS starts to provide pre-defined,
stable frequency and voltage.
In an UPS fault case, the static by-pass unit behaves the same as it was
mentioned above and protects the load from energy interruption.
During the mains failure, UPS needs batteries to supply the load. Only
DC energy can be stored in a battery. So, to keep the batteries fully charged
with DC current and to produce AC by using this energy when a mains failure
occurs, the UPS system operates in double conversion method, as shown in
Figure 1.

EnPower33 USER MANUAL

Figure-1 UPS Block Structure

In EnPower33 model UPS, the 3-phase mains (AC voltage) is connected

to the UPS input and rectified to 405 VDC voltage by the rectifier unit. Battery
bank is connected to rectifier output. The DC bus bar voltage is applied to the
inverter input. In the inverter unit sinusoidal output is produced by Pulse Width
Modulation (PWM).
When the mains fail, the inverter starts feeding from the battery voltage.
The duration of feeding the load with the power drawn from battery is called
the autonomy time. The limit of this time depends on the battery capacity and
the size of the load.

1.1 RECTIFIER
A fully wave controlled 3-phase power electronics circuitry which
transforms mains’ AC voltage to DC voltage. The rectifier stage is made-up of
thyristor blocks (where in each thyristor block a pair of thyristors resides).
These thyristors are controlled by the triggers coming from rectifier control
board. The power-thyristors are mounted on heat-sinks and equipped with
snubber circuitry to tackle against the peak voltage. While connected to load,
in order to remove the produced heat, fan is used for forceful cooling. By
limiting the input current, the device is not allowed to draw more than 1.5 In.
At the output of rectifier, the DC filter circuitry is used to filter the ripples
at the DC voltage. It consists of an iron core, two-end inductance and DC
capacitors. This keeps the ripple voltage expected at the output of the filter
below %1. The DC voltage at the filter output provides power to the battery
bank as well as to the inverter.
Main’s parameters are continuously monitored with the aid of
microprocessor unit. This unit perceives the phase sequence, phase out,
phase-voltage drop and distortion of phase angle of the main’s input voltage.
In case any fault occurs at the mains, the related led in the front panel lits up.

1.2 INVERTER
The output of the rectifier passed through dc filter constitutes a common
bus bar along with battery bank. The inverter unit converts DC voltage to
maximum possible harmonicless AC voltage and feeds the load at the output.
In modern power electronics circuits widely used Isolation Gate, Bipolar
Transistor (IGBT) blocks are used as power semi-conductor in this unit. In
order to protect the IGBT blocks (mounted on heat sinks) against the voltage
peaks snubber circuitry is used and the protection against over-current or short
circuit are performed by electronic tests. Cooling process is performed by
forced air-conditioning with fan. The inverter driver stage provides inverter
control signals as well as the protection against over-current and short circuit.
In order to reduce both the influence of the harmonics and noise level, the
inverter is run at 20kHz switching frequency.
All the IGBTs used are controlled by suitable driver units. By means of
power stage, establishing an interface to the low voltage electronic control
units, driver units maintains the relations between the two sides. In this way,
electronic control by power transistors are also physically decoupled (opto-
couple).
PWM voltages are produced at the half-bridge outputs only. This voltage
is passed through a low-pass filter consisted of capacitors.

1.3 FILTER
Located at the inverter output, this unit converts isolated PWM voltage to
sinusoidal form of AC voltage. Isolation is consisted of a transformer and
capacitors at the output. By filtering the input harmonic waves, this unit
produces isolated AC voltage with low distortion at the output.

1.4 STATIC BY-PASS

In case of any possible fault of UPS or if the load starts drawing over
power, this unit activates the load providing power from the mains. The unit
consists of two parallel & oppositely connected thyristors. The structure formed
with the block thyristors mounted on heat sink. In order to protect against peak
voltage, snubber circuit is used and forceful fanning is applied for removing the
excess heat. The power rating of the thyristors is chosen to be twice that of the
UPS. The transfer of load from inverter to mains and vice versa is constantly
supervised by the microprocessor control. In order to get rid of voltage
distortion during the transition, microprocessor ensures the synchronization of
UPS output frequency and phase with those of the mains.

EnPower33 USER MANUAL

1.5 MANUAL BYPASS

At the input output connection panel of the UPS, there is either a Manual
Bypass switch disconnector or circuit breaker. On the other hand another
circuit breaker or switch disconnector is assigned as the Static Bypass. In
normal operational condition manual bypass switch/chageover remains in Off
position while the static bypass as On. In case service is required then the
UPS should be disconnected from energy. Manual bypass circuit breaker/
switch disconnector and its safe operation is described in section 5.7

SECTION-3
UPS INSTALLATION
3.1 UNPACKING
Examine the UPS system carefully for any equipment damage that may
occur during the shipment. If you find any peculiarity with the equipment,
please contact your supplier without delay and make a claim on the shipper
and insurance company.

