UNIT PLAN

Guitar

UNIT GOALS
1. Students will be able to play a two-octave G major scale using the correct fingers and the
rhythm provided.
2. Students will be able to explain about how sharps affect pitches, how to make notes sharp
on the guitar, and how many sharps are in the key of G.

MATERIALS
1. Major Scale Studies and Exercises​ by Matt Mrosko

PRE-TEST
1. Students are instructed to individually perform their G Major scale.
2. Students are assessed using the pre-test rubric.

LESSON 1
1. Goals
a. Students will be able to explain how a sharp affects a pitch.
b. Students will be able to demonstrate how to make a pitch sharp on their
instrument.
c. Students will begin learning their two-octave G major scale
2. Experiences
a. Introduce Sharps
i. What sharps look like
ii. What sharps do
iii. How to make notes sharp on the guitar
b. Scale Walk Through
i. Walk through both octaves of the scale together
ii. Model the correct fingerings
c. Practice Scale
i. 5 minutes of individual practice time
d. Individual Performances
i. Each student will perform their G major scale using the rhythm provided.
3. Assessment
a. Students are assessed using formative assessment during their individual
performances.
4. Future Modifications
a. Review finger positions
b. Allow more one-on-one time with Student 3 to review how scales work.

LESSON 2
1. Goals
a. Students will be able to play measures 1-10 of their G Major scale exercises.
b. Students will be able to play the first set of their G Major scale studies.
c. Students will be able to demonstrate the use of the correct fingers for the correct
frets.
2. Experiences
a. Review sharps
i. Have students explain how sharps work
b. Review Finger Positions
i. Finger numbers correlate with fret numbers when playing in the first
position
ii. First fret is always played with first finger, second fret with second finger,
etc.
c. G Major Scale Exercises
i. Play m. 1-10
1. Isolate the measures with the sharps (esp. on the 6th string)
d. G Major Scale Studies
i. Play the first set
e. Individual Practice Time
i. 5 minutes of individual practice time
ii. One-on-one time with Student 3
f. Individual Performances
i. Each student will perform their G major scale using the rhythm provided.
3. Assessment
a. Students are assessed using formative assessment during their individual
performances.
4. Future Modifications
a. Say note names with fingers
b. Break the scale down octave by octave both ascending and descending
c. Explaining transition from open G string to 4th finger F# when descending
LESSON 3
1. Goals
a. Students will be able to perform their two-octave G Major scale using the correct
fingers, rhythm, and pitches.
b. Students will be able to explain how many sharps are in G Major’s key signature.
c. Students will be able to demonstrate how to raise the pitch of a note on the guitar.
2. Experiences
a. Review sharps and how to raise a note’s pitch
b. G Major Scale Exercises
i. Run m. 1-10
c. G Major Scale Study
i. Run the first set
d. Individual Practice Time
i. 5 minute to practce
ii. Address individual needs
e. Individual Performances
i. Each student will perform their G Major scale with the specified rhythm
3. Assessment
a. Students are assessed using formative assessment during their individual
performances.
4. Future Modifications
a. Pair the students up and have them critique each other

POST-TEST
1. Students are instructed to individually perform their G Major scale.
2. Students are assessed using the post-test rubric.
