Yamaha Motor to
invest Rs 200 cr in
Chennai plant
India Yamaha Motor, the Japanese
two-wheeler manufacturer, will
invest Rs 200 crore to ramp up
production at Chennai plant.
The company has started work
on expanding its two-wheeler
output by 50% with the project
to be completed by March 2018.
The company’s factory at Vallam-
Vadagal now rolls out 2,100
scooters and motorcycles daily or
about six lakh units a year. Work on
an additional line is on which will
be completed by March 2018.
HTT to launch India's
first Hyperloop in AP
The US-based Hyperloop
Transportation Technologies
has signed a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) with the
Andhra Pradesh Economic
Development Board (APEDB),
to facilitate the development of
HTT's Hyperloop Transportation
System. The proposed route for
the Hyperloop is between the
city centers of Vijaywada and
Amaravati, potentially turning a
trip of more than one hour into
a 6 minute ride. The project will
use a PPP model with funding
primarily from private investors.

Mahindra acquires Turkish tractor
maker Erkunt
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M)
announced its second take-over deal
in Turkey through the acquisition of
Erkunt Traktor Sanayii AS, the fourth
largest tractor brand in Turkey. This
association with Erkunt on the back of
the Hisarlar acquisition earlier in the
year will help in growing Mahindra’s
farm equipment business in the
strategic market of Turkey. With two
strong brands such as Mahindra and
Erkunt coming together and with a
wider combined product portfolio,
this association will offer complete
mechanisation solutions to the diverse
needs of Turkish farmers, thereby
creating a more significant presence in
Turkey. The association will also build
an export business especially in the
neighbouring markets of the Middle
East, CIS and Europe.

supplier, plans to set up second
manufacturing facility at Becharji
in Mehsana district of Gujarat. The
plant, which will go on stream in
January 2019, will cater primarily

Goldstone’s electric bus flagged off by
Himachal Roadways
The Hyderabad-based Goldstone
Infratech Limited’s zero emission
electric bus has officially started
running under Himachal Pradesh
Transport Corporation. The 25+1 seater
Goldstone eBuzz K7 was flagged off
by G S Bali, Minister of Transport,
Himachal Pradesh Government at Kullu
and will ply between Kullu-Manali-
Rohtang Pass. This bus from Goldstone
Infratech has the distinction of
successfully completing trials at a steep
gradient and over 13,000 feet altitude
for the first time in the country.
The bus which has been Made in
India by Goldstone Infratech Ltd. has
been certified by Automotive Research
Association of India (ARAI), after
extensive testing at part level and vehicle
level at various testing facilities.
Goldstone’s electric buses with front
and rear air suspension offer comfortable
rides to the commuters. These electric
buses are manufactured in tie-up with
BYD Auto Industry Co Ltd, the Chinese
electric vehicle manufacturer. Each bus
can run over 200 kms in a single charge
and can be recharged in less than 4 hours
due to its fast charging technology.
These buses use lithium iron phosphate
battery which ensure longer lifetime,
better power density and is safe due to
chemical and thermal stability.
Karnataka announces e-vehicle policy
The state Cabinet has cleared Karnataka
Electric Vehicle & Energy Storage
Policy 2017 with a clear plan to make
Bengaluru the electric vehicle capital
of India. The policy was formulated
by the Major and Medium Industries
Department after consulting the
stakeholders, including vehicle
manufacturing industries.
The key objectives of the policy are
to maintain the lead share of Karnataka
as a preferred destination for attracting
investments in manufacture of electric
vehicle. With this, the governmnet
aims to attract investments of Rs
31,000 crore and create 55,000 jobs.
RV Deshpande, Minister for Large and
Anand Swaroop, Chief Operating
Officer, Goldstone Infratech Ltd said,