3.2 SITE SELECTION

a) The UPS system should be installed in a cool and dry place where the
temperature is maintained at required ambient temperature range.
There should be enough ventilation. If necessary, in order to provide
air circulation in the room, fanning system should be installed and
suitable air-filters should be used.
b) The floor on which the UPS is to be placed should be flat-leveled and
plastic coated.
c) The floor should be strong enough to sustain the weight of the UPS.
d) In the normal operating condition it is not necessary to do anything
with the backside of the UPS. Even then it is suggested to keep a
120cm air-gap so that if necessary the user can reach some parts of
the UPS. Enough places should be kept open around the UPS so that
a man can pass by it even when the front doors of the UPS are in
open.
e) The selected place should not be under direct sunlight and should be
far from any heat source.

3.3 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

In EnPower33 model UPS devices all the electrical connection cables
must be passed through the cable glands and connected to the appropriate
points on the input output panel.
For different types of EnPower33 model devices, there are three different
types of input-output panels.

CAUTION:
1. After completing the input, output and battery cable connections,
please do not turn On the battery circuit breaker / switch disconnector
before starting the UPS. The start/stop of the UPS and battery switch
disconnector’s safe turning On are described in section-5 of the User
Manual.
2. In normal condition the manual bypass cirucit breaker / switch
disconnector must be kept as Off. Please read section 5.7 of the User
Manual for safe operation of Manual bypass switch disconnector.

3.3.1 1st TYPE INPUT OUTPUT PANEL STRUCTURE

There are six thermic-magnetic circuit breakers over the input-output
connection panel. While seeing from the front, from left to the right these
automatic circuit breakers belong to the static bypass, input, manual bypass,
output, battery and fan. Below these circuit breakers there is are 11 bus bars
whose top parts are connected to the automatic circuit breakers and the
bottom parts must be connected to the input and output points of the
distribution panel. All the input, output, battery and grounding connections
must be done following Figure-6 sequentially to the points marked as N1, R, S,

Special care should be taken to the phase sequence during input
connections and to the polarity while making the battery connections. The
ground connection must be done.
While the device runs in Normal Mode, the manual bypass circuit breaker
must be kept OFF. In case service is required, the manual bypass should be
activated following proper instructions in seciton 5.7.
In case the fans are faulty at first the fan circuit breaker must be turned
Off. All the fans are connected in parallel. During normal operation, the fan
circuit breaker must be turned On. Otherwise overheat may cause serious
harm to the electronic components.

4.2 HOW TO USE THE MENUS

There are 5 main menus and a variety of sub-menus in the EnPower33
model devices. Before explaining the usage of the menus lets have a birds eye
view about the format of the information over graphic LCD panel.

In general there are 4 lines of information on the graphic panel. The

menu no. is displayed at the far left of the first line. These numbers represent
the main menu no. as well as sub-menu no. At the right side of this line real
time is displayed. In between these two information, there may appear different
symbols and images on different situations. These will be explained later on.
The second line represents main menu’s name while the third line
represents that of the sub-menu’s. The last line displays the information on the
properties belong to that sub-menu.

4.2.1 DISPLAYS MENU

The first menu of the UPS device is “DISPLAYS” menu. This menu is
used to observe the measured analog and digital UPS parameters. The sub-
menus of this main menu are shown in Table-2. In order to use this menu:
a) Keep on pressing either “Menu+” or “Menu-” key till the word
“DISPLAYS” appears in the second line of the LCD screen (this menu
also appears at the start of the device)
b) When you reach the main menu, by using either of the “Right” key or
“Left” key choose any one of the sub-menus. For example, in order to
access the first sub-menu, press “Right” key once.
c) If you have chosen the first menu as shown in the figure below, you
can see mains 3-phase R, S and T input voltages on the panel.
d) To access the next sub-menus press the “Right” key. When you reach
the last sub-menu, pressing the “Right” key once more will result in
reaching the beginning of the main menu.
e) If you press the “Left” key instead of the “Right” key then you can
access the previous sub-menus.

4.2.2 CALIBRATION MENU
This menu is used to calibrate the analog values measured by the UPS
device. The calibrable parameters are shown in Table-3. The following steps
show how to perform calibration.

a) In order to save any changes in this menu at first it is required to

enter correct user passwords from the “ENEL” menu. Even though
your password was incorrect, you will be able to change the values in
this main menu but will not be able to save them. To learn how to
change the password please read the section no. 4.2.5.
b) Reach the “CALIBRATION” menu by pressing “Menu+” or “Menu-“
key.
c) Use “Left” or “Right” key to select one of the submenus, which
includes the parameters that you want to calibrate. e.g. if you want to
calibrate input R phase voltage , select submenu 2-01.
d) Then you will see the display as above. Here, the 1st value represents
input R phase’s real voltage (218), the 2nd represents byte number
(172) of input R phase voltage that is to be read by microprocessor
and the 3rd value represents a coefficient value (162) which is defined
by programmer for input R phase voltage. If incorrect password was
entered then only the left parameter can be seen.
e) Measure input R phase voltage of UPS with a calibrated multi-meter.
For example, assume that you measured this voltage value as 220 V
and saw a different value on display as 218. Then you must calibrate

