End of the Year Review

Future Plans/Meeting of Your Goals

As I reflect back on the past school year of Espanol III, there are numerous goals that I

have not fully accomplished, but have made progress in. Most of the goals I have made at the

beginning of the school year mainly consisted of improving my vocabulary and writing skills.

One of my goals was to overcome the issue of the conjugation of verbs. While I have been able

to improve my use of verbs in the past tense, I still struggle to change the tense with ease,

especially on my own. Many times, I still refer back to the preterite/imperfect folder as a guide to

my writing, but gradually have used it less over the course of time. I believe that through practice

when writing in my journal I have been able to make progress towards this goal since I have

grown comfortable to writing sentences in past tense when it fits along with the context of my

writing.

The new goals I have for Spanish will be a continuation of one of my initial goals of the

school year--speaking. What I have noticed in my speech is that I only state key terms that

convey the main idea rather than state a complete sentence. In addition to that, when I speak, I

mainly refer to the present tense and fear stepping into the realm of mentioning anything in past

tense because I uncertain if I must use imperfect or preterite since the context of the conversation

alters in exchange of both.

While I do not plan to continue my Spanish career as I embark onto senior year, that does

not mean my Spanish career will conclude entirely. Instead, I plan on embracing Spanish more
through means of college courses as I transition into studying upstate at the University of

Nevada, Reno. Since my future career goals involve becoming a primary school teacher, I find it

necessary to continue my Spanish career as it will be of benefit to me when I am in a situation

where Spanish may be the only means of communication for a student, parent, or even fellow

staff member. Aside from academic reasons, I find genuine interest in learning Spanish as it

becomes a gateway for me to immerse myself into the Hispanic culture. With having friends and

church members living in the heart of San Diego, I find that being literate in Spanish has allowed

me to bond and connect with my friends who are native Spanish speakers. Being able to form

relationships with others has encouraged me to prosper on in my Spanish career as learning the

Spanish language will be of great benefit to me in making connections that I would not have

been able to make without Spanish.

Portfolio Synopsis

My portfolio represents my overall growth in Spanish in a social and emotional sense.

Never would I have thought that the Spanish language and culture could have personally

connected to me. There are many times were I could not find much significance in using Spanish

language or applying the culture to my life. Now, this portfolio shows how much I have fallen in

great interest with simple things such as movies and songs just because it is said in Spanish. Not

only does this portfolio represent my efforts in this class, it also shows how often I have been

able to use Spanish over the past school year.

The methods I had done to choose the writings included in my portfolio was mainly from

the journal because of the freedom I was granted during this time of writing. Utilizing my journal

as a main source of my writing being exposed by common mistakes, but also improvements I
have subtly made over the course of the year. The way my writing had changed over the course

of the year has mainly dealt with my sentence variety and following grammatical rules and

proper conjugations. Many times in the beginning of the school year, I had stuck to very

simplistic sentences, never attempting to step out of my comfort zone of present tense sentences.

Now, I have grown into becoming more complex in the sense of explaining further in depth as to

why I have this opinion on a particular topic or even adding more detail in my sentences.

Creating this portfolio had become a wonderful means of reflection for me because I

never believed that I would have progressed this far in my Spanish career. Not only was I able to

ease myself into becoming more comfortable with reading and writing in Spanish, I tend to

surprise myself with how genuinely happy become whenever I learn more about the Hispanic

culture through folktales or by singing Spanish pop songs. Not only has this portfolio allowed me

to reflect on my personal growth, it has opened my eyes to see that the Hispanic culture is

connected to my life in one way or the other. Overall, the creation of this portfolio motivates me

to reach further in my Spanish learning experience through reading, writing, and speaking.

Self-Evaluation/Final Reflection

To my surprise, Spanish III H had flown by with ease--for the majority of the time at

least. While I did not think much of Spanish III as a significant part of my education at the

beginning of the school year, it was to my surprise of how significant Spanish had been apart of

my junior year. Honestly, the effort I had put forth Spanish III was more than I anticipated at the

beginning of the school year. Being in a classroom where lessons consisted of highly engaging

activities and required consistent practice in reading and writing, I found the motivation in

myself to uphold the high expectations that were brought onto me. In addition to this, the overall
growth and development I had experienced in this year has increased my self-confidence in

utilizing Spanish on a more regular basis. In comparison to the beginning of the school year, my

Spanish language skills made me highly self-conscious and afraid to even step further into

learning Spanish because I never believed that I would reach the level I am at now. While my

Spanish skills have surely improved over the course of the year, the one skill I am proud to say I

have progress in, but never believed that I would ever reach this far in, is my listening skills.

While Spanish I and II had been a repetitive process of basic commands, but never understanding

any phrases beyond that, I find myself being able to create connections and follow directions in

ways that I was unable to before.