India’s first company to run its ARAI
certified electric buses on Indian roads.
We are committed to offer quality
products to the country. We are sure
that these electric buses which have
started serving the passengers between
Kullu-Manali-Rohtang pass at such a

every state transport undertaking. This
will surely augment faster adoption of
much needed electric public transport
system in the country and further support
the cause of environment protection.”
Earlier in August this year, the
12-meter low floor AC electric bus from
Goldstone-BYD successfully completed
the trials with Chandigarh Transport
Undertaking. In addition to this,
Goldstone-BYD conducted successful
trials of its electric buses in the Delhi,
Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Rajkot.
Medium Industries and Infrastructure
Development, said, “The policy is
the result of the combined effort of
the government and key industry
players through roundtables organised
by Carnegie India and a series of
workshops held during the last four to
five months.”
Amendments will be made to
building by-laws for providing
mandatory charging infrastructure in all
high-rise buildings. A special purpose
vehicle (SPV) will be created to set up
charging centres across the Bengaluru
city. ‘Karnataka Electric Mobility
Research & Innovation Centre’ will be
set up to extend the necessary support.

Ford’s reach within India), and
global emerging markets (improving

Teams from both companies will
collaborate and work together for a
period of up to three years.
Force Motors has developed a range
of Gurkha with differing capabilities
so that customers can pick and choose
based on their requirements.
Gurkha Xplorer is the 4WD version
and will be powered by the new BS4
compliant 85hp FM 2.6 CR engine
with a flat peak torque of 230Nm from
1400 to 2400 rpm. It is mated with the
new G-28 5-speed all-synchromesh
gearbox with cable shift for effortless
gear shifting. The independent front
suspension with coil spring on struts
combined with multi-link with pan hard
rod and coil springs in the rear works
brilliantly well for mild / moderate off-
roading and offers excellent handling
and ride comfort on both tarmac as well
as in off-road conditions.
Gurkha Xpedition is configured
with the 5-door hard top body (D+8
seats) and rear wheel drive. It is also
powered by the 86hp/230 Nm FM 2.6
CR engine for regular everyday use
on both tarmac roads as well as rough
rural roads.

Borgward to enter
German market

Borgward plans to enter the

units of the Borgward BX7 TS

is expanding its production capacities
in China and further developing its
electronics plant in Shanghai. A new
building will be added to the existing
site, with building work started in
September 2017. The start of series

This will be followed by a fundamental
restructuring of the existing plant.
The Shanghai site will therefore be
gradually expanded to become the
largest electronics plant in the global

make non-toxic batteries

ccording to a
study recently
published in the
journal Science
and Technology of
Advanced Materials, researchers
have identified new solid

realize unprecedented targets for e-machine
efficiency. The eAxles will be paired with
a custom-designed fuel cell system – also

blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in human

This is also true
to automotive
manufacturing
activities, which are highly energy
intensive. Energy usage have significant
influence on cost of manufacturing, at the
same time total greenhouse gas (GHG)
emission is directly proportional to the
energy usage. Thus, energy management
is very important in automotive sector.
“Energy management is a continuous
process that develops overtime. By taking
right approach to energy management, it is
possible to make considerable savings in
carbon emission and manufacturing costs.
Successful energy management is only a
combination of an effective strategy and
right practical interventions. Success can be
ensured by making energy management an
integral part of running the organisation,”
feels Arvind Bodhankar, Head - HSE &
Sustainability, Tata Motors Ltd (TML).
Energy usage is considered as ‘cost of
doing business’ and companies are aware
of the waste and the associated costs. In
automobile plants, fuel is used for steam
applications, curing ovens of painting lines,
heat treatment and casting operations.
Majority of the energy is consumed in
the form of electricity, which is used
throughout the facility for compressed air,
metal forming, lighting, air conditioning,
painting, material handling, welding,
robotic arms, machining etc.
“Energy costs are rising rapidly. In
order to remain competitive resources
must be used efficiently. Monitoring,
measuring and managing energy use is
the key to better production efficiency and
sustainability. Energy recovery is also fast
becoming a central component of energy
efficiency across the automotive sector.
The innovation that is generating a lot of
savings in highly energy intensive sectors
such as automotive is the capture, storage
and reuse of excess energy,” opines Dr
Shrikar Dole, Founder & CEO, SDG

