completion of the civil works and the portion of the area cleared for the
installation works.
11.2 Setting Out of Works
Generally prior to commencement of the delivery of the ducts & associated
accessories and duct support systems, the setting out of the installation shall be
conducted to determine the location of dampers, and fittings. Setting out to determine
the position of the duct supports shall be included.

Air Ducting 6/18 Revision : 00

The setting out of the works shall be on the basis of an "approved for construction"
installation drawings. And the setting out shall be from a common reference point to
be provided at the site. The common reference point shall also be included in the
"approved for construction" installation drawings, with all setting out dimensions
relative to the common reference point.
Any discrepancies between the common reference point on the "approved for
construction" installation drawings and the actual site provisions shall be notified to
the Project Manager and an NCR shall be raised. Works will not start till the
discrepancies are resolved.
Locations and identify the duct routes, the positions of the duct mounted equipment
and the locations of the duct support system, inclusive of hanger drilling locations.
11.2.1 Fabrication And Installation Of Steel Support Systems
 Duct supports shall be fabricated on site based on the "approved for
construction" installation drawings and duct detail drawings.
 The supports shall be fabricated.
 Prior to fixing supports, layout duct route and mark the locations of supports
on wall, underneath the slab properly. Determine the position of the duct
supports and mark the location.
 Determine the position of any temporary lifting points to be used and marked
out on the concrete. Depending on the size and weight of the pipe, make
temporary lifting supports, capable of lifting the full load to be installed.
Ensure to employ suitable size chain blocks.
11.2.2 Duct Installation Procedures
 A routinely check should be conducted to ensure shop drawings being issued
for fabrication on site are approved .
 All the materials to be used for the fabrication of the duct work should be
checked for their compliance with the standards and project specifications.
 Only approved materials should be procured and used for the fabrication of the
ductworks. The storage of the materials at the workshop prior to the
fabrication should be arranged to avoid any water marks and any other
mechanical damages to the G.I sheets.
 Visual check should be conducted prior fabrication of ducting.
 All the fabrication method the ductworks should be according to the standards
and specifications. The flanges and the jointing procedures should be as per
standard. All duct sections shall be flanged according to Specifications.
 Copies of approved shop drawings should be issued to workshop engineer. All
ducts should be properly tagged and identified.
 The project engineer along with the supervisor should check the site for the
completion of civil works and areas should be cleared prior ductworks
installation.
 Walls & slabs openings for ducts penetrating should be checked on site to
confirm builder's work drawings issued are as per approved.

Air Ducting 7/18 Revision : 00

 Upon delivery of ducts to site, the supervisor or site engineer should check the
quantity and quality of ducts indicated on the delivery order are as per the
approved shop drawings
 All fabricated ducts should be stored in the allocated, shaded or covered and
secured area on site.
 All the joints should be applied with approved duct sealant and the duct should
be cleaned with the clean cloth to avoid any dust particle on the surface of the
ducts.
 The duct support for the portion of the duct should be marked on the site prior
to the installation of the supports. The duct support location should be marked
on the site.
 When ducts are jointed with the flange connection the gasket should be
provided in between the flanges to avoid the leakage of the air from the duct.
Duct sealant will be applied to all the joints before insulation.
 The takeoff collar for the branch duct will be marked on the insulation and the
portion of the insulation is cut and the takeoff collar is fitted to the main duct
for the connection of the branch duct.
 The gaps that will connect the main duct with the branch duct are measured
and fabricated by duct manufacturer.
 Take off collars for the diffusers are mark and fix to the main ducts.
 As soon as the ductworks installation is finished, visually inspect first prior
conducting joint inspection with the consultants.
 On the approval of the inspection by the consultants, the place is cleared for
the other services and the false ceiling works to proceed with.
 The false ceiling coordinated layout drawing is followed for the location of the
diffusers on the false ceiling, the branch duct is terminated exactly above the
location of the diffusers.
 Along with the ceiling grid work the dropper neck for the diffusers were taken
and left on the false ceiling level.
 Clear the site for the other services.
11.2.3 Ducting And Fittings
 Prior installing ducting parallel to walls, floors, and ceilings, clear
obstructions, preserve headroom, and keep openings and passageways clear.
 Remove burrs or sharp edge when joining straight duct and fitting materials to
avoid injury.
 Remove scale and dirt, inside and outside, before assembly.
 Should structural features or other work prevent running of ducts or setting of
equipment at locations indicated, necessary minor deviations there from will
be permitted, as approved by the Engineer.
 Run ducting in chases or recesses in walls where provided, through openings
in floors, and in furred ceilings; otherwise, as exposed ducts.

Air Ducting 8/18 Revision : 00

 Provide transition fittings where change in duct size occurs. Abrupt or short
transition shall not be used unless otherwise indicated or in special cases.
 Make changes in direction only with manufactured fittings.
 Provide proper length bolts for each size flange on flanged connections. Bolts
with excessive length of exposed threads will not be permitted. A minimum of
three full threads is required to be exposed beyond the nut after tightening the
assembly.
 Prevent entry of foreign matters during handling, assembling, and installation
of ducts, dampers and fittings. Use either compressed air, wire brush or other
acceptable means to remove dirt, and other foreign matters from within
interior of ducting before final connections are made. Protect open ends of
ducting by capping, plugging, or by other acceptable methods.
 Provide flexible connections to equipment.
 Install class of ducting as indicated or where applicable.
 Do not run ducting touching any electrical cables, electric switchboards,
transformers, or electric motor starters.
11.2.4 Duct Joints And Connections
 Make joints as per Standard, local and international codes.
 Align and allow space for ducting accurately before installation. Do not use
flexible connections to correct misalignment.
 Support ducting near equipment to prevent weight of duct from compressing
or extending flexible connection from required installed setting.
 Install as recommended by the connection manufacturer.
 Assemble flexible section with fire-rated acceptable/approved materials. Equip
flanged assemblies with limit bolts to restrict maximum travel.
 Provide control units for duct connectors at equipment mounted on vibration
isolators, to limit travel.
 Locations: Locate joints and connections so ducting can be easily disconnected
for removal of equipment
 Flanges: Provide matching flange faces at each connection to equipment or
ducts.
 Install rubber gaskets of the required types.
11.2.5 Dampers And Access
 Volume control dampers: Install volume control dampers to each ducting
branch, equipment outlets and inlets for adjusting and balancing the volume of
air on areas served as indicated on approved shop drawings. Avoid installing
volume control dampers on the air outlet plenum to avoid noise.
 Provide access holes for air measuring devices such as pilot tube manometer/
anemometer at designated locations along ducting. Access holes will be
designated by the commissioning team. Access holes construction and
installation must be as per Standard, local and international codes.

Air Ducting 9/18 Revision : 00

 Properly seam, brace, stiffen, support and render ducts mechanically airtight.
 Adjust ducts to suit job conditions.
 Insulate duct using approved insulating materials adhesive.
 Should structural features or other work prevent running of ducts or setting of
equipment at locations indicated, necessary minor deviations there from will
be permitted, as approved by the Engineer.
 Anchor ducting subject to expansion or contraction in a manner permitting
such strains and stresses to be evenly distributed and alleviated by swing joints
or expansion loops.
 Provide proper flexible fire rated fiber duct connections to equipment.
 Ensure proper clearance between ducting and electric cable trays and
equipment.
 Insulate as soon as duct sections are completed.
 As for the next installation of duct sections, used the same procedure as above.