29 Rev EU1

218 V value to 220 V. When you press “Up” key, the 3rd (coefficient
value) and the 1st (input R phase voltage value) values will increase
on display. Continue this process until the 1st value reaches 220 V.
Press “ENTER” key and record this value to the memory, otherwise
you will pass to the next menu without recording this value.
If the voltage value measured with multi-meter is smaller (216 V for
example) than that of seen on the panel, press “Down” key
continuously until it reaches the value that you measured. Then press
“ENTER” key to record it.
f) If any other parameters are required to be changed, apply the same
procedures in order to adjust those.
g) During all these processes, the 2nd value will remain unchanged.

4.2.4 WARNINGS MENU

While the UPS runs the changes that occurs in its operating modes, the
problems and actions of the device regarding its power or the possible faults
occurred, are all recorded and displayed in this menu. You may encounter one
of the warnings in Table-5 during its operation in different conditions. The
microprocessor inside the device can record the last 63 warning messages of
the system in the un-erasable memory. In this way, UPS gives you the
opportunity to observe the last 63 messages, which were issued formerly. In
order to observe the issued warnings:
a) Use “Menu+” or “Menu-“ key to select ‘WARNINGS’ menu on the
graphic panel.

b) Press the “Left” key. On the panel there will appear something like the
following.

As described previously, 4-01 represents the first sub-menu of the

“WARNINGS” main menu. In this first sub-menu the last changes in
the UPS status can be found. For example, as seen in the above
display, the UPS had gone to Mains Low state lastly. As you press the
“Right” key you can see the previous changes (warnings).
c) In a similar way if you press the “Left” key you will be able to see the
next warning.
d) This is how you can surf through the menu and be able to learn the
last 63 warnings occurred during the operation of the UPS.
e) If the number of warnings becomes more than 63 then the first ones
are deleted. Thus you are able to see only the last 63 warnings.

4.2.5 ENEL MENU
This menu is formed to be used in various fabrication processes. The
submenus of this menu are shown in Table-6.
a) There are three user passwords in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd submenu.
These passwords are used to change some parameters of the device
in case the user requires. Before changing those parameters it is
necessary to enter correct passwords. If wrong passwords are
entered then although the user will be able to enter new values, the
values will not be saved.

Rev EU1 36
EnPower33 USER MANUAL

In order to change the passwords access this sub-menu. Adjust the

passwords to their correct values by pressing “Up” key and “Down”
key. Finally press the “ENTER” key to save those passwords.
b) 4th, 5th and 6th submenus include withstand times of the UPS at
110%, 130%, and 150% overload cases respectively. You can change
these periods in seconds by using “Up”, “Down” and “ENTER” keys
after you have entered the correct passwords.
c) 7th submenu is used to observe the overload at the output of the
device. If there occurs over 100% load at the output, in the
“WARNINGS” menu “Over Load” warning is issued. If the overload
increases more than 110%, the overload counter in this menu starts
to increase. As soon as this counter value reaches 5400 the device
passes to “Over Load Sd” mode and transfer the load to bypass after
switching Off the inverter.

The overload counter’s incremental value is directly proportional to

the amount of load at the output. As the amount of load increases this
counter value increases as well and soon it reaches to the value
5400. In case the amount of load starts dropping down to below
100% the counter value also decreases and in the “WARNINGS”
menu normal mode of the device is displayed. While remaining in
“Over Load Sd” mode the load is fed from bypass, the device
continuously monitor the load percent at the output. In this situation if
the load percent drops below 100%, the device automatically takes a
start and transfers the load from bypass to inverter.
d) 8th and 9th submenus are devoted to manual and periodical battery
testing procedures. These will be explained in detail in chapter-6
“Battery Test”.
e) 10th submenu is used to choose the operation mode of the device.
There are two options: On-line and Eco-mode. In order to get detail
information about Eco-mode, please refer to section-7.2. By pressing
the “Up” and “Down” keys you can choose either of the above two
options and finally press “ENTER” key to save the change.

37 Rev EU1
USER MANUAL EnPower33

f) The UPSs with parallel option can be run as one single unit as well. If
this option is adjusted to Off at the 11th submenu then the devices will
run as

one single unit. In order to change the state of this option it is required
to have a special password. This option can be changed only at the
“Stop Mode” of the device. In the devices, which are only able to run
as single unit and without parallel specialty this option cannot be
chosen as On.
g) As menu language of the user front panel, either Turkish or English
can be chosen by reaching the 12th submenu. After accessing this
menu use the “Up” or “Down” keys to choose the desired language
and press “ENTER” key to save it.
h) You can learn the total operation time of device as day, hour and
minute from the submenu 13. This time is not the real time rather it is
the total operation time of the UPS.

i) The clock and date can be adjusted from submenu 14. In order to
adjust, reach this menu and press “ENTER” key to get into it.