Rapid industrialisation and advanced
technological changes have put Indian
economy on fast growth. But such
developments pose, unprecedented
challenges to human society in term of
climatic and environmental degradation.
Therefore, the industry and the government
will have to take steps to deal with
environmental threats and explore ways
to address these issues, thus creating a
sustainable environmental future for all.
Dr Dole says, “Using energy

becoming more and more focused on

This is driving auto makers to focus
on energy management to achieve
their sustainability goals. Dr Sunita
Purushottam, Head of Consulting,
Treeni Sustainability Solutions, explains,
“Energy management is one of the most
important factor for the companies as it
results in the reduction of operating cost,
reduces carbon footprint and other air
emissions due to reduced fuel consumption
in the manufacturing process. Energy and
carbon emissions are considered as KPIs
for automotive industry.”
Automotive manufacturing has three
major areas of focus for improving energy
efficiency - manufacturing process,
products and supply chain. “The energy
conservation strategy of automotive firm
needs to cover these three areas to have
holistic approach for reduction in energy
consumption,” points out Dr Purushottam.

enables organisations to establish the
systems and processes necessary to
improve energy performance, including
energy efficiency, use and consumption.
According to Vijay Kalra, Chief of
Manufacturing – Automotive Division,
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M),
some of the key driving factors to have
effective energy management strategy are:

for each automobile industry to be

of the major contributors in overall

prime source for any automobile
manufacturing, and hence ensuring
energy availability around the clock
is very essential. Considering the
current deficit in demand and available
energy, energy management plays

• To reduce carbon emission: Entire
world is facing burning issue of
climate change and global warming
and, therefore, reducing energy
consumption through effective energy
management is important to optimise
the carbon emission (emitted due to
use of energy).

Auto makers are devising energy policy
which states their commitment to achieve
energy performance improvement and
provides framework for setting objective
& targets. Take the example of Mahindra
& Mahindra which follows Plan-Do-
Check-Act (PDCA) continual improvement
framework and has incorporated energy
management into everyday organisational
practices.
‘Plan’ involves conducting the energy
review and establishing the baseline, energy
performance indicators (EnPIs), objectives,
targets and action plans necessary to deliver
results. ‘Do’ means implementing the
energy management action plans including
various energy efficiency improvement
projects. While doing so, the company
ensures competency enhancement,
adequate training and creating awareness
among all internal stakeholder. M&M
has also incorporated energy efficiency
in procurement and design. ‘Check’
means monitoring and measuring energy
consumption and determining energy
performance against the energy policy &
objectives and reporting the results. ‘Act’
involves taking actions to continually
improve energy performance and the
energy management systems.

industry is the shift towards renewable
energy for manufacturing processes.
For example, Tata Motors, one of

energy contribution to 16.34% in 2016-17
from 8.44% in 2015-16.

renewable power, auto companies are
focusing on the most cost-effective
markets and signing long-term third-
party PPAs with energy providers to
provide business certainty. A PPA allows
a company to invest with no upfront
capital investment and establishes a
fixed price per Kw hour over a long-
term period. Tamil Nadu, where 40% of
supply is provided by wind energy, PPAs
are common among auto manufacturers.
Another option is to set up captive solar
and wind generation to support a factory.
Take the example of Maruti Suzuki, India’s
leading car maker, which was able to offset
1,014 tonne of CO2 by setting up 1 MW
solar power plant at Manesar facility.

hen it comes
to putting new

worldwide. The country has addressed
auto industry’s key issues such as shared
mobility, autonomous driving, digitisation,
e-mobility and, above all, both the
regulatory framework and the infrastructure
that enable such innovations, according to
the second Automotive Disruption Radar
(ADR), in which Roland Berger regularly
investigates the automotive industry’s
transition to a forward-thinking mobility
service provider. As part of ADR, around
11,000 consumers were surveyed in eleven
countries: China, Germany, France, the
UK, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands,
Singapore, South Korea and the US.
While the Netherlands has kept its top
position in the rankings, China moved to
second place - the only major automotive
market represented in the top 3. Singapore
follows at number three position. Other
major automotive markets, such as
Germany, France, Japan or the US, are
ranked in the middle or at the bottom.
Major Western automotive markets will
need to speed up implementation of
existing strategies and technologies in
order to minimise the risk of China taking
the lead in autonomous driving.
Compared to the first ADR, the
most obvious changes this time around
affect customer interest, technology and
regulation. In all three categories, Asian
countries – namely China, Singapore
and South Korea – are leading the way.
Singapore, for example, has lowered

