CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 OVERVIEW
“KUALA LUMPUR: Children inside the Pusat Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah in
Kampung Datuk Keramat, could not escape the blaze as the windows were barred.

There was also only one door, severely limiting escape routes.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, said based on
preliminary reports by Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the school's location plans had not been
approved as it did not comply with safety specifications.

"I was told that (at least) 22 students and two wardens perished in this incident. While at
the location, I saw the bodies of children trapped in two corners of the building.

"They were believed to have failed to escape as the fire was raging and there was only
one door.

"All the window grilles were also locked," he said when met at the location at Jalan
Keramat Hujung.

Tengku Adnan said the Fire and Rescue Department's forensic team as well as police will
expedite their operations to ensure a speedy burial for the victims.”

(Newspaper quotes on the fire tragedy at Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school, 14 September
2017)

On top is the news of the fire tragedy occurred in our country, Malaysia this year. This
sad and mind-numbing event shocked everyone and raise a high alarm to all residents to
review back on the safety in their house. Most of the designs security grill in the market that
are installed at the home nowadays do not meet the safety requirements and guidelines
provided by the federal Fire and Rescue Department (FRD). This is because the design
always focusses on the security aspect from thieves and aesthetic value only without
considering other aspect such as safety of the residents during fire, flood, landslide and other
emergencies.

There are two types of window grille installed in Malaysian housing area, firstly, fixed-
permanent grille (cannot be opened from outside and inside) and detachable (can be opened
from inside usually by a locking system). However, this type of detachable window grille is
always overlooked by the resident because mostly the cost become the issue. So, window
grille practicality in both security and life saver in emergency becomes an issue nowadays. A

1
survey had been conducted to investigate the criteria and requirement that can be improved
on the window grille.

1.2 OBJECTIVE

The aim of this project is to develop innovative in practicality of window grille towards
safety without neglecting the security and aesthetic features to the residential with all the
elements below:
I. Easy to open from inside the premise
II. Keyless locking system
III. Manageable by all ages even the children with parent care
IV. Anti-rust
V. Failure proof
VI. Low maintenance and cost

1.3 PRODUCT BENCHMARKING

Product benchmarking had been done to compare all the existing product that are the solution to
window grille safety issue. All of these products are available in the market quite recently. So,
after through some research and survey on the market, following is the shortlisted product that are
widely and reliable used by the residents:
I. Easy out fire window grill
II. Retractable window grill
III. Removable window grill
IV. Automatic grill opener system
V. Foot release kick type

Figure 1:Easy Out Window Grill

Easy Out Fire Window Grill is a two steps mechanism to open the grille. By pulling the

safety pulley behind the notice sign, the grille is unlocked and user can open the grill by hand.

This grille is designed with keyless feature and using solid steel as the material of construction.

2
The manufacturer who distribute this grille claim they can install this grille under 30 minutes and

durable in usage for years. However, the design has the tendency of kids playing with the safety

pulley that can lead to accidents.

Figure 2: Retractable Window Grill

Retractable Window Grille is a high security window grille with added structural
strength from a specially designed lattice assembly system using high patented grade steel
inner-screws. The design of the window grilles incorporate a high grade steel construction
in cross ‘X’ lattice as standard and ‘S’ lattice as an insurance approved option. The
locking system is with a key to lock the grille in place to prevent from intruder.

Figure 3: Removable Window Grill

Removable Window Grille is an internal grill that is secure and removable. Looks
from outside to be fixed and immovable. However, using a secured simple padlock or
locking system from inside, the grille can be unlocked and then remove the grille on by
one.

3
Figure 4: Automatic Window Grill Components
Automatic Grille Opener system is 100 percent automatic using electronic
component that been developed to overcome the weaknesses of locked manually type of
window grille. So, whenever an emergency happened, a sensor will detect the movement of
resident towards the window, the window automatically will be opened. However, this grille
is not failure proof where the system is using electrical supply, so, if there is short in
electrical supply, the system will not function. Then, the cost also high for the installation and
maintenance as user need to update the software to avoid virus attack from corrupted the
main system data of the device and the replacement of faulty component also costly.