Rev EU1 38
EnPower33 USER MANUAL

In the third line of this menu there are clock and date information
while in the fourth line a cursor indicates the present value to be
changed. You can move this cursor by using “Left” and “Right” keys.
Now move the cursor to the desired property. By using the “Up” and
”Down” keys adjust to appropriate value. Move the cursor to any other
value without pressing the “ENTER” key and in a similar way change
that to proper value. After adjusting all the clock and date information
press “ENTER” key to save those changes and to exit from the menu.
24-hour clock mode is used for the clock information. Only two
numbers are used for expressing year information. So, for the year
2002, you should write 02. Once you have entered the required time
and date since then all values will be automatically adjusted, such as
the 30 or 31-day months and whether February this year will be 28 or
29-day long (in leap-year).

j) In a parallel system of (n+1) units, while n units run to share the load
equally, one unit can be run as redundant (waiting mode). This
redundant unit does not change its status until one of the active units
fails. In order to have longevity of the devices, instead of assigning
one unit as redundant forever it is wise to assign redundancy
periodically to other units. In this way, the moment the redundant
device starts operating as active unit, one of the active units
automatically retires and runs as redundant.
In the parallel devices the redundancy can be turn On/Off from 15th
submenu. But to get access, at first, correct passwords for parallel
operation should be entered in submenu 5-01, 5-02 and 5-03. In order
to enter the passwords, access those sub-menus and after entering
correct passwords, press “ENTER” key. Then access submenu 5-15
“Redundant Chg. Time” and press “ENTER” key. If you had entered
incorrect passwords then you will not be able to access submenu 5-15
to adjust redundancy option. In this submenu the third line contains
redundancy time, day and status while the fourth line contains a

39 Rev EU1
USER MANUAL EnPower33

cursor to access the values and to change. You can move this cursor
by using “Left” or “Right” keys.

There are three parameters regarding redundancy. The first one is

redundancy time, the next one is redundancy day and the third one is
redundancy status. The parameters in this submenu can be accessed
and changed in a similar way mentioned previously. For example, in
the figure above, on every Friday at 20.07 hrs the device in the
redundancy sequence will remain redundant for next one week and
this process will continue by turn in the following weeks making
another unit redundant and the redundant one active. Please note
that, whatever you set in the redundancy option, you must set the
same separately in each device. Otherwise, there may be sometime
that no device will be left as redundant or more than one device will
be redundant. While exiting from this menu you will see a bell symbol
in the middle of the first line on the panel if the redundancy status has
been adjusted “On”. If you have adjusted it to “Off” then this symbol
will not appear on the panel.

In the parallel devices, anytime the user can learn easily which unit is

HOW TO START AND STOP THE DEVICE

5.1 TURN-ON THE DEVICE
Caution-1: Do not turn on / close the battery circuit breaker or do not
connect the battery fuses before starting the device. Only when the device
passes to Normal mode (LED-3 turns ON over the Front Panel, see
Section 5.2.b), then close or connect the Battery circuit breaker or the
fuses with a clamp. This implies that the UPS DC bus bar has obtained a
safe voltage (405V DC) and now it is safe to connect the batteries.
Although you can open the battery circuit breaker/fuses anytime, once
you close it you do not need to open it again unless for servicing.

a) Please be sure of all the electrical connections made correctly.

Ensure that the bypass circuit breaker / switch disconnector is OFF.
b) Turn On the bypass and input circuit breaker or switch disconnector.
c) Switch On the On/Off switch found at the back of front door of the
UPS.
d) After a short beep siren at first a menu containing device information
and finally the “DISPLAYS” will appear in the front panel.

e) After a short while the device will pass to ‘Stop Mode’ and led-1 on the
front panel will be lit. While the bypass exists, the device connects the
bypass to the output. In case the bypass voltage does not exist or if it
is beyond the defined limit then the UPS will not transfer the bypass

to the output, rather output will be disconnected completely. The

device remains in this mode until the “ON” key in the front panel is
pressed to start the UPS.