“The future belongs to autonomous
driving - first and foremost in Asia. While
countries like Singapore are stepping on
the gas in the area of legislation, traditional
automotive markets such as Germany
are right now more preoccupied with
damage limitation in the wake of the
diesel scandal,” says Marcus Berret, head
of Roland Berger's global Automotive
Competence Center. ADR nevertheless
shows that drivers themselves are very
open to change: 45% of respondents
worldwide expressed an interest in
autonomous driving.
Open tO e-vehicles, but they

Drivers are clearly also open to new
developments in e-mobility. Fully 35%
of respondents worldwide can imagine
buying an electric car as their next vehicle.
Here again, Asia is out in front, with half
of Asian respondents saying they would
willingly buy an electric car. For example,
65% customers in India would be happy
to ‘go electric’ when buying their next
car, says ADR.
In individual countries, this figure
actually rises as high as two thirds –
compared to a figure of only 30% in
Western Europe and a mere 15% of
survey participants in the US. “These
varying preferences are also reflected in
the sales figures. The number of plug-in
hybrids and electric cars sold in Asia in
the first half of 2017 was almost twice as
high as in Western Europe and two-and-
a-half times as high as in the US,” notes
Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Partner at
Roland Berger India.
There is, however, one point on
which consumers in all countries agree:
Electric cars are still too expensive. The
second most powerful argument against
buying an electric car is the poor charging
infrastructure. Once again, the only Western
European country that leads the way is the
Netherlands. “Although the sales figures
for e-vehicles and plug-in hybrids have
lately declined due to reduced subsidies,
the country boasts an outstanding charging
infrastructure. And that lays the foundation
for a further increase in sales in the future,”
explains Aulbur.
RegulatORy fRamewORk: a
bOOst tO autOnOmOus dRiving
China, too, occupies a leading position
in e-mobility and car sharing. That is
the reason why the country occupies
second place in the overall ranking -
with considerable development potential
still in reserve. On top of this, Wolfgang
Bernhart, Partner, Roland Berger, predicts
that following on from e-mobility, China
has every chance of becoming a leading
market for autonomous driving, too.
One essential driver of the development
of autonomous driving is the legal and
regulatory framework in place in individual
countries. “On this score, China is in the
fast lane, with plans to approve autonomous
car models and new test circuits,” adds the
automotive expert.

We are predominately in engineering
software products & IT solutions. We
were established close to 20 years ago, and
now employ around 19,000 employees.
We are headquartered in Bangalore and
have technology innovation centers
located in Bangalore and Coimbatore. In
addition, we have development centres
overseas mainly in Vietnam and Mexico.
About 75% of our business comes from
engineering and IT solutions account

How are smart manufacturing and
Industry 4.0 shaping up in India?
How is Bosch driving this trend?
Bosch has a two-pronged strategy – one is
lead user and other is lead provider. Lead
provider means that there are number
of companies within Bosch Group that
provide bricks (products & solutions) that
are used to build smart manufacturing
businesses. Bosch is also an early adopter
of innovative technologies within its
own manufacturing facilities globally –
numbered at 270 production plants – thus
leading the Industry 4.0 revolution within
its group.
In India, Bosch has 18 manufacturing
units. In next three years, we aim to make
all our Bosch plants in the country Industry
4.0 compliant. Experience gained through
the adoption of new technologies within
our own manufacturing facilities helps
us understand the need of our customers
better and offer them appropriate solutions.