Figure 5: Foot Release Stirrup Type Sketch

Foot Release Stirrup Type for window grill is a design to help resident to open the
window grill is short time with using keyless locking system and using cable system to
unlock the grill during an emergency. This kind of design is still under prototype and not
been in used in market yet.

4
Every existing product or solution is had been go through on their functionality,
practicality and reliability to solve the safety issue of window grill against emergency. So,
all the information of the product is summarized in following table:

PROPOSED SOLUTION
2.1 OVERVIEW

Previously, we had done our products benchmarking and we have already basic

concept on how is our design. Basically, this chapter will discuss on how to solve the

problems and propose a design that will be the solution for the problem. So, as our problem is

unsafety design of windows grills at Malaysian resident, we decided to design a locking

system that can be integrated to their current window grill with some modifications. The

locking system basically a keyless system that will unlocked the window grill with just a pull

of lever. So, initial sketch to our design is as shown below:

Figure 6: Design Sketch

6
2.2 DESIGN ATTRIBUTE AND CRITERIA

Then, after done the benchmarking process, for each product, they have their own

pros and cons that lead us to conclude some unmet gap or requirements are can be improve

and implemented in our design project. These unmet needs will be our criteria for our basic

design along with user requirements that are obtained from market research and survey to

have the details on what are customers needed in our proposed design.

11
3.2.2 Hinges

Hinges basically is our key component where hinges will be attached to wall and window

grill and the only thing that hold hinges together is the pin rod. So, the key here, we should

enable the pin to slide out from the hinges thus let the window grill unlock.

3.2.3 Spring

As mentioned before, the pin of the hinges must be designed such way it can slide out easily,

so here, the function of the spring is to hold pin in its position within the hinges when it is not

unlocked.

3.2.4 Steel Rod

Steel rod is used to connect our component together such as the pin, lever and spring. Here,

we proposed to use steel material because of its availability and cost factor. As for corrosion

and rusting prevention, the steel rod will be lubricated with grease as well as to ease the

movability of the rod.

3.2.5 Plastic Casing

Another step prevention from damage, the system will be covered in a plastic casing. Mainly

purposed for protection of the system from being jeopardized. In the casing, steel rod will be

hold in place by using bracket but still allowing the steel rod to move up and down. The

plastic casing consists of the hollow casing and the cover. It still need to have capability to

open the plastic casing for maintenance purpose.

3.2.6 Lever Housing

The lever housing will be constructed separately from the plastic casing. The reason why we

need to put the lever in a case is to protect the lever from being used during not in time

12
emergency that can lead to serious incidents, for example children may unlock the grill lock

and the grill is open, the children vulnerable to danger from inside and outside of house. Then,

the housing also will be equipped with cover that can be opened during emergency to pull the

lever. The lock system for the lever housing is by a simple latch so that it is not easily opened

during no emergency happen.

3.2.7 Bracket

Bracket is used to hold the steel rod in casing. Using stainless steel bracket to keep the steel

rod in position, there will be chance for the rod to stuck and damage due to friction, so we

lubricate the rod and bracket with grease to ease to movement.

3.2.8 Alarm system

Alarm system is one of the protection for children safety and to make people surrounding to

vigilante to what happen at the window during emergency. For examples, if children

accidently unlock the grill, they can jump or climb the window and get out through the

window, the problem is when the window at double storey houses, where children can jump

and expose to the danger, so, the alarm system will be triggered when somebody unlock the

grill.

13
CHAPTER 4

PERFORMANCE INTEGRATION

4.1 Pin Design

The source from NASA stated that the average pulling force of an adult is about 2700N. So in

order to avoid from intruder, the pin itself need to sustain the force. Based on the design

calculation in previous chapter, the diameter that the pin need is just 1.5mm. However, the

typical diameter for pin in the hinge is 1cm which is more than enough to sustain the force.

After the product had been made, the pin can withstand the force.

4.2 Spring Design

The spring design is based on the force that can be applied by child which is about 150N at

the lever. From the design number, we decide that our grill can be detached at maximum 10

seconds. From this time, we managed to calculate the spring tension. From the prototype that

had been made, the criteria of the spring is hardly to found, however, the ready made spring

is enough to withstand the force that we want into our system.