5.2 START THE DEVICE

a) Press the “ON” key on the front panel.
b) The leds 6, 2, 5 and 3 will be turned On sequentially and led-1 will be
turned Off. This shows that the device started feeding the load with its
own produced energy and the batteries are being charged
continuously.

c) Turn On the battery circuit breaker or connect the DC fuses carefully.

d) From the main supply panel, disconnect the UPS input voltage. In this
situation leds 2 and 5 will be turned Off while leds 3 and 4 will be

5.3 STOP THE DEVICE

Caution-2: Do not turn off the On/Off switch (red switch) of the UPS
when the UPS inverter runs. You are only allowed to turn it off when the
device is in ‘Stop Mode’ (Bypass operation, Led-1 ON). Otherwise turning
off the ON/OFF switch while inverter runs may cause damage to the
inverter IGBTs. Safe shutdown procedure is as follows:

a) Shutdown all the devices connected to the UPS.

b) Press the “OFF” key on the front panel.
c) The following menu will appear in LCD screen with continuous buzzer
sound.

d) This menu and the buzzer sound are to avoid any accidental
shutdown. Press the “ENTER” key to approve the shutdown operation.
e) If the bypass exists then the device transfers it at the output and only
led-1 will be lit. Otherwise, if it doesn’t exist or beyond the defined
limit then the UPS will not transfer the bypass to the output rather
output will be disconnected completely. In this situation no led will be
lit.

NOTE: In step d if “ON” key is pressed instead of “ENTER” key then the
device will not stop and will continue its normal operation.

5.4 TURN-OFF THE DEVICE

a) Turn Off the output circuit breaker or switch disconnector.
b) Turn Off the On/Off switch of the UPS.
c) Turn Off the input and bypass (if exists) circuit breaker(s) or switch
disconnector.

5.5 WHEN TO CLOSE (TURN ON) THE BATTERY CIRCUIT

BREAKER OR THE DC FUSES?
1. Please read the previous subsections of this section of the User
manual for Start/ Stop correct procedures.
2. When the device passes to Normal mode (LED-3 ON over the Front
Panel, see Section 5.2.b of the user manual), only then close the
Battery circuit breaker or connect the DC fuses. This implies that the
UPS DC bus bar has obtained a safe voltage (405V DC) and now its

time to connect the batteries. Once you make the connection you
don’t need to open it again unless for servicing.

5.6 SAFETY ABOUT ON/OFF SWITCH:

The UPS is powered by turning On this switch. It is usually red in color
and situated either at the backside of the device or at the back of the front door
(in big size UPS). The numbers 0 and 1 are printed over it implying that the 0
is Off and 1 is On. As soon as the switch is turned On, within a few seconds all
the electronic card units are energized and the user interface front panel is
activated. Please note that this switch is only to power On switch of the device.
UPS start/stop operation is done with the aid of the press buttons on the front
panel.
Do not turn OFF the On/Off switch (the Red color switch) when the
inverter runs (LED-3 ON). You should only turn it OFF when the device is in
Bypass/Stop Mode (LED-1 On, LED-3 Off). For safe shutdown follow section
5.2 of this user manual.

5.7 HOW TO ACTIVATE OR DEACTIVATE MANUAL BYPASS

In normal operating condition manual bypass circuit breaker (CB) / switch
disconnector (SG) must be kept Off. In case you need servicing the UPS
without interrupting the load you have to turn on the manual bypass CB / SG
safely. The following steps must be executed to activate manual bypass
without interrupting the load:
a) Stop the device as described in section 5.3
b) Turn On the manual bypass CB / SG
c) Turn Off all other the switch disconnectors / circuit breakers one by
one.
Without interrupting the load if you want to de-activate manual bypass to
return to normal operation then follow as described below:
a) Follow the steps described in section 5.1 steps b, c, d, e and f only
b) When only led-1 is On over the front panel, turn OFF the manual
bypass CB / SG.
The device is safe to take start. To start the device now follow section
5.2.

5.8 IN CASE MAINS FAIL

a) In case of mains’ failure, the load will be fed by the batteries. In this
situation Leds 2 and 5 will turn Off and Leds 3, 4 will be turned On.
On the LCD screen, automatically the menu “Battery Values” will
appear. In this menu you can see the battery voltage and current.

45 Rev EU1
USER MANUAL EnPower33

While the load is being fed by battery, the battery voltage decreases
proportionally with the amount of connected load. In the meantime if
you access the “WARNINGS” menu then in the first sub-menu you
can see “Mains Low” warning.

At the same time this warning represents the device’s operating

mode. At this stage the device has gone to “Mains Low” mode. During
this mode the buzzer beeps 4 times in every 2 minutes.
b) If the mains do not return and the battery voltage drops below the
battery nominal voltage (as default 360 V) then the device switches to
‘Battery Operation’ mode. In this mode the buzzer beeps twice in
every 2 minutes.
c) If the mains failure still continues and the battery voltage drops below
the Battery Low Voltage (as default 310V) then the device switches to
‘Battery Low’ mode. In this mode the buzzer beeps 3 times in every 10
seconds. This repeatedly beeping sound warns the user that the
batteries are about to run out. At this stage it is suggested to stop all
the connected devices to the UPS and to stop the UPS finally.
d) If the mains do not return and the battery voltage drops below the
Battery Low Shutdown voltage (as default 300V) then the UPS
switches to “Battery Low Sd” mode. In this mode the buzzer beeps 4
times in 5 seconds. At this stage the batteries are completely
discharged. To protect battery life the UPS disconnect the output at
this stage.
e) While the device is in “Battery Low Sd” mode, it waits for the mains to
return. But if the mains do not return for a long time (for example, 5
hours) the UPS will completely shutdown due to complete energy
discharge of the batteries. After this instant when the mains return the
device will be On and re-started automatically. In a similar way, if the
mains return before the batteries are completely discharged then the
device will take start automatically.