How is RBEI, Bangalore, helping
Indian companies to gear up for next
industrial revolution (ie, Industry 4.0)?
Our strategy is very simple. We develop
client-focused products, which are
basically software solutions. When you
talk about Industry 4.0, we are talking
about the industrial Internet of Things (ie,
sensors, software and solutions). These
are the backbone of any smart factory.
We are developing these technologies &
applications and deploy them at customers’
manufacturing sites.
We are witnessing very good traction.
Right now we are working with couple of
automotive majors who are gaining from
RBEI know-how and solutions. We cater
to both greenfield as well as brownfield
projects. For existing facilities (brownfield),
we provide new sensors and other requisite
solutions to support seamless integration
for the customer. We are seeing growth
in demand from greenfield as well as
brownfield projects.
Is it easy to incorporate Industry 4.0
solutions in greenfield projects than
brownfield?
There is no straightforward answer to this.
It depends on where you (customer) are and
what you want to achieve. The customer’s
preparedness is also a key factor to
determine the successful implementations
of smart solutions. If they are prepared
(mentally, culturally and technologically),
then they can enjoy the complete benefits
of going digital.
Smart technologies are a cost-effective
proposition for customers irrespective of
the project type (greenfield or brownfield).
Our experience says that upfront cost of
implementing Industry 4.0 solutions is not
huge and customer can expect return on
investments (ROIs) in less than two years.
What are the main challenges
before companies when it comes to
implementing Industry 4.0 solutions?
First, and probably the only challenge,
is the mindset of the customer. As you
know there are multiple stakeholders
in manufacturing industries – such as
workmen and shopfloor supervisors, plant
management and CXO - and each one of
them have different views on Industry 4.0.
It is very important that all of them are in
sync when it comes to implementation of
smart solutions. If this happens then it is
just a matter of time, training and picking
up the right vendor.
With regard to auto industry,
are OEMs (& their suppliers)
increasingly relying on smart
technologies?
There are three mega trends currently
underway in the automotive industry -
connected, automation and electrification
– as far as product (vehicle) development
is concerned. Connected vehicles, which
are a reality today, allow the user to share
internet access with other devices, both
inside as well as outside the vehicle.
In addition, factories, manufacturing
these cars, are also becoming smarter.
This is an interesting area of development.
Bosch, which is the world’s largest
supplier of auto components, uses smart
technologies at its factories across the
world to reduce costs and improve
efficiency. For example, it uses RFID for
intra-plant logistics. RFID based asset
tracking improves production planning
and reduces downtime on the shop floor.
Asset inventory management, coupled
with RFID technology, provides increased
accountability and cost-efficiency at the
enterprise level.
How important is cyber security in
an era of Industry 4.0?
This is an interesting question. Increased
connectivity of smart machinery is a
hallmark of Industry 4.0, heralding a new
age of connected and smart manufacturing.
With technological advancement,
industries are facing a new operational
risk of cyber attack. This is a real threat
and measures need to be taken to mitigate
this risk. Cyber security strategies should
be part of organisational strategy from
the start and it should be able to ward off
any malware or other security challenges.

secure from any cyber attack. We also
keep on updating these systems in line
with evolving technological trends and

Globally, Bosch Group is currently
engaged with all the top auto makers to
develop electric power train and system
technologies. We see the same push towards
electrification of vehicles in India and we
are ready with technologies to support
auto manufacturers in India to make the
transition from internal combustion engine
to electrification. Bosch is supporting not
only four-wheeler manufacturers, but also
three- and two-wheeler makers.
At present, electrification is in a
nascent stage in the country; however,
we are seeing that the industry and the
government are taking steps to make
this transition a reality. How soon it
will happen, nobody can give accurate
answers. However, Bosch is already
equipped to support car makers in their
journey towards electrification with its
globally-tested technologies & services.
What are your growth plans for

RBEI sees better growth ahead of us.
More importantly, we are witnessing
some technological disruptions that are
coming up. For example, with an increase
in automation, more developments will
take place on the software front. This will
open up more growth opportunities for us.

All core manufacturing industries are
users of our solutions, and hence offer
huge business opportunities for us. The
automotive sector is a big market for
Bosch in India and will continue to be so
as a result of various new developments

Will banning old vehicles
solve pollution issue?
While banning vehicles, which are more than 15 years old, is a noble idea,
feasibility and scale of impact on pollution reduction is not known. It will
also be a humungous task.
A
t the recently concluded
annual convention of Society
of Indian Automobile
Manufacturers (SIAM), the
apex association of auto
makers in the country, Vinod K Dasari,
CEO & MD, Ashok Leyland (who was
also the President of SIAM at that time),
reportedly suggested a ban on all vehicles,
which are more than 15 years old across
the country, in a bid to reduce pollution.
“Auto industry is doing a lot of work
to reduce pollution. We are working
to move to BS-VI emission norms. In
order to reduce pollution, we request the
government to ban vehicles which are 15
years old,” he said to one of the leading
dailies.
Banning of old vehicles has been
debated in public, especially after the
National Green Tribunal (NGT) passed a
resolution in April 2015 to ban all petrol
and diesel vehicles that were more than