4.3 Safety alarm

14
The alarm act as safety precaution as it will be triggered when the window grill is being open.

The sound is noise enough to alert the whole house or even the neighbourhood. In order to

cut off the alarm sound, the owner can switch off the alarm using key provided. Also, the

alarm will be stop if the grill is put back to its position after 30 seconds.

4.4 Testing the prototype

The prototype has been made based on real dimension and followed the design number.

However, in term of casing, the prototype is made from wood since we do not have an

equipment for metal sheet. Though, in did not make any different in term of performance

since it just aesthetic value. Overall, the prototype worked so well in terms of its mechanism

and performance.

BUSINESS PLAN

6.1 Business Model Canvas

To make our business going accordingly, business model canvas is used so that our the plan

and the target is clear. Below shows the model canvas as a reference for our business plan

Table 8 : Business model canvas

6.2 Key Partners

The key partners for this product are grill manufacturer and also the house developer in

neighborhood area. This is because there are related to our product as they can involve in our

manufacturing process and also business.

20
6.3 Key Activities

Key activities for our product is to manufacture or customize the shape of the rod. For now,

all the components is assembled by ourselves except for welding process and shaping the rod.

In this matter, grill manufacturer acts as key partner in order to have better quality of product

for future plan.

6.4 Key Resources

The key resource to build this product is to have enough equipment and man power

especially to shape the rod and to build the casing for product. However, type of casing may

be vary depend on customer demand. All of all, the most important is that the engineering

calculation before making this product so that it met the design number needed.

6.5 Value Proposition

Our product is very useful for safety reason. What good about our product is that the house

owner does not need to buy new grill with safety but just buy our product since our product is

just a mechanism to detach the fixed window grill. Its strength is still there and no worries

about the intruder since we have the safety alarm to alert the surround area. Then, for the

casing of our product, customer can choose what material they want since it just aesthetic

value. The product is so simple that the user just need to pull down the lever to detach the

grill

6.6 Customer relationship

We will interact at least once annually for maintenance. However, the user also can check by

themselves. Also, we can maintain the relation with customer by making an improvement to

the product.

21
6.7 Channels

Channels is important since it will play an important part to run the business. Online sales

such Mudah.com and lazada can be the one. Besides, marketing advertisement in mall by

making the tutorial on our product can be also effective.

6.8 Cost

The cost that we need to take into account is the assembly cost, manufacturing cost, marketing

cost and transportation cost. All these cost is include human workforce and also storage.

6.9 Revenue

The revenue for this product can be achieved by selling the products, maintenance issue.

6.10 Sales Projection

Looking to current situation, there are many house development going on. Moreover, there

are also many houses that use fixed window grill. So, our target for the first year is that our

product is sold for 1800 units.

Overall, our product cost is at RM85 and this price can be lower if we had colleborate with

our key partners. For the first year, we will sell the product at RM100 each which we will get

RM15 profit for each.

Cost of product = RM 85 x 1800 = RM 153 000

Marketing target cost = RM 10 000
Revenue = RM 100 x 1800 = RM 180 000
Total Profit ( 1st yr) = RM 180 000 - RM 163 000 = RM 17 000

22
We provide or spend RM 10000 for additional cost such as marketing and etc. The product is

being targeted to rise up for the next four years. The sales of projection’s graph is shown in

the figure below

Figure 10 : Prediction on Sales projection for next five years

23
CHAPTER 7

ETHIS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

7.1 Product Warning

Overall, we can say that our product is save. However, there are some point that misfortune

might occur. So, it is advised and warned to not put something heavy on the casing of the

product. This is because, we afraid that the casing will be broke. Then, do not pull down the

safety grill occasionally because it will loosen the stiffness of the spring.User also warned not

to detach the grill instead for emergency since the alarm might be false triggered to the

neighborhood. However, our product is easy to handle

7.2 Safety and health

The product has been calculated such that it can withstand the force from the intruder. In

terms of safety, the grill should be open during emergency even it can be open anytime but

for the sake of safety, it should be used when needed. However, it is recommended to check

the grill once it 3 months so that we know that its still working as usual.

In terms of health, kid are advised not to play with the grill because the noise from the alarm

may damage the hearing. Parents should take care of their children and if somehow the child

pull off the grill, immediately switch off the alarm using the remote control.Overall this

product does not effect our health at all and does not cause pollution to the environment
