In Action
What is ISM?

• Independent Study Mentorship (ISM) Project Based Research is a course designed for
students to mentor an adult professional in a career of their choice.

• Requirements:
• Complete an in-depth study in an area of interest
• Document at least 3 hours of mentorship each week
• Complete an online ISM portfolio (Weebly Website)
• Develop a Mid-Term Presentation as well as a final product and presentation
• Complete all daily classwork assignments
Project Topic

• Topic: Children’s Ministry Event Planning


• Diving behind the scenes into what goes into
planning an event; from coming up with the idea,
to budgeting and setup.
• To learn about the behind the scenes aspect of
how these events I have always loved are put on.

Coming Up With Ideas

• Make SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable,


Relevant, Time-Based) and account for complications
• Look at what has worked in the past
• Determine the why and the goal and base the event on that
• Plan WAY in advance -->

• Opportunities for parents to volunteer while kids explore
• Exposure to older students and adults

Fundraisers

• Don’t be blinded by or lose sight of the big picture

Current Event- Night to Shine
• Tim Tebow created this event because he “wanted to do
something to honor them, to let them feel the love of God”
(Suchyta).
• The event is “hosted by more than 600 churches and staffed
by 200,000 volunteers, welcoming about 100,000 special
needs guests” (Suchyta).
• Sensory Room and Respite Room
• An event that is put on by the church annually to bring people
into the church and help them to feel the love of God

Conclusion

• From this experience I have learned more about Children’s Ministry and how I can
be involved in it when I get older.
• For my product I have created a collection of the process of event planning my
mentor has shown me so that it can be replicated and used for other events as well
as showcasing this event.
• From my research I have developed a greater understanding for what goes into
planning an event.