SECTION-6
BATTERY TEST
In EnPower33 model UPS, the batteries can be tested in two different
ways: Manual and Periodic tests.

6.1 MANUAL TEST

In this way, end users can test batteries whenever they want. The user
should start the test process. Followings are the steps of this test:

a) First of all, it is obligatory to determine the battery testing time. To do

this, select the submenu 3-42 (Battery Test Time) in ‘SETTINGS’
menu. Use “Down” and “Up” keys for adjusting this time in minutes.
As a default set value this is 2 minutes.

As a second step its necessary to set the battery test voltage. In order
to do that access sub-menu no. 3-39 “Battery Test Volt” and adjust
the battery test voltage. As a default this voltage value is 340Vdc.

b) In order to start the test process, while the device is in “Normal

Mode”, select sub-menu 5-08 “Manual Bat Test” and press the “ON”
key on the front panel. After this instant the manual battery test will
be started.

Rev EU1 48
EnPower33 USER MANUAL

c) Please note that battery test cannot be started if the device is in any
other mode than the normal mode. If so, then in submenu no. 5-08
the 4th line remains blank. When the test operation started, in the
bottom line of the screen there is a battery test period counter at the
right side. During the test this value decreases. The batteries are
tested till the counter’s value reaches to zero and if there is no fault
with them, UPS will return to its normal operation mode
automatically.
• During the test; if battery voltage drops under the set Battery
Test Voltage (340V), then the device issues “Battery Fault”
warning
• If the battery voltage drops below the Battery Low Voltage
(310V), the device issues “Battery Open” warning and transfers
the load to bypass. In order to return to normal mode, press
the “ON” key from the front panel.

6.2 PERIODICAL TEST

In this way, batteries can be tested automatically at determined period
intervals. Followings are the steps of this test:
a) In order to activate periodic battery test operation at first access sub
menu 5-09 Periodic Battery Test and set a period on day basis. This
period can be in between 1-255. If the period is set Off (0 days) then
periodical battery test will not be performed. As default this value is
set to 7 days.

b) If any period other than “off“ is assigned for periodic test then the UPS
will perform battery test in two different times:
• When the device is Off, after turning On the On/Off switch,
approximately 4 minutes after the device passes to “Normal
Mode”, this test is done for 1 minute.
• At intervals set as battery test period in days, test is done for
Battery Test Time.
Once set, the periodic battery test operation is automatically
performed at the defined interval in the steps as explained for manual
battery test operation.

SECTION-7

OPTIONAL OPERATIONS
7.1 PARALLEL OPERATING SYSTEM
The information and properties explained in this section is only valid for
the devices with parallel operation feature. Please note that parallel operation
feature is not available in all EnPower33 model UPSs.
7.1.1 INTRODUCTION AND PROPERTIES
(N+1) number of EnPower33 model UPSs with parallel property can be
connected together parallely to feed a load system. Parallel configuration is a
system, which ensures more sensitive and reliable operation of the UPS to
continue feeding the load during electrical blackout. Because, in a parallel
configuration even if one unit of the UPSs goes out of order, the other units still
operate and thus ensures a continuous feeding of the load. At that moment it
is not necessary to feed the load by bypass. This is why parallel configuration
plays a key role for more secured operation.
The failure probability in a parallel system is comparatively lesser than
that of the single unit device. Thus it provides more reliable operation.
In case all the units go out of order, the system switches the load to
bypass automatically and when they return to normal condition they start
operating automatically in parallel mode.
In a parallel configuration, N units feed the load together and one unit
remains stand-by. So, each of the N units equally distribute the necessary load
current. N can be in between 1 and 5. Thus in a parallel configuration
minimum 2 units and maximum 6 units work.
If one of the (N+1) units is taken out of circuit for service and
maintenance, the other units are still able to feed the load alone. In this
situation it is not required to transfer the load to bypass.
One of the units is assigned to remain as standby. By changing some
values in “ENEL” menu the user may have the units redundantly standby by
turn. Please refer to section:4.2.5-j for adjustments. During factory
manufacturing process one of the units is assigned as Master, another one as
Stand-by Master and the others as Slaves. The necessary reference for current
sharing, frequency and phase synchronization are produced by the Master
unit. In case the Master unit goes out of order then the Stand-by Master unit
automatically starts acting like Master. Looking at the first line of the LCD
panel one can easily learn the unit’s status whether the unit is a Master, a
Standby Master or a Slave.