15 years old from plying on the roads in
Delhi and NCR. This led to a huge uproar.
Following this, NGT passed another
order in 2016 directing the authorities to
deregister diesel vehicles more than 10
years old with immediate effect. According
to the tribunal, one diesel vehicle causes
pollution equal to 24 petrol vehicles and
40 CNG vehicles.
This phenomenon is not restricted to
India, but globally there is trend towards
banning old diesel vehicle. Paris (France)
currently prohibits vehicles built prior
to 2001 from being driven in the city on
workdays. Similarly, the Netherlands
has 13 ‘environmental zones’, in which
commercial vehicles built prior to 2001
are banned.
Banning equals pollution
control?
The automotive sector has always been
ahead in terms of conforming to the
new pollution norms set. The industry
is now looking at Bharat Stage (BS) VI
implementation. In diesel cars, the jump
to BS VI norms (from BS IV) will result
in reduction of nitrogen oxide emission
by 68% and particulate matter by 82%.
Similarly, in heavy-duty vehicles like
trucks, the shift to BS VI norms would
result in reduction of nitrogen oxide
emissions by 87% and particulate matter
by 67%.
With reports that SIAM has called for
a ban on 15-year-old vehicles (petrol &
diesel), the topic has gathered steam again.
But the question is: Will banning of old
vehicles lead to reduction in pollution? “We
have nearly 30-35 million vehicles (across
all vehicle categories) that are over 15 years
old, banning these will result in reduction
of pollution to some extent. Efficiency of
these vehicles is low, maintenance is also
not the best. Many of these vehicles have
reached their end of life and are no longer

in India, the recalling or banning exercise
will be enormous. “It is a humongous
exercise no doubt, and especially in a
country where the population of vehicles
is nearly 250 million currently, of which
30-35 million are 15 years old. The
number of 15-year-old vehicles is likely
to grow multi-fold and reach levels of 75
million in the next five years and over
100 million in ten years’ time. This is
not a surprise as India has added nearly
200 million vehicles in the last 15 years,”
says Rajashree.
The challenges are more likely to be in
implementation and how the old and the
ELVs (end of life vehicles) are dealt with.

She elaborates, “An initiative such
as this will have to be supported with
appropriate policies and infrastructure for
disposal of vehicles. Currently in India,
the management and disposal of ELVs are
essentially in the domain of the informal
and unregulated sector, unlike several other
countries that are in an advanced stage of
automobile recycling where 85-95% of the
vehicle is recovered. Countries are bringing
in policies, regulations to this affect.”
Automobile recycling can be used
extensively to help reduce waste, aid in
the reuse of components and recycling
of raw materials. End-of-life vehicles
contain many materials and parts that can
be refurbished and reused. Over 70% of an
automobile by weight consists of metals
like steel, aluminium, copper, lead, etc
which are relatively easily recovered.
“With appropriate technologies and
infrastructure, substantial quantity of
rubber and plastics can also be recycled,
components recovered and sold. We need
to develop infrastructure which can deal
with the dismantling of such vehicles and
bring these into the mainstream. Not to
mention the revenue loss to the exchequer
as these are all in the informal sector,”
points out Rajashree.
Will incentive Work?
According to a report in The Economic
Times in February this year, the Committee
of Secretaries (CoS) gave an in-principle
approval to the Roads Transport and
Highways Ministry’s proposal to provide
a package of incentives to remove old and
polluting commercial vehicles (such as
trucks & buses), which are older than 15
years, from the roads. The proposed policy,
which is only limited to CVs at present, is
now awaiting the Union Cabinet’s approval
for implementation.
According to the government officials,
the policy has the potential to reduce
vehicular emission by 25% and save oil
consumption by 3.2 billion litres a year.

