Question 5

(a) We are to build a 1000-m3 oil container of cylinder-shaped with a lid, see Figure Q.5(a)

below. The costs of the materials used to build the base, the cylindrical body and the lid

of the oil container are RM30/m2, RM30/m2 and RM20/m2 respectively.

Figure Q.5(a)

Use the method of Lagrange multipliers to obtain the dimensions of the oil container so

that the cost of the total materials used to build the oil can is a minimum.

(b) The TIV Telephone Company provides long-distance telephone services in an area.

According to the company’s records, the average length of all long-distance calls placed

through this company in 2004 was 12.44 minutes. The company’s management wanted to

check if the mean length of the current long-distance calls is different from 12.44

minutes. A sample of 150 such calls placed through this company produced a mean

length x of 13.71 minutes. The standard deviation of all such calls is 2.65 minutes.

Use 2% level of significance to conclude whether the mean length of all current long-

distance calls is different from 12.44 minutes.

(ii) Suggest an appropriate test statistic for the test, and indicate its distribution

clearly.

(2 marks)

(iii) Establish a criteria for rejecting the null hypothesis.