Rev EU1 50
EnPower33 USER MANUAL

A parallel device has the following properties:

• Like single unit device this device also have double conversion, on-
line operating system with its own bypass unit, battery-charging
circuitry and an overall control unit.
• Each one of the units can run individually as well.
• Since there is not much difference in it than a single unit device, there
is not much accessories needed for the system.
• Except a few, since there is not much difference in setting up and
operating it than that of a single unit device, the required technical
knowledge is almost similar for both.

The units configured as parallel :

• Should be of same model and power.
• All the working (N) units share the load equally.
• One of the units runs in Primary Master mode (M), another one in
Secondary-Master mode (m) and the others run in Slave mode (S).
The unit in Master mode, produces required references for voltage,
current, frequency and phase regulation
• In case the unit in Primary Master mode goes out of operation, the
unit in Secondary Master mode temporarily works as a Master mode.
As soon as the Primary Master unit returns to normal operation, the
Secondary Master unit also returns to its original state.
• The communication among the units is accomplished through RS232
cables.
• While one of the units let the load fed from bypass the others cannot
feed the common output through its inverter. For this reason if one
unit passes to normal on-line mode while another unit being in bypass
mode then the system completely disconnects the output from it.

7.1.2 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

The connection procedures of a parallel system configuration are stated
in steps as follows:
• Try to install the units as near to each other as possible (max. 10m)
• Complete the input cable connections of the units. Take special care
of the phase sequence while doing these connections. Do not connect
the neutral points of the units parallely, rather connect separate
neutral cable to each unit.
• At the load panel, connect the outputs of all the units parallely. Please
be sure to connect the same respective phases (U1-U2..Un, V1-
V2..Vn, W1-W2..-Wn) of the units together.
• Complete the battery connections. While doing this please take care
of the polarity of the battery bank. Connect separate battery banks for
each unit. Do not connect more than one unit to the same battery
bank.
• Make the ground connections to the device system. Do not connect
the grounding points of the units parallely, rather connect separate
grounding cables to each unit.
• Two DB9M male type connectors can be found at the back of some of
the devices while it can be found at the side of the other ones. You
will be provided with some cables printed “Parallel” over it. Connect
these cables to those ports and tighten the screws. Thus the units are
connected in a series with two ends open. Since the communication
among the units is vitally important for parallel operation, it is
recommended to place the units as near as possible to each other.
For reliable operation it is recommended to use the connecting cables
less than 10m in length. Please try to keep away this parallel cable
from high current carrying cables and from the electrically noisy
devices.

In a (n+1) parallel system, all the units should be of same model and
power rating.

7.2 ECO-MODE UPS

7.2.1 DEFINITIONS AND FEATURES

Feeding the load from bypass saves energy and costs less than that of
from inverter. This is why this mode of operation is called Eco-mode, meaning
economic operation. If the loads do not require true sinusoidal signal then in
order to save energy the user may choose this mode. Eco-mode UPS implies
two technologies in one –On Line and Eco Mode. From the front panel the user
can set the device in any one of the two modes.
If the bypass exists within the desired voltage range and the harmonic
distortion is not so high, the loads insensitive to true sinusoidal signal can be
fed from bypass instead of from inverter output. Being in double-conversion
topology, the UPS rectifier and inverter output always remain ready and
synchronized with the bypass so that as soon as the bypass failure occurs,
almost without any interruption the inverter output starts feeding the load.
When the bypass returns with desired voltage conditions, after a short time the
device cuts the output from its inverter and starts feeding the load from bypass
without any interruption.
In order to learn how to adjust the device either to Eco-mode or to On-
Line mode, please refer to section 4.2.5 (e) of this user manual.
Please note that here the mains and bypass are thought to be from
different sources although in most cases the user use the same source for
both. In Eco-Mode, always bypass is continuously sampled and watched. So,
upon bypass failure or highly distorted condition the device takes instant
decision of feeding the load by inverter. In case mains source is different than
bypass, upon bypass and/or mains condition, several operational changes in
rectifier and inverter units can occur:
• If mains fail but bypass exists then bypass is at the output, rectifier
unit remains out of operation and the inverter is run by battery.
• If mains exist but bypass fails then inverter is at the output, both
rectifier and inverter run by mains and the batteries are charged if
required.
• If both mains and bypass fail then rectifier remains out of operation,
inverter runs by battery and feeds the load at the output.
• If both mains and bypass exist then bypass is at the output, rectifier
and inverter are run by mains and the batteries are being charged if
required.

