September Site Visit

For my first site visit I went to the library at Howard County Community College. When

I was at the library I talked with the librarians and general helpers that sit at the front desk. When

I arrived I initially tried to access the online databases but I was unable to log on to the

computers. So that is when I enlisted the help of the librarian. I was told that only students were

allowed to use the computers, but I could bring my own computer and access the online

information. Because I did not have my laptop with me at the time I took the rest of my time to

explore the library and look at all of the information they had in their physical book section. I

found this very interesting because it was not all of the normal books you would find in public

library. They were more scholarly and subject based rather than a lot of fictional books for

pleasure. Since the the topic I am looking into, social media effects, is based on newer

information I was unable to find a book that had to do with my topic. Even Though I did not gain

any physical information on my topic I was able to experience what it is like to be in a college

environment. This was very cool because it is not something that a lot of high schoolers will get

to experience before they go off to college. You are not taught in school how to conduct

yourself in more professional settings like I was in, so I still feel like I gained a lot of knowledge

on social skills in professional settings. Another skill I was able to practice is asking for help

from a stranger. I don’t generally like to ask people for help if I don’t know them, but being in

the library forced me to do this.