the positive effect on the environment
will be limited.
So should the government or the
industry (automakers) offer some incentives
to all old vehicles? Giving an incentive
would be like our erstwhile subsidies
which will come back to haunt us, opines
Rajashree.
According to her, the best incentive for
an owner is the right value for his vehicle.
Today, owners do sell their vehicles when
they are no longer road worthy to scrap
dealers located in the automobile scrap
yards in the city or to local mechanics,
who dismantle the vehicle, recover some
components and sheet metal. However,
this is not the best and most efficient
process. There are issues related to the
vehicle assessment value, deregistration
of the vehicle that is not done and the full
value of the vehicle is not recovered in the
dismantling process.
Rajashree observes, “There is need
for the government to draw up regulations
for disposal of vehicles, enabling the
development of an organised ecosystem
which will encourage owners to sell their
vehicles to organised dismantling units,
provide for the infrastructure for recycling
of these vehicles and build landfills for
disposal of non-recyclable wastes.”
Creating awareness and educating
customers on the benefits of such a
system will be the starting point. “Various
industry stakeholders such as automobile
OEMs, auto component firms, motor
insurance firms, financing firms need
to come together and work with various

plying roads are successful, it will lead
to rise in sale of new vehicles having
latest technology. This will not only
curtail pollution, but also improve the
economy that is witnessing slowdown
due to the double whammy of demo–

ACMA’s study conducted by McKinsey
& Co themed ‘Future of E-mobilty’ was
released by the Chief Guest, Vishvajit
Sahay along with other luminaries. The
study reveals that globally, majority of
experts believe that the auto industry
will be disrupted with trends like shared
mobility, autonomous driving, connectivity
and electrification in our future vehicles.
These trends will have a major impact on
the value chain, resulting in market shift
and revenue pools. The role of OEMs
and suppliers will fade by 2030, leading
to an emergence of new players, gaining
a significant share of revenues and profits
of the automotive industry. The driving
force towards this change in mobility
will be collaboration and innovation with
auto suppliers.

Speaking on the occasion, Vishvajit
Sahay said, “The auto industry plays
an important role in contributing to the
country’s GDP where it contributes 7.1%
and out of this auto component contributes
2.1% upwards. The Indian automotive
industry is poised to change now. We need
to view this change as an opening of new
opportunities. For this the industry needs
to be not only technology-ready, but also
capacity-ready. To be able to succeed in
doing so we need to acquire & train the
workforce while creating new avenues for
skill development as well. The government
expects the automobile industry to act
as the prime contributor to the Make in
India movement and is ready to support
the industry in every possible manner.”
Expressing optimism on the front of
e-mobility, Rattan Kapur stated, “We at
ACMA believe that while the future is
electric, however the logical progression
would be to move from IC-engines to
hybrids and then to fully-battery based
vehicles. This will provide the local
industry with the opportunity to develop
and best acquire technologies for the
future generation of vehicles. A long-

term stable technology-agnostic roadmap
for the automotive industry driven by a
sound regulatory framework is therefore
the need of the hour so that the industry
can invest for sustainable growth and
development, in line with the aspirations

Kapur added, “There is a fundamental
need to preserve the environment for our
future generations and are committed to it.
For the auto component industry this may
imply drastic changes for many individual
players. Time has come for each of us in
the industry to accept this new business
environment and gear ourselves to cater
to the new demands of the future.”

stand facing a massive technological
transformation, which is coming our way.
This leap towards e-mobility is bound to
happen sooner or later, the correct way to
do it would be a gradual transition. Policy

of the nation and its customers. These
new technologies already exist and are
reasonably mature and can be implemented
in a matter of few years but the industry
needs clarity so that both OEMs and auto
component manufacturers could plan for
the change accordingly.”
In his keynote address, R C Bhargava,
Chairman, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd,
emphasised, “As the vehicle population is
increasing, the need to import the crude oil
is also increasing. Crude oil being a non-
renewable resource is limited in nature,
thereby, building a need to shift to a more
sustainable and environment friendly
alternative. It is in our government’s long
term interest to accept electric mobility as
an alternate means of transport and we
as an industry need to acknowledge the
challenge to make it happen.”
However, Bhargava cautioned that there
were a few challenges, which need to be
addressed before the industry embarks
on the journey of electric mobility for
India. Firstly, battery is the main element
of electric vehicles and it is the low cost
of battery that will determine the sales
of the vehicle and secondly, the charging
infrastructure should be available for the
convenience of using the vehicle. “The