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL WITH UPS

There are two protocols available in order to communicate with the
EnPower33 model UPS: Universal SNMP protocol and EPC (ENEL Power
Control). Any one of the two protocols can be chosen making different set-up
connections and adjusting finally from the front panel. Both the protocols are
described as follows:

8.1 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)

8.1.1 DEFINITION AND FEATURES

EnPower33 Model UPS devices support Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP).
In modern era, a widely used protocol SNMP is used in order to observe
and control more than one UPS (at the same time) connected to a large-scale
network environment, from a center. To that purpose, each of the UPS
connected to the network should be accompanied by an SNMP adapter and
then be connected to the network. SNMP adapter ensures control of a UPS
installed in a different area just as easy as monitoring a UPS that is connected
to LAN (Local Area Network). The UPSs installed through SNMP adapter are
given one IP address each and in this way they are connected to the center. As
a result, all the information of the UPSs regarding their operational features
can be known from the center. A EnPower33 model UPS can be connected to
the network through an SNMP adapter. As a whole the system provides:
• Observation of UPS operational status on computer screen.
• Easier modification of certain parameters of the devices from
computer screen.
• While the device is running by batteries, the battery information is
continuously obtained and thus it provides safety operation.
• Easy observation of the input, output and battery status information of
the device from the computer screen.
• The faulty conditions of the device can be learnt from any computer
connected to the network and thus provide an opportunity to take care
in time.
• More than one UPS connected in a network environment can be
monitored just from one computer of the network

57 Rev EU1
USER MANUAL EnPower33

8.1.2 MAKING CONNECTIONS

In order to connect the UPS to a network environment at first an SNMP
adaptor is needed. For this reason you have to obtain an SNMP adaptor
packet. When it is available you are ready to execute the following steps to
connect the device with the network.
• In the adaptor packet there are a Setup cable, an operating cable,
power supply adaptor and a user manual.
• Read the user manual thoroughly to learn the installation procedures
of this adaptor.
• Connect the adaptor to any computer with the help of the Setup
Cable.
• Install the adaptor according to the instruction mentioned in the User
Manual.
• Connect the adaptor with the RS232 port at the back of the UPS by
the Operation Cable.
• Connect a socket to the output of the UPS. Connect the Power Supply
plug into this socket.
• With a standard network cable, connect the adapter to the network
hub.
• Install one of the SNMP Observation and Administration software
(such as SNMPc 5.0B) in the computer that will be used to observe
the operation of the UPS.
By now the UPS system is set ready to be observed from a computer
screen.

8.2 EPC (RS 232 Based Enhanced Power Control)

Enel Power Control (EPC) is a professional Observation and Controlling
program developed to communicate with UPS. Some of the benefits of this
program are as follows:
• Observation of UPS operational status on computer screen.
• Remote intervention directly to the UPS system by a computer
whenever necessary. Particularly in failure cases, the user can receive
information from UPS system and intervene to it via modem even
being in far from it.
• Easy adjustment of UPS parameters.
• Continuous transmission of battery information for its safety
operation, while the batteries are in operation.
• Safety shutdown for computers when the battery bank is about to
run out.
• Receiving and saving continuous data or information from UPS such
as all operation status; input, output and battery voltages and
currents; input, output frequencies.
8.2.1 MAKING CONNECTIONS
The communication between the UPS and a computer can be performed
in two ways:
• For short distances via direct serial cable connection or
• For long distances via modem and a telephone line.

8.2.1.1 Direct Serial Cable Connection

The installation needs no other connecting elements except a serial
cable. There is a DB9M male type serial communication port at the side cover
or at the back of the device. Connect one of the two female type terminals of a
simple (one-to-one) serial cable to the UPS and the other to the one of the
serial communication ports (COM1, COM2) behind of computer. If the COM
port of the computer is DB25 male-connector then the serial cable should
contain a DB9 female connector at one end and a DB25 female-connector at
the other end. It is good enough to make a minimal connection for
communication as shown in Figure-12 and Figure-13

Rev EU1 60
EnPower33 USER MANUAL

8.2.1.2 Modem Connection

In this type, communication between UPS-PC is accomplished by two
modems via a telephone line so that you can access to the UPS system even
sitting at far from it. One of the two modems is to be connected to the UPS
and the other to the PC.

a) UPS Modem Connection

Figure-14 UPS-Modem-Telephone line connection

The structure of the serial cable used between UPS-MODEM (and PC-
MODEM) is a bit different from that used between UPS-PC. Its one terminal
should be DB9F female type and the other terminal should be DB25M male
type. It will be good enough to make a minimal connection for communication
(Figure-14, Figure-15).
§ After connecting UPS-MODEM by a serial, connect a telephone line to
the line point of modem.
§ Feed the modem from another power supply.
§ Power On the modem.
To obtain communication via modem, initial values should be set up to
the modem by UPS. To do this from UPS display, select the submenu (SET
MODEM) in “ENEL” menu and press “ENTER” key. Thus the whole process for
communication via modem and the telephone line can be completed.
