Depth of slab
Since the conference hall slab is supported only on two parallel sides, the slab acts as one-way
slab. And the depth is calculated accordingly:
 a = 28 (Interior Span) [EBCS - 2,1995 Table 5.1]

LM 5.63 Interior 28 170.911
Table x.y: Depth of slab from deflection
The maximum effective depth from table x.y is 170.911 mm. therefore the overall depth would be:
Cover = 15 mm [EBCS - 2,1995 Table 7.2]

D = 170.911 + 15 + 12 / 2 = 191.911 mm
Take D= 200 mm
The revised effective depth would be:
d = 200 − 15 − 12 / 2 = 179 mm

Therefore, the shear capacity of the slab per one-meter-wide strip is:

v c = 0.25 *1.03 *1.083 *1.421 *1000 *179 *10 -3 = 70.934 KN

The maximum design shear force on the slab is 49.61 KN (from the shear force diagram). The
design shear force is less than the slab shear capacity. Therefore, the slab depth provided is
adequate.
